  • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging is gaining global attention and adoption. This brings to the forefront the need to harmonise EPR across diverse regions, especially given the global interconnectedness of the economy and consumer packaged goods markets.
There are many different approaches to the strategy, and many go beyond providing for end-of-life services to promote responsible product design, infrastructure improvements and market development. Effective EPR is often seen as a necessary piece of the puzzle in addressing the current recycling challenges and concern over single-use packaging waste. EPR schemes aim to encourage producers to change design at the start to ensure that the materials and packaging are truly recyclable and recovered at end of life.
The intergovernmental Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) definition of Extended Producer Responsibility identifies two specific features: the shifting of responsibility for disposal ‘upstream’ from municipalities to producers and encouragement through incentives to make the design of products more environmentally friendly.
This webinar seek to better understand what EPR really looks like in Europe, Germany, India and Asia including the revised EU Packaging & Packaging Waste (PPW) Directive, EPR legislations, eco modulation and other product stewardship programs that are working successfully. EPR programs differ around the world and this webinar will help to show you how various countries and regions are working towards lowering environmental impacts of their materials and packaging and ensuring that we have packaging that is circular by design. By attending this session you will be able to find out more about what is working and steps towards a more harmonised approach to EPR globally. The panellists will also share tips to improve EPR programs and discuss the barriers and challenges that they have experienced establishing an EPR program in their region.
The panel discussion is moderated by:
Nerida Kelton - Vice President Sustainability & Save Food - World Packaging Organisation (WPO) & Executive Director - Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP)
    The panelists include:
Antro Säilä - President - EPIC - European Packaging Institutes' Consortium & Chairman - Rinki, the Finnish Packaging Recycling company & Chairman - Scandinavian Packaging Association
Dr Priyank Arya - Vice President - Waste Management & Recycling Society (WMARS) & Founder Director - EHS Services
Vivian Loftin - Co-Founder of Recyda
Joseph Doherty - Managing Director Re-Gen Waste

Thank you for the presentation, i would have loved to be in teh discussion. we have common understanding of EPR which is used across the world in Asia and in Europe. There are significant aspects which difference steardship from EPR.
EPR is a holistic policy tool which is very powerful and a critical enabler! There are OECD guidelines, there are WWF principles which are shared with governments for managing EPR implementation.

PRNs was the decision of UK industry to implement teh EU Packaging Dirctive and the understanding that collection is happening autimatically in case there is recycling capacity. which led to the structure of PRNs to buy for capacity- it did not work out that there was an auction for needed capacity and it did not energize collection. Council were stopping collection in case revenues did not support the cost, information was and is different along the councils.
EPR covers collection cost for meeting collection targets, cover sorting and take into consideration revenues of secondary material market. That means expensive non recyclable packaging are changing - towards recyclable packaging and packaging materials with value which has a lower EPR fee.
Competitive systems though do not calculate fees and the contracts are tendered and negotiated which does not lead to tranparency and competition among packaging materials
