Like Pink Floyd, this work Quadrophenia should be listened to as a complete work. Musical themes reoccur and weave in and out throughout the work. It is a rock opera!
Truer words were never typed, we were stunned the first time we heard it when released.
@@vicprovost2561 Yes!
Yes, please do the whole album!!
Pure genius...
This album is incredible (especially Keith Moon on drums). This song is an overture, with pieces of each song. Please explore the album! The song that got your attention is 'Love, Reign O'er Me" and it's a vocal tour de force for Roger Daltrey.
Yup
Yes that one and 5:15.
I've been saying that, about learning the story about the album, since they first started playing songs off this album. Tommy also, which is the same quality of music, but this album is a coming-of-age anthem, where is Tommy is just plain disturbing.
@@jamesoconnor9027 zTommy was a very good and meaningful story during that era and into the next decade because there were several fanatic groups that had leaders that caused mass suicides and other crazy nonsense that relates indirectly. You might be from England where the story of the Mods and Rockers took place. It does not relate as well in the USA.
@@joelliebler5690 I agree. You can relate Mods and Rockers in the '60s and 70's to Greasers and Dupers
Greatest Rock Band Ever
Pete Townshend said in an interview "we tell Keith to do a drum solo and we write a song around it. The Live At Leeds My Generation Medley is 17 mins.of magic.
"The Punk and the Godfather" would make a cool next song. This is one of my favorite albums.
My favorite album of all time. Never get tired of listening to the whole album in one sitting.
Love your reactions! This track incorporates the four themes of the Quadrophenia album, which appear throughout the album. Each of the band members is associated with a theme. Every song on this album is fantastic, but it's best to listen to concept albums (and most albums from the 70s) in their entirety. Please, please, please play the title track of the concept masterpiece The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis with Peter Gabriel.
One of the greatest albums ever made and saved me in my teenage years of the 1980s. Actually, it saves me every time I listen to it 🙂. Taking it to the desert island with me. Nice review and take care 🙂
One of the greatest double albums, one of the greatest Concept Albums and just plain one of the Greatest Albums, period. All four musicians are at their best and the production is the envy of everybody, they have few peers. This album should be listened to in its entirety sometime to get the full story and to hear the awesome flow of the songs, one into another, stuff you usually think about with Pink Floyd. This album is pure goosebumps, we cried when we saw this live. Love Rain O'er Me, indeed, a freaking religious experience. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Great band
Great reaction. One of my 'desert island discs.'
Another workday, another killer song choice - and another morning at my desk with my headphones on and @AirplayBeats making my day. Y'all are awesome as always - peace and love from north of the border ☮
Have a Great Day my friend!!!
my beautiful family played this masterpiece as they brought my beautiful brothers coffin into the church, and every time i hear it,i just start crying but nothing wi stop me playing it ,thanks mr townshend and the who for making a fitting tribute too my so wonderful, and beautiful brothers last song
This piece serves as what would normally be the opening overture to a musical or opera - an instrumental number that introduces the main musical themes of the entire work. It's placement as the 3rd piece on the album is unorthodox, as they choose to open with a soundscape of recorded sounds to aurally set the location and then "The Real Me", to introduce Jimmy, the protagonist. The word "Quadrophenia" is a play on schizophrenia, but with 4 personalities*.
The piece presents the 4 musical themes which each represent one of the 4 sides of Jimmy's personality, and which also represents the personalities of one of the members of The Who.
It's all really brilliant.
*And yes, schizophrenia is commonly used to mean a split personality, but that is not the correct meaning in psychology.
5:15 is the 👌👌😝
When I was a kid in the very early seventies, regarding British rock's most loved bands, we would refer to them as The Fantastic 4: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Led Zeppelin.
Its amazing how Pete Townsend. Wrote SO Many Songs!!!!
This was the first album i ever bought after watching the film, still love it now after all these years.
Loved the movie and the album. I lived this story, ...I mean, except the end obviously.
Quadrophenia and Tommy are Rock Operas. They need to be listened to from start to finish. That’s when it's Epic.
🤗 Urging them to listen in 1 sitting and post individually at will. Said, don't care if you in the same clothes 5 Reviews in a row. 🤣😂🤣🤭🐰
@Ijola Fitts Reactors do entire albums too.
@@scottderechinsky9896 🤗 but they do 1 side and have us on the edge of our seats eagerly awaiting the 2nd part! 😏 I could do a Patreon Request like normal folks but..... 🤪 I'm not normal! 😜 Mwaaahaa haha! 🤣😂😭😁🐰
This is an epic album, let me rephrase that This is an EPIC ALBUM. ITS A MASTERPIECE that must or deserves to be played from beginning to end. Read and look at the liner notes and let the music wash over and take you!
THE BEATLES (Revolver/Sgt.Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour), PINK FLOYD's (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here/Animals), HENDRIX's (Are You Experienced/Axis: Bold as Love/Electric Ladyland) and THE WHO's (Tommy/Who's Next/Quadrophenia) were all three in a row masterpieces. Back to back to back!
What I love about The Who is that all participants are all equal. The singer, the guitar the bass and even the drums. The bass and the drums are not just for rythm, they are equal intruments to all other in their songs. I never heard something comparble like that before or after.
I hope you'll continue on with this album!
The Album Quadrophenia is a "Rock Opera" by The Who. Though some songs stand alone as singles the whole album is meant to be listed to as one piece of work - so some songs may be transitional tunes meant to connect one part of the Opera to another - working well in the context of the whole album but not necessarily standing on their own.
Quadrophoenea is an awesome movie as well. Stars Sting from the Police.
It sounds very much like, Love Reign o've Me!
That's because it is. It's part of the overture for the entire album (see my above comment).
First Heard This Album In 1978. Not A Month Goes By Without Me Listening To This! Great Reaction To A Great Album!✌🏻🏴
I played the grooves off this album back in the day. I've seen The Who live twice!
Just an incredible groundbreaking album. Operatic. Check out The Punk Meets The Godfather!
Pete Townshend playing guitar, piano and ARP 2500 synthesizer (the strings).
This is the overture for the entire album- introductory music containing bits of nearly every song on the album. Just like TOMMY, it's really a musical. And like most musicals, the score begins with an overture.
The movie is a cult classic.
Sorry to go off topic, but when are you doing side 2 to Animals?! I can't wait to see what you both think of Pigs!
@@hobnoblegend6646 🤯😳😏 🤭 I was gonna ask same thing. I'm trying to get them to listen in 1 sitting, then post when ready to. But at least the meaning or connections to what was heard before don't get lost in translation. Most I wouldn't bother with, but these guys know there stuff as musicians, producers, mixers & engineers. So Im way harder on them. 😂 Every time they said this this sounds familiar I broke out in my Roger Daltry voice 🎤 "Loooord, Reign o'er me, Loooord...." 🤣😂🤣😂🤭🐰
Both great musicals, but Quadrophenia blows Tommy out of the water.
The theme.
Quadrophenia is a rock opera. All songs fit together. In this instrumental, you hear elements of other songs on the album. Quadrophenia and Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd) are my favorite rock operas.
My #1 favorite album!! ❤️🔥
Love your reactions. Great marketing idea for you. Airplay Beats Bobbleheads! Can put you guys on the dash and it will look like you are reacting to my radio.
😂 that’s a great idea!!
Shut up and take my money - I love that idea 🙂
It's a rock opera/symphony. This is the overture. It previews all of the songs on the record. My favourire Who album!
I've seen the Who 3 times- The second of which was in the mid 90's where all they played was this album, start to finish, with clips from the movie playing on the jumbotron.
You guys need to listen to their album "Who's Next."
"Who's Next" has no bad/weak songs on it. A near perfect album if ever there was one.
I absolutely love that you guys are listening to Quadrophenia! It is such a great album. It would be so cool if you you go through the album song by song. Have a great day!
Great album!
Fucrying out loud I love this album.
The WHO….. “The Kids Are Alright” Tour 1989. Rich Stadium Buffalo N.Y…….. AWESOME
After the concert the Who were being interviewed on the local radio station and the DJ asked the band…. “So what do you think about that new RAP music coming out”…. Roger Daltrey laughed and started to answer when John Entwistle said….. “Let me answer this one….. It seems to me that if you can’t write music, can’t play music, can’t sing music, if you know absolutely nothing at all about music, well then, you do rap now don’t you”….. Then. Pete Townshend said….. “If Hitler was going to come back and torture the world again he would use rap music. Roger Daltrey laughed and said…. “Isn’t that the truth”
I have to disagree with that one. We can read write and play but we do hip hop and there are many more who can read music and write music who can rap.
@@AirplayBeats My own music collection has every song ever done by "Motown Records" from all their artist and most all the great artist doing Rhythm and Blues.
I can't get the image of Hitler rapping got in my head now...😂
@@rhwinner You can thank Pete Townshend for that.
Keith Moon died young from heavy partying. There is a classic interview of Joe Walsh from Th Eagles on the David Letterman show where he was talking about how he, John Belushi of SNL, and Moon went bar hopping. Walsh was honestly scared that he might die given how crazy Moon and Belushi were...he gave his RIPs to his two friends but Walsh said that he was lucky to still be alive and sober after getting into rehab unlike the other two
Thanks for doing more Who. If you're wondering what to do next, try 1967's "I Can See For Miles".
Gentlemen , you're over the Target...yet again .
So appreciate your appreciation for excellence , and insights .
One of the best reaction channels going .
Feel free to react to the entire album.👍🤪
I think we are heading in that direction.
Listened to this as a young mod back in the day, watched the movie. The existential crisis that it evokes. Glad you both got to listen to this.
Should deffo catch the movie though!!
This sounds like an overture from an opera or a Symphony where they play snippets of all the general movements of music throughout the album quadraphenia is a concept album so it makes sense that they would present an overture a preview of the coming music. Now that's a guess since I've never really listened to the entire album myself, just the songs off the album
Gentlemen, seeing how you both love this (as I always have ever since it came out), please check out "Can You Here Me?" from Rennaissance on their album called "Novella". In the song you will hear one of the most beautiful voices in rock history - Annie Haslam.
PS: What sounded familiar toward the end is the instrumental to The Who's "Love, Reign O'er Me".
Most of Quadrophenia is 2 bars soft intro, queue drums, get loud and full with 4/4 marching beat! Love every song on it though.
The song is essential is an 'Overture' to the album.....
Really great instrumental, I agree with a lot of the comments around this being a concept album and hearing it front to back to see just how cohesive a masterpiece it is. Would love you guys reacting to another song on the album, one from Keith's theme and that's Bell Boy and I would love to see the reaction to another great song on this album. You guys are really great and have wonderful insights in to all the music you have covered, love it!!
The Who was another great band, great writing, and so good live! I saw them twice in the 90s and they were among the best shows I ever saw! They really did carve out their own path. Like Floyd, Allmans, Yes or Rush, the Dead, they did their own things. Another great pick guys!
Great reaction, guys! In any Overture,it represents an instrumental rendering of all the songs/parts of what is contained on the entire album. when you said 'sounds familiar', that was the last song on the album 'Love Reign O'er Me' that you reacted to already. When you hear the entire album, any Overture really hits home because you then realize they patched together segments of the whole album. Neal Morse (more current prog rock artist) has written many overtures to his albums. if you want to really have your minds blown by a live performance..react to The Neal MOrse band ' Alive Again' live in concert. after you pick your jaws up off the floor, then we'll talk more about Neal Morse--modern day prog genius! Regards, T
The part that sounded familiar to you guys was Reign O'er Me by the Who
The next song "Cut my hair" is just one of the many great songs on this album but it might well be the best song on the album.
When I was a kid back in the day and my friends would argue who was better The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, I always voted for The Who.
Saw em a couple times in the 70s. Remember my brother bringing this album home. Don't think I've heard it since. Oh ... Keith Moon ? Yeah crazy good.
You should check out some live stuff - earlier stuff from tanglewood, or isle of wight, or the rolling stones rock and roll circus. Apart from their studio stuff, they were even more known for the live performances, particularly in the Keith Moon era.
Incredible album
Brilliant album. Pete Townsend is one of the great British Invasion artists. To get a sense of how powerful a band they were. You must view Young Man Blues, live at The Isle of Wight video. 1970 I believe. Thank you gents for another fun viewing. Do take care.
Love Reign O'er Me. The instrumental version
I knew it sounded familiar
This album is a masterpiece as was who’s next, but you wouldn’t think it is the same band! Won’t get fooled again off of who’s next is one of the greatest rock songs of all time!
Think of this track as an overture like the beginning of an opera. Its full of small samples of the rhythms and the tunes you will hear throughout the album. You recognised one small piano rhythm, which you said you couldn’t put your finger on where you heard it. It was in fact the opening piano piece of Love Rain O’er Me!
Pete's opening riff is epic..
Great start- maybe y’all can do the whole album? You won’t regret it
I think we will do the whole album.
got this album vinyl
The reason it changes up so much is that it has elements of all the songs on the album. It follows the flow of the movie. You have to remember - this is a "Rock Opera" the entire album tells a story- this is the "table of contents" as you will.
Man that ending is EPIC
The part you said sounds familiar is from Love Rain O'r me from this album. My fav!
Pete Townshend was 20 years old when he wrote Tommy. He was 23/24 when he wrote this.
This album and Tommy are best if listened all the way through.. There's a long story to both albums.
Yup!
This album cassette stayed in my i don’t know if you can find it , but you need to see the movie!
This came out in the early 70s when Quad stereo was the only "big-tech" item to have.. I miss them days..
The Who go prog!
Classic!👍🏻
I think that ending called back "Love Rain O'er Me"...
Man that's why I like you guys you delve deep into the music I thought quarterfania was a great album The movie soso. I just wished what happened to the who in Cincinnati never happened though I remember it like it was yesterday Rock on guys
The movie is awesome. Watch it several times a year
Rocking Parliament on wall
I love this album its one of my favourites but have you watched the film its a must please give it a watch.
It’s the overture in this Rock Opera about an alienated mod kid named Jimmy Cooper.
You guys are great, but so you know, this album, along with Tommy, are "rock operas". They tell a story and frequently reprise pieces throughout the composition. Not meant to be played as random tracks bc you lose the context that's been set up. Pink Floyd's Dark Side and the Wall are two other examples. Many YES songs also followed these symphony-like trips. And that's what they were meant to be- trips. They say if you remember it you weren't there. I was there, but the flashbacks are still awesome.
You should continue with the entire album. Don’t worry about the number of songs, many are short pieces, it’s a rock opera. This was the overture to the entire double album. It’s a classic and an essential listen to anyone who wants to understand the history of rock, especially what was happening in the 70’s. Great way to start the day.🔥✌️
Saw them perform this album live and they left us dumbstruck. Take a listen to I Am One. Talk about teenage angst
I think Keith Moon is the most interesting rock drummer of all time. He's relentlessly inventive. This album is his showcase. Listen to "The Real Me" sometime for further proof.
It's the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Much like Pink Floyd, this album needs to be done per side as songs bleed into each other. You are now my favorite music reaction channel. Thanks.
Thank You!!
I'm having this track played at my funeral (to experience the ups and downs of life in music form) or...im not going!
This gives you the four themes/personalities throughout the story. Great movie was made based on this album. Check it out if you can.
Epic.
Do anything off “ WHO’S NEXT” baba o’reily, behind blue eyes, won’t get fooled again…. any of it.
6:00 kinda sounds like when Pink Floyd comes outta the long bridge in Echoes
This, like Tommy, was more of a rock opera concept album. So this song was an overture highlighting pieces of the rest of the album just like a Broadway play would do or a Mozart Opera would do
Need to watch the movie Tommy. Quadrophenia is a rock opera
😂🤣😂 It sounds familiar because you've reacted to 'Love, Reign o'er Me' by them a month ago! 🤫 It's basically the song without the words. 🤗 Also why it's ok to do a bunch of songs in 1 sitting even if you post them months apart. 🤔 I bet if you heard this and LRoM in the same sitting, you would have made the connection. 🥰🐰
The track Quadrophenia is a sort of overture of most of the tracks on the album. This whole album tells a story. You should listen to it as a full album and in order. I feel confident that you guys will enjoy the music.
👍, but ALL of it
It's the "reign O'er me" refrain
This is not really a song per se...it's the album's overture. Snippets of each song you are about to hear in full on the album. This entire album is epic.
