  • Is Costco worth the emotional and time effort these days?! Come with me to the Costco of London UK to see what Christmas goods we can find and see if they are good value. This was filmed at the Wembley Costco in north London Nov 2023. Do you have a membership, is it worth it? What are your must have items?

As an American, I was shocked at how uncrowded that Costco store was. Every Costco in the US that I have shopped at is always packed - doesn’t matter the day or time. Kirkland is their store brand and it’s usually quite good and nearly equivalent to main brands. The UK Costco does have some items I wish we had over here. I found it interesting that you are able to buy a single loaf of bread, where as in the US, you must buy bread in packs of 2 at Costco. Everything is big, but as an American store, it fits with the larger houses over here.

As a Brit, I'm also amazed at how quiet the London store is. I live 100 miles away in Birmingham, and the local Costco is ALWAYS heaving to the point that I can't shop there most of the time. We also queue along the highway to get into the fuel station.
I have the impression that Costco in the US also looks very quiet when I see vlogs from there.

In the States, Costco’s prices are ALWAYS lower than anywhere else (outside of crazy sales)… but one of the best things about Costco is that companies often package items specifically for Costco with extras that would be add ons anywhere else. We buy sheet sets there that are AMAZING. I’ve never seen them anywhere else.

I rarely see anything at Costco (in the US) that you can do a head-to-head price comparison. Of course many things are sold under the Kirkland label, but even the major-brand items always seem to be “unique” in some way, so no taking a model number and comparing.

  • @harlanchinn8121

Glad you were able to visit your local Costco. Their corporate headquarters are just a few miles away from home. The Kirkland brand is named after the city of Kirkland across the lake from Seattle. The prices can be very competitive. LEGO at Costco is usually a good deal. The return policy is the best of any retailer. Look for items that are unique to that store’s region. Prices followed by an Asterisk is a one-time only Close-out item. Such a fun vlog of your first visit!!

Costco is an American gift to the world. Costco has an excellent reputation for being good to their employees, proving you can be an exemplary employer and still make a profit. I have never shopped at a Costco outside the US and this location in the UK is almost identical to the stores here in Colorado but I was mystified by the ‘qualifications’ for membership. I pay USD60 for a one-year membership and, Bob’s your uncle, I was in the door. No questions asked. I live alone so many of the massive sizes of food products make some items unreasonable but, my god, the booze is very reasonably priced and of excellent quality. Of particular mention is the Kirkland-brand Champagnes. Yes, bottled in France, it’s excellent for mimosas, a Kir Royale or an impromptu French 75. No bags at checkout but the staff are always ready with leftover cardboard boxes. Lastly, our Costco locations are infamous for the ubiquitous and plentiful free-food samples enticing members to buy that 50lb bag of pretzels. In fact, one of my friends, who is seriously rich, loves going to Costco on a Saturday morning just to try all the free stuff offered in nearly every aisle. 🤷‍♂️

I'm an American with a Costco membership. I agree with you - the food is amazing. It makes meal prep for the week pretty easy. If you look at the proce cards, you'll notice stars on some of the items. The stars indicate that the item is going away after they sell out. Some popular items come back with different packaging or other minor changes.

Hannah, in America, you arrive early, very early or late in the day. Shopping there can be a one stop shop - for most household items. In the US, you can purchase tires and have them serviced there while you ship, purchase gas for your car, buy a car, appliances, flooring and much more through Costco. Prices are competitive especially when you own your own business. Worth buying big so you do not have to visit a gorcery store multiple times a week. No brainer!

My husband and I shop at Costco in the U.S. it's great for buying basics like toilet paper and paper towels. The thing is, you need the space to store it all. Also here in the U.S. a lot of us have an extra giant freezer in the garage. I lived in the U.K. in the 90's and some of my neighbor's had smaller refrigerators. As long as ypu have the space to store the big packs Costco is great for certain items.

The items I buy are canned drinks, tinned tomatoes, large container of Geeta mango chutney, cat food pouches (about £5 cheaper than supermarket), bin bags, meat and fish.
The individual Victoria sponge cakes are really nice, & the sandwich platters and sandwiches are also nice.
You do after a while of going to Costco get a feel for what is a good deal, and what isn’t.

Another wonderful video, Hannah! Have been a Costco US member for a long time. You definitely have to shop it…there are very good deals and then some that aren’t a deal at all. The membership rules sound a little different from the US, but otherwise it seems to be very much the same. You’re a brave soul for venturing in at this time of year (I went recently and it was absolutely bonkers). I go for certain things and ignore the rest of it (I go early and try to get in and out as quickly as possible). I view it as a necessary “evil”. Fun fact: Costco originated as a Price Club membership warehouse in San Diego, California way back in 1970’s and eventually merged with Costco warehouse (established in Seattle in early 1980’s) from the previous business partners who all worked for original owner back in 1970’s. To date, it’s the largest and most successful warehouse retailer…perhaps worldwide.

I joined up in my neck of the woods, when they first opened, more decades ago than I care to remember. When I go I always seem to come across something I always wanted. Great buyers I guess. The house brand Kirkland is known for it's excellent unadulterated extra virgin olive oil. The organic produce, fresh and frozen, is a favourite. Very nice cheese department too. Trouble is it's getting more and more difficult, at times, to even enter their huge parking lot. Here's looking forward to seeing you again next week, old girl. Friday, 10 AM in my time zone. Love you Hannah! Love to see the difference in pricing and stock comparison! I'm Canadian, from Newfoundland and I've been to London and it never fails to shock me how cheap food and alcohol is compared to here in Canada! The costco cooked chicken here is $12.99 I beleive. The fresh raw chicken wings pack is $30! And we don't have alcohol here in anywhere but licensed "liquor" stores! And a 12 case of beer is $30! And a Smirnoff 750 ml vodka is around $25!

I love Costco! Here in Canada it’s the way to shop, specifically if you live in the prairies where we are separated from any big cities by hours of drive. Costco has incredible return policies and their gold jewlery selection and quality is incredible. You can buy chicken and diamond earrings all in one trip!

As a single person in America I don’t shop at Costco very often. Most things would spoil before I could eat them. Their gasoline seems good & is usually .30¢ cheaper per gallon. Their tire dept gives free installation which saves about $125. But it took forever to get an appointment. Overall though I don’t see renewing my membership

as an American, my personal tradition is to go to Costco the day before Thanksgiving to buy a pumpkin pie. It's so much fun and people seem to be in good moods. Last week, by 2pm, they had sold out of 1200 apple pies and didn't know how many pumpkin pies they had made $5.99!). On weekends, there are often taste tests of various foods that are on offer. The prices on the end caps can be hard to find but they are usually there somewhere.

I’ve had a Costco membership for over 20 years. I love Costco. I didn’t know there was one in London and I’m really excited to see the London store. I but staples from Costco - paper towels, toilet paper, cat and dog food, cat litter, dishwasher tabs, detergent. I also buy appliances from Costco. Costco has the best return policy of any store - except for electronics everything is returnable at any time, even a year later. Edit: If you buy any food and you don’t like it, return it -you can in the US, I assume you could at the London store. I don’t like their pastry but I buy their fresh fruit, wine.

As an American who goes to Costco at least once a week this was fascinating to watch. First off we dont have the job restrictions here, as a matter of fact out local Orlando Costco is ALWAYS packed. Also I cant get over how everything you are showing we have the same stuff here, I just wish we had the cases of London Pride:). This was a really great video!

There use to be restrictions. Same with a lot of other wholesalers, but I can't think of the last time I went to a wholesaler in either the US or Canada where they refused to allow me to buy a membership. Heck, a couple I've been to no longer even require memberships. I remember being really little in the late 80s/early 90s and having a giant list of stuff my parents would pick up for people that couldn't get memberships whenever we went shopping. It sucked.

When Costco first opened her in Oregon in the 1980’s you have to own a business or work at only certain places to get a card. We had a family business which allowed us membership but not all privileges. I still have my original card under our business name. About 10-15 years ago they issued new cards in individual family names. But it did not as a place where you had to meet 😊.

Hannah, as always, your a good steward of the London shopping experience. I must say, and I know I've said it before, your London Costco puts mine to shame here in South Florida. I'm almost ready to say something to management, but I know it would be a waste of my energy. Anyway, you always brighten my day. Keep up the good work. We'll see you Tuesday. :) P.S. Really enjoyed your review of Costco! You were great, and earned my sub. I'm from the states, so grew up shopping in Costco (California) -- Love how Costco rotates new items in regularly so it's never dull. Especially seasonally. Our family buys food there on a monthly basis. We save money as food is sold in bulk. We eat some, and can put some away in our pantry - or build up our food storage. Costco is the bomb.

Happy Friday, Hannah! I have to say that your stress made me laugh. Not in a nasty way, but as a Brit living in Canada, I remember well the overwhelm of North American Costco. You gradually get used to it, though, as I’m sure you will, too. The Americanization of Britain is happening and is real! By the way, anything that is Kirkland brand is Costco’s own brand, and the quality is top-notch. I hope you got to relax for the rest of the day 😂❤

Someone did the breakdown on costs at Costco vs the regular retailer. Tne cost savings was $1.14 per purchase. The USA membership would require 53 visits to break even on cost of the membership. Costco benefits those who buy large quantities. Also, the membership accounts for 72% of the companies profits.
I shop at Costco twice a week. Located in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Avoid the long lines by going to Costco when it opens.

As an American I do enjoy Costco! we're a household of 2 and that is where we go for most of our shopping outside of fresh produce. it's just as packed and the people are just as aggressive as the grocery stores and/or Target. People are super aggressive out in public nowadays for some reason in America, I wish ours was as empty as yours! Waiting through the line at the end sucks but at least here they have a system down pact to shuffle everyone through very quickly. it's not a pretty or aesthetic experience but it for sure beats paying a premium for smaller-sized everyday items. If you live on your own though may not be worth it, things are just too large and I wouldn't get through it all before it expires.

Hello Hannah, I loved this video so much that I have now watched it twice! As an American, I can't get over the reasonable price of food there, but the VAT of 20% on other items is double or more of what I would pay in my area. The look on your face when you start the wrap-up in your car is priceless! Shopping is so exhausting, isn't it? This was your first time, you will get used to it. Some of the sales are amazing! I am getting a membership for my youngest daughter and her family for Christmas. I think I'd like the Costco Monopoly game. Did you check out the gas/petrol prices? Remember to eat something and have a big cup of coffee before you go next time! LOL!!! Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS! 🎄

Most UK shops (Physical or online) don't show VAT separately, it's all included so we never have to add Sales Tax to the marked price, however as Costco is aimed at businesses who may be able to claim the VAT back, it's shown separately.

I’m in Australia- we had a membership card when it first opened my way, was $60 AUD per year. We went a few times but just bought food, mostly junk. We haven’t shopped there in years and I can’t see me going back. I thought it was a waste of money and so much processed food. My sister-in-law loves it though, and does her bulk groceries there.

I'm only half way through this one and it's like a coming of age story watching you discover the world of Costco. As others from the US have noted, the differences are pretty evident, but the overall idea of "coming in for the basics and then wandering around to find stuff you didn't know you wanted" is the same in every part of the world they have stores. (Those massive carts come in handy more frequently than you'd expect, if you thought you'd only come in for a few things). There is a logic to their pricing scheme, too - Standard pricing ends in .x9, an asterisk means it's limited, sale items ends in .00 or .x7. Their pies are excellent, if you decide to give a pumpkin pie a try, it's a solid entry point for your first time. That said, I am so glad you picked up the street taco kit! It's one of my absolute favorites. It's sooo good and there's so much of it.
And yes, Kirkland is actually a very good private label, they do a good job of matching and sometimes exceeding the main Brand quality (except for batteries! Do not buy their batteries, for some reason they just never hold a charge and enough people I know have also been frustrated with them).
