Author's notes
The Royal Spanish Academy (Real Academia Española) removed 'Ch' and 'LL' from the alphabet back in 1994. Words starting with 'CH' & 'LL' in some more recent dictionaries will appear in the 'C' or 'L' sections.
The 'RR' was removed because the trilled sound occurs in the letter 'r' at the beginning of a word and when it comes before some consonants.
All this means is that I'll post an updated version of this video sometime in the future!

Sure I have a revised video where I try to explain the current "standard" alphabet and then offer some additional names for letters.
Sí. Letters are not doubled very commonly in Spanish.
Some common exceptions would be:
'cc', (ex: la construcción)
'rr' (ex: el perro)
'll' (ex: la calle)
These will have a different sound than the single versions: (c, r, l)...
One exception is 'r' at the beginning of the word usually sounds like 'rr'

Lo bueno en saber los nombres de las letras (aunque varían un poco entre el mundo hispanohablante) es que si alguien no entiende algo, puede pedir que se escriba para entender mejor.

Hola everyone!! I'm spanish and i like this videos, they are very funny for me. (And this is a better way of wasting the time at work). Just two little things. V is not pronunciated "ve" , V es "uve" y W es "uve doble". But it depends if you are learning Spanish from Spain or Spanish from South America. If you go to spain and say "doble be" everyone will stare at you like an alien. Un saludo!! (means greetings)
The 'a' in 'alliance' is similar to the 'a' in Spanish, but it's more like a schwa ("uh" sound in English)
Do you happen to live in an English speaking country? If so you should be able to hear a substantial difference between Spanish and English especially in pronunciation.
It's covered in linguistics courses, which you are required before becoming a foreign language teacher.

2. Literally when someone asks "¿Cómo se escribe...?" it translates to 'How is it written?' which would lead someone to spell it...
As cire3000 says, you can also say '¿Cómo se deletrea?'
The phonetic spelling of the sound for the letter 'J' is 'jota'. Its sound of the letter is similar to the 'h' sound in English.
My pronunciation of "Jordan" is an americanization. In Spanish, the river and the country would be 'Jordán' with the emphasis on the last syllable and the Spanish pronunciation rules applying.

Because it's a question (asking for someone's name), when you are not asking something then it's written without the accent mark but if you are asking then it is "¿cómo..."

Depending on if you're a prescriptivist or a descriptivist when it comes to language will determine how you feel about that fact. ;-)

The sounds that are produced by the letter clusters "ch", "ll" and "rr" still exist in the Spanish language.
so 'l' is pronounced like an 'l'
'll' is pronounced like 'y'
'c' is pronounced like 'k' or 's'
'ch' is pronounced like 'ch'

Y = i griega. we Spanish people call it "i griega" only when we're spelling and we'd say "ye" (jeh) when we say the alphabet. Just thought I'd point that out. Nice video btw!!! I can tell you know Spanish very well man.

I agree with you. I am a Spanish Speaker. It will depent on the country. some countries use different pronunaciation. W = doble uve, doble u, doble be. V = uve, be chica, V corta, ve. Keep on mind that "ch", "ll" are not any more a single letter in the Alphabet. they have to be pronounced as individual letters."c" + "h" "l", "l". or double "l" not eany more as "che" or "elle"

Just as comments, In Mexico, we say "doble r" for "rr", "doble u" for "w", and "y" is also common to say "ye" instead of " y griega", mostly in math.

Your right, the newer versions of the alphabet do NOT contain "ll", "rr" or "ch", or so I was told....
Ñ wasn´t deleted, still exist. "LL" and "CH" were'nt deleted from formal spanish alpahabet but words that starts with these cononants are part of L and C words in the dictionary ex: "Llama" is in "L" words not in "LL" words. "RR" is not a consonant of the alfhabet, its a sound when you put double "r".
Missing the letter C, for it's A, B, C, D, E...
ch, ll, rr were taken out from the alphabet.
In south america V takes the same sound as B.
When someone says "it takes an R (and makes a rolling R sound) it is understood as ONE R.
If you want to say that it takes two R, you say "doble R" ("double R" in English). So, the letter R can be called /r/ or /rr/ and will always be taken as one R.
That's how it works in Venezuela. I thought it could be helpful.

The video is good, congratulations. If you allow me to, I just would change two thigs: the letter "rr" when we spell we say doble "r"(erre), actually we call the letter "r" alone by "erre" with strong sound not like "ere".
The other thing is the last word you spelled was Jordan, strictily in spanish we don't read Jordan as (Yordan) but pronouncing the "J" as the "h" in Horse.

and also, I don't know if it is a glitch on my computer but the "KA" actually sounded funny.
usually in spanish, 'ch' 'll' and 'rr' are not considered there own letter.
Also, 'w' isnt technically part of the spanish alphabet, it was added for foreign words so its like how 'ñ' isnt an english letter, but still used for foreign spanish words like jalapeño and piñata
Another thing, In "el abecedario Mexicano" are not more included: "ch", "ll", "rr" , they are now handling in some grammar rules as I know, well Im not a Spanish teacher, but preparing tech reports is what I do.

All my Spanish teachers in Guatemala described rr the same as Sr. Jordan, not a doble r. Many opinions on this subject.

I'm not trying to argue with you. In your other comments, you make good points. But for the sake of people being led astray your comment, I must dispute your point here.
The vowel in 'fast' or 'rat' is not the same as /a/ in Spanish. I've never heard native Spanish speakers pronounce the 'a' like you describe.

extremely important, for example the words "caro" and "Carro" mean two completely different things, caro is expensive and Carro is a Car. Same thing with "pero" and "Perro". Pero is But, and El Perro is Dog. So pronunciation is important.
Tienes razon en lo de la pronunciacion de "b" y "v". Pero lo cierto es que nadie en España lo pronuncia diferente, siempre lo pronunciamos como "b"

To all people learning spanish, Ñ was deleted from the alphabet. Also LL, if I am not wrong. Ah, RR as well.
And "doble v" it's also "doble u"

ur right theres no difference between thepronunciation of B and V..it doesnt matter how it sounds...but the name of those letters are different, they are not both "be" ,,B is "be" and the V is "uve"..people say "la be larga (b) y la be corta (v)" pero eso no esta correcto..lo correcto es decir "be" por B...y "uve" por V (eso es mas preciso para cuando deletrees algo) hope this help! bye

@MrCliffhangar The first one is a formal way to talk to someone (someone you don't know to well, or someone you've just met, used with elderly people too). The other one is the informal way (to talk with your friends, girlfriend, family).
The first one uses the "ustedeo" and the second one "tuteo". Though, in spanish you don't need to add these to the sentence to make sense. "¿Cómo se llama 'usted(unnecessary, and sounds odd)'?, ¿Cómo te llamas 'tú(unnecessary, and sounds odd)'?

@Lunarmoonbase2 Well, if you notice, Spain is the main spanish-speaking country, and they, as a Realm, can control their own language, that applies to all spanish-speaking country that would like to adopt their rules. It isn't necessary to follow them, but they have got criteria for that things, the RAE Parlament establishes which words should be accepted as formal words in the dictionary, for example if even a 'common' word begins to be used in more countries and places, it may be accepted soon

This year 2010 "Y" has changed his name to "ye". These rules were made by RAE which is an academy that make the rules of the spanish language around the world.

Viera que a lo mejor estoy viviendo en el pasado. Los que conozco de latinoamérica son mayores de edad. Por eso la confusión. Un amigo mío que tiene alrededor de veinte en Guadalajara, México me confirmó lo que usted dice. Cuando ve una palabra que tiene 'ch', él la deletrea 'ce hache'... no tiene sentido realmente puesto que tienen su propio sonido.
