    This 105-year-old player piano is in dire need of an overhaul if it's ever going to be anything more than just a shelving unit.
    I often feel like I'm operating inside a vacuum in my little piano shop. It's time to change that.
    Music: QRS Music Roll 5573 I've Got The World on a String, Played-Rite Music Roll 566-A Magnetic Rag, QRS Story Roll The Jolly Blacksmiths, Cable Company Music Roll 975 Moonlight Sail to the Isle of Love, QRS Word Roll 10-136 Somethin' Stupid

    It takes 7 or 8 hours--yowzer! The sheer repetition is mind-boggling to me, and I'm glad you enjoy the process. So satisfying to see the end result and know that's your work in there. I think I could restring a ukulele maybe. But only with Steve's help.

      Funny! Yes, it's mind-numbing work, but so rewarding once it's done. This is the 5th one we've tackled this year.

      🤗 hehehe 🤗 … “restring Ukulele..”. 🤗
      But I feel similar 🤗🙏🏽 … restringing a piano seems so daunting to me as well 🙏🏽🤗🙏🏽

    Beautiful. I don't think I could have kept sane doing this; I actually shuttered when my mind comprehended how long this would take. Replacing one string is enough for me haha

      Sanity is out of the question for me! Regardless, the end result makes it all worth it.

      I'm glad you're enjoying it! This is the 5th piano Steve and I have restrung this year. I get a little better each time. Not much quicker though!

    Looking good!
    I recently restrung a similar piano with a friend; she did most of the work and I did Steve's job 😜
    So satisfying to behold when all the new wire is on!
    Good catch on Steve's part about the lettering 😁

    Just bidding on a Broadwood Pianola. I have always wanted one and decades ago reconditioned an old piano and learned to tune and temper it using beats. I hope I get it it will be a lovely project.

    How did they ‘ make’ the piano rolls? Is there a machine that can ‘ translate’ a note to a punch out on the roll? And how does it work for multiple simultaneous notes? Boggling, early computer memory!🎉🎉🎉

    I would be so scared to do this. Breaking a string would make me jump so bad I’d never finish.

      @@nateoutsidethevacuum I guess it isn’t the easiest thing to do on a new string, but older strings are prone to breaking due to age I assume.
      Anyways, I’m going to catch up on the series. You were recommended after watching DuoArt’s restringing video, maybe because I love old uprights, so I’m glad to have found it. Good luck on this and future projects!

      @nateoutsidethevacuum  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @roadchewer PE it seems like so many people are the "bust old uprights" type, but I'm definitely "old uprights or bust". Glad I'm not alone. Thanks for watching.

      I destrung a Bush & Lane piano back which had had almost every plate screw removed by a previous owner... with the strings still attached and up to tension!!! Only the bottom strip of plate screws were still in and were attached to the bottom wooden frame stretcher which was rotten and riddled with termites!!! It seems only the friction of the tuning pins in the pin holes in the plate was keeping this from flying apart. I was very scared by this back, since I considered it like a bomb which might explode... so realized that defusing the tension was key to rendering it safe given the lack of plate screws keeping the plate integral with the frame (NEVER EVER remove the plate screws before letting down all the string tension!!!). So I consulted with several expert technicians and read Mr Reblitz’s passage about letting down tension several times, and proceeded to let the tension down with the frame on its back, outdoors, with me with some good running shoes with one foot in position to run if it threatened to fold up! But by following his destringing schedule to a T, with my own modification (letting down each string an EIGHTH OF A TURN instead of the quarter turn recommended in the book), I was able to get to the finish line without problems and without injury, after which I labeled all the old strings with tape to take the gauges for restringing later, although this is a donor back which will be used to maybe bring another fine Bush & Lane back to life.

    What fantastic work!! I know this is late in the game but shouldn't you
    be wearing leather gloves to protect your hands??

    • @nateoutsidethevacuum
      @nateoutsidethevacuum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your concern. No, they greatly reduce dexterity and make the wire and tools impossible to manipulate.

    Learn not to touch the cooper wrapping on the bass strings. Your hands may leave the strings with a discoloration due to your sweat or oil on your hands and fingers.

      @@nateoutsidethevacuum I'm not trying to be snarky, just so you know. Most of the rags by Joplin had a tempo marking stating 'Do not play ragtime fast' For reference I recommend listening to the rags as played by Joshua Rifkin.

      Scott Joplin had his own opinion about his own music etc which is worth noting. However, there WERE some rags (vintage, and modern), designed to be played fast and so indicated in the score. Each tune dictates its own range of tempos.
