This week on the Ident Review, we take a look at the channel that replaced BBC Knowledge, and one that has one of the longest running main idents in TV history. It's BBC Four!

They should do a variant of Space where the image splits and each board reveals the logos of BBC One, Two, Three and Four respectively!

I believe the newer idents starting from Cherry Blossom simply use the same piece of footage, but each segment ends up using different sizings, positions, crops and colour grades to make it look like for different takes.

Am I the only one to have noticed that the later "external" idents that split into four are shot at different times of the day?

I wish Celtic Woman would appear on the screens on BBC FOUR, I normally watched the latest instalments on Sky Arts. With extremely talented ladies like Orla, Mairead, Meav, Lisa, Chloe and Hayley. A New Journey is my favourite.
Television is quite a spooky ident, especially seeing that it retains the alternative music that Trees introduced.

BBC 4 idents were so relaxing, especially on (late) Sunday nights

I love the glorious and unforgettable BBC 2 Idents made by Martin Lambie-Nairn back in 1990s. They were three-dimensional and beautifully chunky: the "Powder" ident, "Excalibur", "Paint", "Swan", "Silk" "Fluffy Dog" "Water" "Daywave", "Nightwave", "Glass". Oh! And the only two-dimensional one as well: "Optics". They all delivered magic, fun and a surprising factor. And their soundtracks were quite something!
After that the BBC has sadly abandoned the three-dimensional route and gone towards the two-dimensional one: photography and computer-generated imagery. The lazy sods! Such a shame!
Now these BBC 4 Idents are pretty but rather bland and tame given that BBC 4 is the most cultural channel among BBC 1, BBC 2 and BBC 4 and for this reason BBC4 should be more daring and more artistic with its idents, maybe by reviving the Martin Lambie-Nairn school, using the number 4 instead of the number 2 this time or something along those lines.
I see where you are going, but there is a reason why these idents lasted for so long with new revisions. These idents are really beautiful and really clever. Also, photography and computer generated imagery aren’t always 2D. Case in point, the Oneness idents, which I don’t really like, and the current idents for BBC Two, which I love. The Two idents are computer generated, but they have been great successors of the original 2s. Some even pay homage to them. I am just saying that they are still doing their best with their idents, while still being in 3D. Just because it’s computer generated doesn’t mean it is lazy.
Also, RIP Martin Lambie-Nairn.
My favorite were the "Lake", "Swimming Pool", "Flowers", "Space", "Beacon" and "Television" idents.

What about the Channel 4 Square Idents like the kids idents that ran before The Hoobs or The Clangers on Saturday Mornings
I wonder why the BBC have kept these BBC Four Idents for all this time and not rebranded them by now

Maybe they just forgot about bbc four
Naw. They still made revisions to the logo, and had a presentation rebrand, meaning the idents are still there, but other parts of it, like bumpers, had a rebrand with the BBC Reith font, and design that incorporates the ident idea into the ending of the bumper. So yeah, they didn’t really forget about Four.
I believe they're finally being replaced next month, as the BBC logo is changing.

Yes, all the ones he didn’t really get were 4 seasons (cherry tree, house roof, burning boat, circle of trees). It was a running motif, and one very appropriate for BBC Four.

Now, the only one that's left from the BBC is the BBC News Channel.
