I used this cassette to learn all the songs words and so learned the poems.40 years later when I read Banjo in my head its to the music these boys created. Best way to learn a poem ever.
An unappreciated Aussie gem, performed by an even more unappreciated Aussie act; I hear you, no one else might, but I do, and validate and appreciate your unheard agony.
A good point and you say the same for all of this album. It also applies to Lawson's works as done by the Bushwackers. So mmany songs that tell our great histtory.
Never been. But I met several. The wildfires when they were bad, I met Dani Bee. She asked for my small paintings to inspire them during that hard time. Months later I found a Seekers song: I am Australian. And I cried because in some tiny way I helped with the thing I do best . I am glad that your island home has given so much to the world.
I love this country. I was a migrant from the former Yugoslavia many years ago. I am grateful for the life l have here. Have always loved this song. God bless this beautiful land xx
This song is one of the best songs to describe the beaty of what Australia is all about, the hard work and dedication of the people that came to this beautiful country and made it what it is today, we the immigrants that fought of the Japanese imperialists to withhold them from taking this country (oh you dont hear that every day) and the thanks we get?..none!!, so people of Australia read up on historical events not just whst idiots want you to believe
I have witnessed the cultural experience of sharing a beer in a country pub, thousands of kilometers from nowhere, where a local gent in a big cowboy hat recited the Man from Snowy River to the entertainment of all of us. I decided right there and then, to learn Clancy of the Overflow by heart, and Mulga Bills Bicycle, so that if ever I was of the opportunity as a foreign Canuck, I would be able to rattle off some of Banjo Patterson as I love his poems so much. After two years in the Philippines adopting a child, I long to return home there, and can only tell the Australians how much I love the place, how beautiful it still is, and how fortunate we are to be able to liver there.
This song unexpectedly popped into my head the other day for no apparent reason, had the whole album back in the day, brilliant interpretations by a very talented band. Just read the band is still going strong, recording and touring.
I actually bought this on cassette (remember those), and was so moved I bought the LP album for my Uncle. He absolutely loved it! His favourite track, "The Man From Ironbark". I didn't need to ask my mother which was hers I already knew..."The Man From Snowy River". I love this album for a lot of reason's....& I'm thankfull Andrew Barton "Banjo" Patterson wrote these magnificent poems...
I got the álbum also... back in 1982 (or so)... and " the man from snowy river " ...is about 15 minutes long.. it is on my playlist for long car trips... I used to ski back-country in those days . ..
The Great John Wallis, Loved this album since my old man bought it in the 1980's and I'm only 34 and still know who this band was, and a great band at that, the only ones who thought good ol Banjo deserved to be immortalized in music, with there incredible modern country folk sound. shame back in 1980 this wasn't a huge and I mean Huge hit, It deserved to be. but will be one in my heart.
This poem is more pertinent today than ever. Most people are stuck behind computers in shoebox offices with unpleasant company and unpleasant news, and unhappy lives. Slaving and slaving and unable to escape their dreary lives. We have a big and beautiful continent that so many do not know.
So keen to get overseas, over & over ...I had a headmaster, not the principal, at my high school whose lament, bugbear was people not seeing our great country first, then travelling if they must. He took the odd geography class & could be an ogre, but he had a valid point.
Makes my heart ache and the tears flow, I,m not ashamed to say. My Grand parents /parents lived thru this era, not that far into the past as you might think..
"I am sitting in my dingy little office, where a stingy Ray of sunlight struggles feebly down between the houses tall, And the foetid air and gritty of the dusty, dirty city Through the open window floating, spreads its foulness over all". One of Banjos best lines ever.
I remember my Mum playing this when I was a kid about 40 years ago. Had forgotten about it until I was at my Mums on the weekend & she started playing it. Great song 👌
Love it. I always feel that I'm going back in time just listening to these words. It just seems evocative of the late 19th early 20th century Australia...
Every time something spills I usually say Clancy It actually brings a tear to my eye this song, "well I doubt He'd suit the office Clancy of the overflow" 😍
And they say there's nothing useful on the Internet! Thanks for posting this - it's got a family member in it and we didn't think there were any useful live recordings.
Brilliant and I wish that I had known about Wallis and Matilda when I was still living in Australia, but never heard of them, I mist so much due to my work in isolated places in PNG, But thank you for putting this on You Tube, I am married to a South African and have three children and we love listing to this band and all that they have produce, thank you.Mike
These guys are grossly under recognised - those albums were fantastic adaptations of great poetry - their arrangements enlivened the words beautifully. Wonderful. I just finished reading "Kings in Grass Castles" - the "Pioneers" track a great tribute to a remarkable generation of people, the likes of whom we'll never see again as indeed the poem says.
Thankfully a recording for all time, and for me the definitive version of the poetry. i bought Pioneers when it first came out. I still have it. Thank you guys.
My son was born in Albury and lives here in NZ with his wife and two little girls Tallulah and Mathilda-how proud an Irish/Australian is that boy of mine.Poppa Dan.
We need to help the people of the country that fight droughts as I read today another Aussie Family have to abandon their station outside Broken Hill. I like others live the soft life and whinge about the traffic and in the mean time our Country is going down the drain.
An absolute favourite for yonks. I thought this was Bullamakanka? but could be wrong. Wonderful anyway. Top poem too! We have some wonderful Australian poetry
Ultimate evidence that if the Whistle is in the same key as the song, you can peg any note in the scale and it fits :-) But, yes, and true Australian classic. Who remembers what was on the 'B' side of the 45..... Look up 'Going Solar"
this is a really pretty song, and i used to love it when i was 8 or 9.when did it come out?1980? 81? i remember hearing it on the radio all the time, and its great to hear it after so many years.
I'm sure I remember this song from my childhood... a cassette my parents bought me (probably from KMart)... but I am convinced the name of the band was 1927 or something like that (Obviously not Compulsory Hero 1927...) but the opening stanza of this song is spot on... Did these guys ever go by another name?
As a young kid I stayed with these people for a few weeks in about 1980...they had this album on high rotation , not saying I am a fan, but this song got drummed into my head big time cos I already knew a lot of Banjo Paterson stuff ...I stumbled across this today and it took me back1Were they from Canberra this band?

Absolutely. It plays in my mind and I'm pleased to have just found this.
New immigrant from China. I love Australia my new home country.
Welcome mate !
Good on you for making an effort to get to know the country's history, mate :)
I hope you are made to feel welcome.
Good onya China.
Welcome mate
An unappreciated Aussie gem, performed by an even more unappreciated Aussie act; I hear you, no one else might, but I do, and validate and appreciate your unheard agony.
I remember as a kid in the 80s hearing this song on ABC..it struck a chord with me then..It was 30 years after that initial time I heard it again..❤❤
It's a pity Banjo Paterson is not around to see this brilliant musical tribute to his work.
This song was a brilliant way to get kids to learn this magnificent poem, when they thought poetry was 'boring'.
Totally agree I learnt this poem in primary school years ago, so glad it's set to music, even more enjoyable
A good point and you say the same for all of this album. It also applies to Lawson's works as done by the Bushwackers. So mmany songs that tell our great histtory.
We should be proud to be Australian. This song sums up how many of us feel.GOD BLESS AUSTRALIA.
Australia???What was that?
Australia home of my heart
Never been. But I met several. The wildfires when they were bad, I met Dani Bee. She asked for my small paintings to inspire them during that hard time. I am getting old now and my plan is to watch as many Australian made things possible.
I Love my Country.. Red Dog sort of thing.
I have witnessed the cultural experience of sharing a beer in a country pub, thousands of kilometers from nowhere, where a local gent in a big cowboy hat recited the Man from Snowy River to the entertainment of all of us. Anything by Banjo Paterson is worth so much

Remember when you would learn these great poems at School.
My mum is 88 and despite dementia remembers this from her school days. A littlebut meaningful link remaining with her past.
Lawson, Kendall, Slessor, Wright....
Today it's more likely that students will be force-fed 'poetry' that trashes Australia & its history.....
Should be shown in all schools
then i wont be going to school no more ‼️‼️‼️🍛🍛🍛🍛 /hj
Brilliant, love your version 👏 keep up the great work
2019 and I'm still listening to this song....love it
Never stop listening-this is our culture, alive and well👍🏻
I got here in 2023.😂 listening to someone from England talking about immigration to Australia and so I thought of this song that I knew as a kid.

Forget it mate Oz is gone and is not coming back.
High quality performance. What words, what a tune, ansolutely inspiring. Pround to be an Aussie.

Had this on 45 as a kid. This hits me hard.
Same. Nostalgia is the pleasure of those that live to an older age.
DID IT HIT YOU HARDER THEN HOW HARD I STABBED THE KNIFE INTO MYSELF 🍛🍛🍛‼️‼️❕❕❕
Superb...must find some more of their music... Slim Dusty would be proud of them..

YK WHAT ELSE IS BRILLIANTLY DONE...MY LIFE 🍛‼️
surprised we've never produced music like this in Ireland.....
Probably a fair few Irish alongside the other immigrants from the isles who influenced Australian folk and poetry
An absolute favourite for yonks. I thought this was Bullamakanka? but could be wrong. Wonderful anyway. Top poem too! We have some wonderful Australian poetry
I read this to my sons tonight, and ended up singing it... Had to find out where it came from...
So good, well done.

This should be our National Anthem
That's what I said too!
Along with the man from snowy river
No, it is poetry, not National Anthem material.

Good as it gets
real good version, I heard this 30 years ago
@afepple1 I don't think Oz ever leaves the heart.. the smell of eucalyptus and bright sun are always just a memory away. Take care eh!
Beautiful indeed.
Singing of an Australia that shamefully, the powers that be would like to forget.
That won't be happening. He solidifies what it means to be Aussie..and country Aussie at that!
Australians at there best, shame it dosen't exist anymore
@@triggerdigger2107 Yes they can, the worthless lefty shit-stirrers are trying hard to do exactly that, poisoning everything with their toxic politics
