  • Today we are at the Castagnole Piemonte airfield to test and fly on the definitive version of the Dardo produced by the Piemontese Cfm-air whose first appearance to the public dates back to 2014, when it was presented at Aero in Friedrichshafen.
The specimen you see in this video is number 3 and at the time of publication of the video it is disembarking inside a container on American territory as it will be present at the Sun&Fun in Florida which will take place in mid-April this year... so if you are over there and you want to see it live to arrange a test, the opportunity for American friends is certainly more unique than rare!
CFM Air, founded in 2005 by Marco Martilla from Casella and Maurizio Cheli from Modena, (Astronaut and Eurofighter test pilot) is a company specialized in the design, production and testing of carbon fiber sports and tourist aircraft, as well as collaborating with Leonardo / Piaggio. The company takes care of all the production phases, starting with the creation of the molds to create the composite pieces and then assembling them once ready.
CFM Air is also able to carry out all the structural tests of aircraft with the appropriate structures which are certified in accordance with current aeronautical regulations and under the supervision of ENAC (National Civil Aviation Authority). Carbon fiber cell tests are performed up to a maximum load of +10G and -5G.
To begin describing the Il Dardo, let's do as the designers do... let's start from the passenger compartment... 130 cm wide by 102 cm high bubble cannopy two supercar style seats side by side which offer maximum comfort and are upholstered in very high quality leather and with the possibility of having the finishes according to the customers' wishes, as well as being completely adjustable electrically. Making a comparison with a best in class we have here a cabin 6 cm wider than a Cirrus SR22!
The plane, born from the experience acquired by the founding members, Maurizio Cheli and the designer Marco Martilla, is made almost exclusively in carbon fiber, with titanium parts for the flight controls, and equipped with digital avionics made up of two screens LCD Garmin G3X, Dynon or as in the Digital GRT example, with the possibility of installing additional instruments, autopilot, anti-collision system etc.
The large bubble roof opens towards the front and closes at the rear with excellent visibility for the occupants and can be released in flight if necessary.
The passenger compartment has an internal height of 102 cm, one of the highest in its category, giving ample freedom of movement to the occupants, flanked by excellent ventilation which allows for an optimal flow of recycling in the cabin.
The low tapered wing, with a highly elongated shape, has a two-spar structure, equipped with flaps and ailerons designed to have an excellent roll speed. In this latest version of the Dardo some small changes have been made compared to the previous models, including a new larger ventral rear fin, and the depth rudder has a more pronounced arrow in order to minimize the effects of yaw and have a excellent lateral directional behavior with minimizing screw entry.
The trolley is of the retractable tricycle type machined from solid with electro-hydraulic controls, and air/oil shock absorber to ensure maximum efficiency even in semi-prepared fields.
