Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at, and I'm gonna show you how to install the etrailer Class three two-inch hitch receiver on our 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is already a very versatile vehicle. They make roof racks for the top so you can carry more items. You do have some trunk space. You have a backseat that you can throw some items in but a hitch receiver is gonna give you the ability to haul a bike rack, a cargo carrier to carry a little extra cargo or maybe even a small trailer.
This hitch is gonna feature a two inch by two inch hitch opening. It will have a 5/8 inch hitchpin hole. For most of your accessories that's what they're gonna take. A hitchpin does not come included with this hitch but most of your accessories will have them come with them. The safety chain loops are gonna be nice and wide so you can fit many different size safety chains in them and it's gonna have a nice matte black powder coat finish.
The reason I like that so much is our bumper is going to be matte black that comes factory from Jeep so it's gonna match it really well. This hitch receiver is going to have a 350 pound tongue weight rating and a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That is going to be the trailer plus the load included. Now some measurements for you guys so you know what you're getting. From the center of our hitchpin hole to the outermost part of our bumper, it's gonna be about 2 1/2 inches.
From the center of our hitchpin hole to the outermost part of our spare tire is gonna be about nine inches. This is a factory spare tire so if you have an aftermarket spare tire those measurements are going to be different. From the ground to the top inside of the receiver tube, it's gonna be about 21 inches. Again, we're sitting at stock height. We have a Jeep Rubicon so that should give you a pretty good idea of what accessory is gonna fit best with this Jeep.
As far as the insulation goes it's going to be a very, very easy installation. You can definitely do it in your driveway at home. Let's go ahead and take the Jeep inside and show you how we did it. To begin our installation we're going to be lowering our exhaust. The insulation instructions will say to do so to make more room. We've tried installing this hitch without lowering the exhaust and it's really hard to get the longer bolts in place. So to lower it, we'll take a strap and just hook it on the rear portion of our bumper here, cinch it up and then we'll take some soapy water and we're gonna spray the exhaust hangers to make it a little bit slicker so we can slide them off. We'll just take a pry bar or a screwdriver, should be able to pry it against the frame. Now with our one hanger off we can lower our exhaust a little bit. We just need to get a little bit of flex out of it so that we can get our bolts in place up here. If your Jeep has these two factory bolts, we'll need to remove those. (wrench cranks) Let's take those two bolts out and we will not be reusing them. Now we're ready to get our hitch in place. If you had those two factory bolts in place you'll see this plate. We'll need to slid our hitch between the plate and the rear bumper beam. So what we can do here this will stick a pry bar up behind it and try to get the front portion of our hitch behind that plate. Here we go. If you're having trouble sliding it up into place you can usually take a soft blow hammer. This is gonna be a really tight fit which is nice, but we can just pop it up into place. (hammer bangs) And we can take our hardware that comes included in our kit. We'll start with a flat washer and our long bolt. We'll slide it into the hitch holes. We have to work it around a little bit to try to get it to line up with all the holes. With all of our hardware slid through since we had these two factory weld nuts and the factory bolts, we're only gonna need to use two of the flange nuts but we can install one on each of our bolts. (bolt grinds) Now we can take a pair of 19 millimeter wrenches and tighten it down. (wrench cranks) With our two center bolts in place because we have those weld nuts, we will be reusing the factory hardware. Now we can torque our hardware to the specifications in the instructions. (tool cranks) The last thing we're gonna do is raise our exhaust back up into place and get that hangar back on. Otherwise that's gonna do it for the insulation.

For a 2023 Jeep Wrangler, we'd recommend the Curt # C56407 4-pole trailer wiring harness. Here's a link to the product page, where you can see an install video.
