    A great passion that every heroquest player would envy when complete. Costing will be the ultimate challenge for most. Imagine this with a 3D painted board❤

      Thank you! You’re right on the costing… I think the woodwork/3d printing would have to be better than what someone could create at home as an amateur. Then it’s a matter of pricing within the impulse buy range of folks with the disposable income ANd the passion for HQ! :)

    I played this at Mythic Con. It was SO MUCH FUN! You wanted suggestions so here goes.
    1. Make a short follow-up video showing how folks can add their own sounds.
    2. Make a short follow-up video showing folks how it can be adapted to other tabletop games
    3. Provide unfinished versions that allow the buyer to put their own aesthetic flavor to it.
    Other than that, it's AWESOME! I look forward to seeing the finished product!

      DM! That's epic feedback. Thank you! There's a few mods we want to make first before teaching the world!
      The likelyhood is, I'll offer an electronics kit of all the parts to make this, but truly, I'm convinced that the carpentry of the enclosure adds so much value as well! Very few people I know have the skills that Jim has, nevermind a giant laser cutter to do it all! :)

      @TerrainTronics  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is brilliant! I'm off to watch some BloodBowl youtubes. I think we'd give both players a remote control each (at each end of the table) with a few arcade buttons that'd trigger effects and sounds.

      @@TerrainTronics Get Blood Bowl 2 the video game on PC! It'll help teach the rules. Blood Bowl 3 you basically need to know the rules to play.

    This sounds like a great product. As for the idea to make this a "DIY" kit ... it would best for the wood/MDF components to come as a flatpack to lower the shippingvolume and costs. Plus it would need to come pre-programmed where all that the people would have to do is to prepare the SD-Card with files named 1-30. As for customizing the lights to match the effects... hmm maybe a fixed set of colours and motions put in a config-file (like 1:WHITE:FLASHING) so you can keep this Projekt as low-code as possible and you have a solid kit there.
    That way it could even be multi-purpose with the first 10 cards haveing the effects for Heroquest, Cards 11-30 triggering effects for DnD and so on.
    As for compatible games? Heroquest is a great first pick, but Blood Bowl would be a great match as well! DnD with some terrain / map? Brilliant!
    As for features... thats tricky ... lights in the playarea (as opposed to around it as in your current prototype) would be awesome, but would require hefty customisation. But maybe you clever people can figure something out?
    Sounds are covered ... what else is there? Motion? Hard to incorporate ... but a magnetic track that moves magnetized minis? Hmmm ...
    Anyway I love the idea and if you manage to make it a viable product I want to encourage you to take the idea others put in the comments and run a Kickstarter! (And please not only a US one ... we Europeans want cool toys as well!)

    • @TerrainTronics
      @TerrainTronics  หลายเดือนก่อน

      So much to digest there! I need to discuss if we should do a kit with Jim. Electronics wise it’s a reasonable request… but wood wise - need to talk to him!

      @TerrainTronics Hmm if you dont own a lasercutter I am sure you can find people to collaborate with. Unless you live in a very rural area of the U.S. there is probably a makerspace somwhere in your area where you might meet helpfull individuals

    • @TerrainTronics
      @TerrainTronics  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's where we originally started, but the variable size of a dnd table made wiring a little challenging along with the high mix of different moves players expect to be able to do.
      I think once we get a fixed-size board game format completed, I'll look into making wireless card readers etc.
      One step at a time! :)

    Ok, soundbite ideas that just popped in my head at 6:30am because I can't sleep and this video shows up in my algorithm: Gandalf: "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!", Anything from Arnold's Conan movies, He-Man: "BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL! I HAVE THE POWER!", Skeletor (laugh), Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: "It's Morphin Time!" and Green Ranger Dragon Dagger Flute jingle, Megaman- boss select jingle, Final Fantasy- victory jingle. That's all I got for now.

    Wow. I run an afterschool gaming club for Middle Schoolers, and this would blow their minds. Really cool idea, guys. Pleas keep at it and give us a Kickstarter. I'm in. Really love the synth 80s vibe for music. Cheese is good, but there's a line when it might become too jokey and annoying. I would look at the 1983 Dragon's Lair video game for inspirational sound effects and the Stranger Things retro synth for musical interludes, intros, and endings. Lastly, the iconic voice from 1980 Williams Black Knight Pinball would be just perfect for Zargon. "Will... you... challenge... the.. black... knight." That game actually laughed at you when you lost a ball and it was both infuriating and addictive. Just my two coppers.

      That’s great feedback! The sounds are all replaceable. One of the mods we’ll have is 3 sound fx per action. That’ll allow us to randomize one of 3 sounds when triggered!

    So a few thoughts. (not intended to poo poo the effort or be negative in any way) I love what you have done, and if I had young kids who would be wowed by the effects, I could see its appeal. But I do not really run Hero Quest so I can't really speak to its practicality. I would think a more useful or desired product would have it where the figures had the connection to the room so that when a player goes into a room with his figure it would respond to him with door opening sounds etc. Also I would put the LEDs in the rooms where the lightup effects could signify what is going on in that room rather than just flashing around the side.
    If this sort of thing could be adapted and expanded for other games, I could see a higher demand for it. Don't get me wrong, I think it is very cool. And I respect the work and design process that went into it. I am jest not sure of the practicality it has for sale value. I could be very wrong. I do not know how popular Hero Quest is so if there is a larger audience out there than I am aware of, this might do very well. But when you think about it, what you are putting together here is just a light and sound box that could be made more central, less expansive, and therefore cheaper to make, for an audience that would really likely use it for a limited time.
    another game that comes to mind that MIGHT benefit from this sort of thing is Talisman. But again, I am not sure how many folks would spend cash on something just for lights and sounds vs the price point you would have to market it at in order to make it worth your while.
    Either way, I am going to be following this because, well damn, it is just cool.

    • @TerrainTronics

      Hia Jack. There's a lot to unpack there! :)
      Room by room electronics and effects are possible, but they kick up the complexity of setup for the end user significantly. One of our goals was to make setup for non-electronics folks as quick and easy as possible. Open the tomb, put in the HQ playfield, distribute cards as you normally would, and get playing. Total setup, less than 5 minutes.
      The kind of stuff you're talking about would be better suited for a D&D type game. I run many other video's on this channel for adding LED's and more to various Scatter terrain and other big-scene terrain for D&D and other, more complex systems.
      HQ was chosen because the playfield size is fixed, the actions a player can do is constrained (therefor limiting the required effects etc) and there's still quite a community for the game (given the re-release in 2021).
      We're already looking at porting the system to other game systems with fixed board sizes. Some of the newer GW games like Killteam play on a fixed 30" x 22" board, but again, we need to look at the actions available to a player, and what they'll really want to do.
      Thanks for the feedback. Very valuable.
      D
