The best thing about this movie is the fact that it means 'The Spy Who Loved Me' is next - which is the BEST Bond ever.

Christopher Lee and the car flip were the only redeeming features of this movie.

I have a really soft spot (possibly unwarranted) for this one.
I like the way that the focus of the movie is in the villain, rather than Bond (and Lee is just superb,so it makes sense).
    The intrigue is interesting and a little different for a Bond movie (e.g. Andrea being the one who sent Bond the bullet,and therefore engineering much of the sequence of events);
the locations are ravishing; and the dinner scene between Scaramanga and Bond is fascinating in it's implications - that Scaramanga is not only Bonds darker side, but a person if greater skill ("I only need one")
Overall, although slower moving than most Bonds, I feel it's a little underrated.
(I have similar sentiments toward Flemings novel - but for different reasons)

I think some people fail at the humor JW Pepper brings. Even he has racist remarks, the point is that you laugh at him Because of his remarks. Nothing he says and does gets through to any fruition so it’s funny how he’s screaming things all the time. It’s not meant to upset anyone. Don’t take it so 2023 seriously. It’s 1974…the world was more fun than it is today

Exactly. All these pathetic people making sure to add how 'disgusting' JW Peppers racist remarks are....all done for the benefit of whoever may be reading to make themselves look righteous.

I am one of the Bond fanatics who loves J.W. Pepper, I always found him hilarious. All these modern reactors take him way too seriously.

I see you agree- Like I mentioned last time, this one is one of my favorites... JUST because of Christopher Lee alone! He's a great villian... regardless of the rest of the story. And also MAUD ADAMS (for the first time)!

The the scene with the two nieces the one on the right is the land lady from "Kung Fu Hustle" by Stephen Chow well worth a watch when you want a laugh.

You really need to se Lee in Dracula! Ian Fleming created that other flying car, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Lee and Moore were great friends who shared their first (non speaking) screen appearance as 'stage door Johnnies' in 'Trottie True' from 1949. Clifton James played JW Pepper. He was in reality a decorated war hero in WW2.

The TV show Top Gear did a special on James Bond cars in 2012. The clip they showed of the famous car stunt didnt include the slide whistle sound effect

Herve Villiache (I don't know if that's how his name is spelled) plays Nick Nack. On Fantasy Island he played Tattoo.

I love your james bond reactions ;)
I just wanted to remind you that you should react to "never say never again" (1983) between octopussy and a view to a kill. It is a james bond film not made by EON with Sean Connery BACK AS JAMES BOND !
And come on, you can't say no to another james bond with sean connery :)
It was released the same year as octopussy with roger moore but only few months after

It's funny how you both have skipped the most exciting part of the movie, when bond was in belly dancer's room retrieving the golden bullet. Lol

Fun fact, James Bond is named directly after an ornithologist that Ian Flemming knew about

Scaramanga kills the best known assassins in the world. He wants to be the only one. In the book he's in Jamaica. He kills kestrels that are just perched on the roof, just like Chigurh shoots the bird on the bridge.
That's the famous James Bond island in Thailand.

That is EXACTLY what I said about that car stunt. Adding the dumb slide whistle sound to it. There’s so many things I love about this movie (Sir Christopher Lee of course is one of them) but there’s a few things that could be different, like that noise and the stupid racist sherif.

WWII veteran, Count Dracula, hand-picked by Tolkien himself, Bond villain and Heavy Metal singer!
you don't need a golden gun when you have Sir Christopher Lee! 👏👏👏

You know, in one of the book they're talking about Scaramanga's third nipple and gayness in general and say, one of the traits of being gay is not being able to whistle.
So after everyone leaves the room, M whistles a clear note and goes bah.

One of my least favourite Bond films despite good old Sir Rog, Sir Christopher Lee being awesome and one of the greatest car stunts in movie history (albeit partly ruined by the whistle). Thankfully the next one is one of the very best Bonds.

This is widely considered one of the worst Bond movies. It has gotten a bit more love from the fan community lately, but that's still pretty much the consensus and I agree. It's in my bottom 3.
There are still elements I like. Christopher Lee is clearly iconic and great in the role and Nick Nack as his henchman is fun. The whole subplot with Andrea Anders also works well, aside from Bond being a complete dickhead there...that's something that bothers me in general with this particular movie. Bond is more of an asshole than usual here and it kind of makes me want to root for Scaramanga, haha.
The action sadly also just is very meh for most of it. The car chase has some fine stunts, including the great one at the end. John Barry, the composer of many Bond movies, decided to put that slide whistle sound effect in and he later said it was his biggest regret. Understandable.
In any case, I never thought that action was Guy Hamilton's (Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die and this movie) strong suit. He just isn't very dynamic with his shots a lot of the time and it's edited competently, but in a very bland way.
I also agree that they needed to do more with Bond and Scaramanga being rivals of a sort and the final duel. Imo they should have just scratched the entire solex subplot and kept the focus on these two.
The next Bond movie is one of the all time greats, though. It arguably saved Bond in the 70s, since the box office for TMWTGG was disappointing and after one of the main producers had to leave, they needed a big success. Thankfully they got it.

It's such a shame that one of the best Bond villans (Crristopher Lee), one of the best Bond girls (Maud Adams) and one of the best stunts in a Bond film (the car flip) were all in one of the worst Bond films, with the worst Bond girl (Britt Ekland) and easily the worst Bond theme song (sung by Lulu).
