  • The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which will enter into application on 30 December 2024, requires that operators placing relevant commodities - such as cocoa and its derived products- on the EU market to gather “conclusive and verifiable” information that these were not produced in a forest area that was converted to agricultural purposes after December 31, 2020. In the context of their due diligence process, operators may layer cocoa plot geolocation with data on forest cover in 2020 in order to assess the risk that the plot is located in an area that was forested before the cut-off date and manage that risk if necessary.
The European Forest Institute (EFI), as part of the European Union Sustainable Cocoa Programme, supports cocoa producing countries in developing policies, tools and data useful for ensuring and demonstrating cocoa sustainability. This presentation was delivered to members of the World Cocoa Foundation and the European Cocoa Association to share information and foster exchanges on best approaches to use national data in the context of EUDR diligence, using the example of national spatial data available in Côte d’Ivoire.
The presentation covers the following points:
    • Reminder of the detailed requirements of the EUDR and the data implications for operators' due diligence
    • State of play in terms of national and public data availability in cocoa producing countries
    • Review of the main characteristics of the available Côte d’Ivoire national spatial data and approach to processing this data for the due diligence of the EUDR
    • Additional spatial data that can be used to verify land use and the implications for risk analysis and risk mitigation methodology.
