Agreed. There's also a lot of players whose skill set was devalued after the analytics revolution, like contact hitters who don't walk a lot, or catchers who can throw out baserunners but are mediocre at framing.
20:30 I’m from the west coast so I’ve only been to Boston once. My grandpa grew up in the NE and we visited in 2005ish. Went to a game at Fenway. White Sox hit a ball into the gap and Damon chased after it. Threw it in, of course his arm was terrible. Swear to God the lady in front of us yelled, in her Mass accent “what kind of Sally throw was that?!?” Red Sox came from behind to win, Papi hit 2 HRs, we sang Sweet Caroline, it was a perfect day.
One thing on five tool players. I always thought of the running tool as flawed because it is just thinking about speed. To me, a run tool is about how good you are on the bases, regardless of speed. Look at a guy like Aaron Judge, who is low in sprint speed, but rarely makes base running mistakes, steals bases once in a while and doesn't often get caught, reads the ball well and gets good jumps to take an extra base, he runs hard out of the box and takes good turns. To me, he's a five tool player, but to almost everyone else he's a 4 tool. But wouldn't you rather have Judge on the bases in a big spot than the much speedier Gleyber Torres?
I always thought tools were about raw talent. Like, you can get a 70 in arm even if you have a bad habit of never hitting the cutoff man as an OF or are occasionally off target as an IF.
So if 25 teams were listed as teams at least one player said they'd like to sign with if roster/salary/taxes etc were taken out of the equation, which were the 5 teams not a single player said they'd want to play for?
I will state this, as someone who works at a MLB Stadium - I wouldn't be too happy to have the season shorter. Going down from 162 to say - 150 - means 12 less games. That's 6 less home games or one homestand - that's one less paycheck overall from every stadium worker in MLB (a loss of anywhere from $500 to $2500 USD depending on job, department, and location.) Shortening the season does have knock down effects for a LOT of people, not just the players and owners. I won't state how much I personally would lose having one less homestand (I don't think my employer would like that), but it would affect things like off-season unemployment benefits from State Governments & State-mandated Health Care (AKA Obamacare). I would think there would be pushback not just from Owners, but possibly from Unions associated with Stadium Workers toward shortening the season without some type of financial stipulation to dampen the loss of a paycheck.
Love this Jimmy. Two things: The Connor Joe story gets even more sad when you realize he's been playing a lot of first base, what a use of that one tool. Second: Webb also benefits from having the top rated pitch framer behind the plate in Patrick Bailey, I feel like that's such a part of it because PB steals so many strikes
The one about not going to the Rockies shocked me a little bit. Stone Age or not, hitting and pitching in thin air half the season has to be a decent stat boost. And Denver can be a pretty fun city, the few times I have been there.
