I am a veteran. Cheers to Captain Patch. Thank you for your sacrifice and for what you have done for this country. Kudos to the âhandle bars challenge.â Interesting feat. Your Vlog is amazing. It is not the views that make it worthwhile. It is your willingness to challenge yourself in a sport of that includes endurance, misery and pain. At the same time, you must maintaining confidence, a sense of humor and graciousness. âI know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability to elevate oneâs life by a conscious endeavorâ-Henry David Thoreau. Bravo to your strong will. Accolades to your fortitude and enthusiasm. Wishing you peace and good fortune. Happy Trails!
Thank you for your service.
@@susanboatman7913 Thank you for what you are doing! Be well. Happy Trails!
Thank you I love pushing myself
Leo needs merch and a bootie sponsorship! Love the content Micheal, keep it up, you got this!
He has merch check out our store here on YT
@@ISuckatHiking dang! I missed that but will definitely shop this weekend!
Leo needs his own channel. Beautiful dog that appears very well behaved and confident.
This is his channel I'm just a sidekicks
14:47 my stove is a must have creature comfort. I feel better when I eat something hot after hiking a lot of miles.
After only using it twice in 20 days it was just more weight
I love watching the way Leo takes thre lead. I've seen dogs on the trail, but Leo is a trail dog and there IS a difference!
He is
David Goggins in your head! Kind of love that. Enjoying your hike, itâs a joy to see Leo with his tail up, keeping an eye on you.
Thanks
Thank you both for your service to our country! And Leo for his service to you! Give Leo a hug for me! ððšðļ
Thank you
Re: Gear change...what you are describing with that uncontrollable shivering sounds to me like first stage hypothermia...the gear changeout was the thing to do...can't predict all conditions perfectly. Sounds like you may even have saved a little weight! The Pat Torrentshell looks perfect even at 14 oz, since you sent the other raingear home. I live in the Rockies and have a Helly Hansen Aden lined shell for weather and cold. Safety over weight! Glad you are okay! Stay as warm and dry as you can. Some liner gloves? Maybe?
Absolutely first stages of hypothermia. MD here.
@@MrA1582000 After first stage hypothermia, IIRC, cognitive clarity suffers and very poor decisions, even life-threatening ones, can result. Another way to put it might be mental fogginess generates confusion and inability to even figure out what to do next or what course of action to take....safety is top priority here.
I got it fixed now thank you!
@@ISuckatHikingthe rest of us can learn from this. That includes me. No offense meant, just concern.
Omgosh, those climbs were rough, but y'all did it! Beautiful scenery. It's weird how it went from green to brown on the trail. So crazy about mountains. And Leo, you're just so dang cute. He reminds me of the Airdale terrier I had growing up. Her fur looked just like that when it grew out. People would stop and say she looked like a muppet. Lol
I've been following for a little bit. Now Im going back and watching your videos from earlier.
Thanks for bringing us along and big hugs to Leo. That's also my grandsons name.

Thank you
Yay canât wait for Leoâs commentary. He is just adorable!

Tough hike. Congrats to all.
Thank you
Georgia trail maintainers are next level. It spoils you thinking the rest of the trail is like that which it most certainly isnât!!!
One more day to Fontana and the Smokies! Letâs go!!!!
Georgia was nice
Yes!!! GATC volunteers rock
It ia amazing how leo just knows which direction the AT trail goes through the woods.
I was thinking the same thing what a dog
He was born for this
@@torzecjohns6429Me too! I was just telling my husband the same thing ðĪĢ
Im sorry Michael but Leo is the Star of this channel
I know ð
Live and learn - stay strong! Stay motivated! Stay dry!
Always!
FYI..there is no rain jacket that will keep you dry...being water proof your body heat will cause the rain gear to heat up and you will get wet anyway....I thru hiked 40 years ago and used a poncho with grommets so I could tie the ends tight around my pack...it kept everything dry ...pack and myself...
Old school still works so well doesn't it.
@@Feribrat99 yes.....for sure...
Thanks for the info!
Looks like your going to need a sweat bandana or rag of some sort. I could feel your eyes burning in that clip! I kept squinting and blinking like it was somehow going to help you. ð
I got one now!
Wow what a day, what a climb. Of course everyone is waiting for Leoâs full commentary tomorrow. Great job yâall.
Yes! Thank you!
As someone who will be taking their Service Dog with them as well, I'm looking forward to Leo's video!
Awesome
Appreciate the videos! I've been unsuccessful finding an AT hiker VLOG that I could stay engaged with day after day, but I think I've finally found one. Great job. Looking forward to seeing what further adventures await. I've yet to find the time to do the thru-hike but have completed Roanoke (VA) to the PA/NJ state line thus far in sections.
Thank you so much!
I get your dislike of poles, but itâs places like these that theyâve saved my butt more than once. ð Leo is a trooper for sure!
I don't dislike them. I just found myself carrying them more than using them. And if you don't use something, don't bring it
Thanks for the awesome hike Leo and camera crew!ð
Thursday, March 07th: Captain Patch is fine as long as he accepts it. Many hikers change their Trail names more than once. Good luck! Happy Trails! Ross08
He likes it
Hey! Met you on the foothills trails. I had my dog with me. Glad to see you on the AT! Hate to hear the gear issues and stage 1 hypothermia but sometimes it takes firsthand experiences to learn. Iâve reached stage 2 hypothermia in the past. It snuck up on me as I hiked through drizzle and fog. It was the odd thoughts that tipped me off that I had stage 2 hypothermia but I confirmed my suspicions when I added more layers and started shivering uncontrollably. On the foothills trail all my gear was soaked through so I spent the evening till midnight drying everything out. I learned really quickly how important it was to have the ability to dry out my gear. Going into big storms & gear failure risks I will bring a a small fire brick to make sure I can keep a fire going long enough to stay safe. Safe journey.
Thank you it was great meeting you there!
As a big sweater myself, its very difficult to combat it unless you have a gentle breeze all of the time and no coat on, no fear of that happening, so I will be interested to know how the new rainwear tackles rain from the inside out
It works good
That level of cold is not good. I could tell you were miserable. I hope your new jacket works well. I love the Leo intro's... I think you nail his inner voice! Your videos are next level. My great- grandpa (a real cowboy in North Dakota) had a mustache like yours. He had a special cup to drink coffee. Of course this was the 1800s, though. Thats weird to say. Lol...Thank you so much for taking us along! Hike on!
Got it figured out thanks!
Canât wait for Leoâs video!
It's coming
Jacob's Ladder at the end of the day! You guys are beasts!
Yeah that wasn't fun but it had to be done
The weather really plays a factor on this hike doesnât it ? Seems more rainy cold days than the sun. Is it just how it is on this trail or time of year? I get the elevation aspect but still. The sun is glorious tho. I know what u mean about rejoicing in it after so much rain. Totally changes everything. Leo is a trooper out there. Iâve seen comments about ppl asking about taking their dog on this trail and basically saying a hard No on it-but he can hang !
Kudos to Tyler. My son is transitioning out of the army this year âĶ.nature has SO many healing qualities for not only former military but ppl in general. It just takes a whole diff meaning for those like Tyler. Iâve watched it with my own son. Blessings to you both !
Thank you
You and Leo are definitely setting an FKT (funnest known time).
We try
Consider tying a bandana to your front straps for sweat wipes. You're both powering though. Beautiful day, and views from the ridge
I got me a rag now
Just found your channel today and proceeded to binge watch your first 10 days while working...Can't wait for Leo takeover day! Thank you for the awesome videos!
Welcome aboard!
Leo will make you keep your pace. ð He is fast!!

Youâre going to LOVE the Franconia Ridge
Watching you from NH
Thank you!
Love this, I go backpacking with Cora my flat coat goldendoodle great video
Love that!

Very!
David Goggins is one of the most mentally tough guys out there.
He is
Love the Leo voice over!
Thank you
Leo takeover!!!!!! Wooooohoooooo!!!!!!! ðâĪ
It's going to be great
Fighting the condensation on your glasses is no fun. Share your frustration with that. Also, watching these hike logs has made us so much more aware of steep hills around our area and appreciate what you are going thru on your thru. As I local hike through easy peasey "rails to trails" I wonder how I would scramble up our steeps if they were part of the AT. And note the photos don't capture that steepness for anybody it seems!!! Stay safe!
Very true!
Leoâs the best!!
He is awesome
Looking forward to Leo's commentary ðĐ
It's going to be great
Leo takeover dayâĶ Yeah!!! Enjoying your videos so much! Hike onâĶ..btw.. Iâm a veteran and Captain Patch awesome trail name!
He owns it now
Yeaaahhh. LEO DAY ! canât wait âĪ
It's going to be good
All caught up. Can't wait to watch Leo's day!
It's good to be great
Sweat won't evaporate in the rain. 100% humidity. Body trying to cool itself off but since the sweat won't evaporate it makes more sweat. Just soaks ya. Why not use umbrella yesterday in the rain? I use my umbrella in the rain and don't wear my jacket to cool off but if it's still a hard climb I am going to sweat still too. Part of it I guess. Like you said stay moving and have dry clothes in your quilt when stopping. I have tried Merino and synthetics but I sweat alot and will soak them both in the rain
My glasses also fog up in the rain. Gets to where I can't see. Try to keep a cloth to wipe them off every now and then. I need them but gets to a point where I just take them off
I sweat a lot and the umbrella didn't keep me dry at all
Looking forward to it Leo!!
Your going to love it
What type of glasses frame do you have? I like the style. I have glasses and about to get some new ones
Roka
Killer day! Great job

You should add Leo links also. Like how his shoes fit. My doodle is very interested.

How about Leo: Doesn't he need/want a mustache like yours?! :)
We may do that

I think it's definitely a mistake to underestimate you. You obviously did a lot of research prior to setting out. First I saw of you was a short posted by Kyle Hates Hiking, which was dubious of your chances and the comment section reflected that. Right now, I'm looking back at that clip, thinking Kyle and his comment section are gonna look like punks in a few months..
It's all good Kyle is a good guy
I want to give you some input
1. Not using your poncho was dumb
2. Having multiple pieces of rain gear while you have a poncho is dumb.
3. While your poncho is customized thepacka I've mentioned to you before would have eliminated every problem you mentioned in this video.
3. Not starting a fire to dry out you and your clothes is dumb
4. After all the mentioning how cold you were and the rain you then go up significant elevation and then not stay in your tent at night is dumb.
The elevation gain +the season you're in + night time temp drops and yet you chose that instead of inside your tent where it's warmer sorry but that's irresponsible
Hard cold truth.
We were coming down to a heated stay so it was fine but thanks for the input
@@ISuckatHiking BTW you and I have conversed before. I also wasn't trying to be rude, I'm just blunt.
How do you keep Leo warm ?
He has a built in fleece the warmers on the planet
Are you wearing merino wool shirts?
Yes
What does Leo sleep in to keep warm?
He has a puffy and a fleece but really never needs the fleece
Buy yourself a head sweatband.
Got it covered
I wonder if Kyle (from trail tales) is watching you hike with Leo. He didn't think it was a good idea. I wonder if his opinion would change after seeing Leo hike.
Itâs only day 10, still I want Kyle to be wrong cause I want to see Leo make it!
He is missing out ð
Leo is the best but he should be let on leash.
We can disagree on that
Not every cold-soaker is a psychopath, but every psychopath is a cold-soaker. ð kidding. Iâll never understand how someone could cold soak for 4-5 months, tho! ðĪĒ
If you told me "No hot coffee, no hot dinners", I'd go home.
It's not that bad only eat ð once a day
@@ISuckatHiking once a day! You must have the metabolism of a hibernating bear! ðŧ rawwr! Thatâs very lucky though. Less money for food!
Breathable rain gear is a waste of money. Wear what commercial fishermen wear, and go slow. Even a plastic bag works better.
Helly Hansen for the win!
I got it figured out now
So I guess I'll come clean, I've only been sticking around for Leo ðŦĢ it was obvious when you said the other day people don't know you're name only Leo's, and at that moment I realized "yep, don't know his name"ð Hope you get your rain gear figured out!
Thanks
