Yes. We are planning to have a clear gun and a flake gun going at the same time. It was shooting about 30 PSI. Since Scott doesn't have a regulator, I couldn't get it any lower. We'll have to spray around 10-15 PSI I bet.
Get a big tip siphon feed gun 2.2 tip put in clear and flake stir add some clean and degreased large ball bearings and spray like your painting . The ball bearings help keep the flake suspended in the clear coat .I did my vette it was a tons of work in blue and diamond metal flake . Let it dry then put on clear to bury the flake wet sanded more clear wet sanded more clear till flake was totally buried then colour sanded and 2 light coats of clear then waited 2 weeks and compounded mostly by hand till it was smooth as glass then applied 2 coats carnauba wax . I used old school acrylic lacquer and not 2 stage paint as I almost died from foam consumer grade expanding insulation canned foam purchased at a box building store which all contain methyl di isocyanate or MDI, 2 stage paint have in most cases methyl di isocyanate in the hardener and a dual cartridge filter won’t stop it you need full face mask and separate air supply and full suit , nitrile gloves . Once you get poisoned you can’t go near the stuff ,each exposure put you closer to a limit you will react to it just a question of how much . Even getting it on your skin or mist over spray in your eyes add to the exposure. Each exposure add to you life time limit ,isocyanate is in many construction glues ( the stuff that you can’t get of your hands )upholstery foams ,sanding clear coats and paints ,expanding foam insulation, cause exposure
That's what got me started down this path. I was looking at the flake buster and these other guns showed up. Rattlecan flake sounds pretty interesting.
Yup, made mine and used to to spray flake on my motorcycle tank and fenders. Worked great. Found a bottle to fit and the bottom, played with the pressure and away I went.
Yes, the PSI was WAY too high. I had a gun regulator, but the incoming air was too high and I couldn't get it below 30 PSI. We need to figure out how to slow it WAY down. I have a couple ideas.
Hey I just want to give you guys a big Thanks for your video. After watching your video I grabbed an old siphon feed paint gun I had. Found some baby food jars my girlfriend had and went to the hardware store. 2 hours later I had a fully functioning metal flake gun that cost me only $13.50 to make (cuz I can't remember when I bought it or how much I paid for the paint gun. ;). And it works awesome.
Props to you man!!!! I've seen it done a bunch of different ways. Hell, you can do flake with a salt shaker (and some guys do). I'm glad we triggered something to get you moving on your way toward making the world just a bit more sparkley
I just flaked a sportster tank my garage my house and me still has flake on them back to the point of this. I was thinking on the same line as you check out the mini flake buster set up you can shoot it out dry and wet but they want $120.00 for them your set up works great but you want to be able to shoot the clear to. It will still work though
Will bass boat size fit through that 2.2? Our first thought was to use a conventional gun, but I didn't think the big flake would fit through it. I'd MUCH rather use a spray gun with clear. Like you said, I think it will be a lot less mess.
Maybe something like a kerosene gun (Used for cleaning engines ect) They have a adjustable fan tip..May be able to modify it to at least get a even distribution of large flake/clear..
this really works but is extremely inefficient... just to paint a bike's tank i needed over 100g of flakes while with flake buster i used that much for half the bike
So do you think in you were to turn a new nozzle from what that looks like at 3/8 to 1/4 inch it would help along with the air pressure. I know flake is messy but I want bass boat and my 1.8 tip will barely handle medium
3-4 PSI. I may need a better regulator at my gun to get that low. The whole time we were farting around with the flake we were talking about what Thomy Shuu would do in this situation.
Ya sense your doing a car that will be great I'm doing motorcycle tanks much smaller I want to try out the airbrush one more control tommy shue has one . I asked what he thought but he said he did not use it yet $120.00 is a lot to spend if you don't know if you like it I'm going to try to make one!!
I think that went well! I'd have to think it will work like a charm. Great catch on that gun, I love that ingenuity! I hate it when some companies use or modify a cheapo gun and then charge an arm and a leg for it. Reminds me of the crap I've seen with MARINE rated parts, that are exactly the same as automotive parts, but are OMG more expensive. I swear that if you get that dialed in right with a nice jug of flake it's going to be badass! "Lady Gaga threw up" LOL Great vid, you guys are funny!
WOW! what a loss of flake!!!! That is not the way to spray flake. You have more on the ground then on the fender, LOL. Junk your flake gun and do it the right way.
Not sure what you mean by this. If you read the video description, it's a proof of concept. Does it need to be refined? Yep. This is how ideas start with creative people... Pretty rough. With a low pressure regulator and shorter extractor, you have a tool that anyone can make that will do a great job shooting flake. To see the potential, you have to think beyond the tip of your nose.
Greg's Garage Hey dear friend you are so angry on me! I was not meaning that really. I am totally new to body repair and paining job but doing some other jobs with automotive. You may visit once my channel. Your channel is awesome and I hope I would learn a lot from you. Please don't take my comments personally and don't be angry. You seem good when happy! Regards,
Yeah dude... You used the word ugly to describe the idea... I just wanted to be sure you understood this was just a concept and not a final solution to metal flake a car. I'm not upset or angry. Frankly, I do this stuff for fun, so whether people like or dislike doesn't bother me. I want to be sure folks learn and understand what is going on. That's what I'm after. I hope you continue to enjoy the channel, and I hope you didn't mistake my tone for angry. DLYML!!! :D
Greg's Garage No my dear friend it good that every thing is clear and there is no confusion. You are happy and not angry nor sad, is very nice and seems very good to me. Sure we would learn and enjoy each other videos and this is the easiest way to learn for free without putting self in big effort. Regards,
bassboat is .025...it is HARD 2 shot with a spray gun....the upol gun will work with bassboat flake...i turn my flake buster down to 3 to 4 pounds then clear the hell out of it PEEEACE
:D. I traveled for work all summer and wasn't home to make anything in the garage... Then I promptly had 2 eye surgeries to ruin the fall months. I'm still in recovery mode for the next week or two (sorta)... I do have some video from the summer that shows the project I worked on in Boston. I'm editing it up now. I'll be back to regular videos after January... I think!
I almost used an old siphon blaster gun, but saw that ad on ebay and thought... I've seen that gun before. Others have written me comments saying they've used this type of gun with success at single digit PSI. We are going to flake the 59 t-bird at some point, just not sure when. I've also heard of using a salt/pepper shaker. It's just time, so why not???
That was awesome. People will see all that flake on you and think you boys have been to a strip club. Search amazon for metal flake paint gun 2.5 and you can get a nice 20oz cup gun that will spray flake perfectly, just mix it into your clear. Less wasted flake that way.
this method looks very wasteful. there was more flake on the floor than on the work. i found a very efficient way of applying flake using the same technique as gold leaf gilding. i paint on the pva glue watered down and then dust the flake on using the camel brush i use for gold leaf. very little is wasted and what doesnt stick i can re use as it falls onto a sheet of paper below the work instead of all over the workshop
+rockymontana1 Yep. Same general design as a Schutz (I don't know if I spelled that right) gun. Bedliners, undercoating, rock guard, trunk liner... Seen them all done with one of these.
God dont need a dam bro last I heard he could walk on water just saying lol but that's slick I heard u say raptor bedliner liner so do u got any idea weather u believe I could shoot color shifting paints or something with some perilla in the base coat I wonder weather or not that it would hold it or not fr because I am about to shoot my ride soon fr so I need 2 have everything worked put before I attempt anything better safe than sorry and regretting ever spraying it because idk how many times u can change the tintable times never thought to ask either fr buy some body's product because not everyone doesn't always have some or any way for that matter i was just curious because like I said I've got a full full kit custom raptor bedliner guy should allow me to adjust the pressure as well u have gotta ur install reading adjuaablr sĺmnthstsý clenì
haha you guys are cornball, but even with everything just adlib and throw some flake down, I can see at least the gun works and the flake is cool even you didnt regulate anything!
crazy shit..... Be sure to check out Lil Daddy Roth "ROTH FLAKE web site...... guns, flake of all sizes, Rattle can flake too!.....this is the same guy im making the Scoop mold for (the one Tommy Schuuu just painted for me)
Yes. We are planning to have a clear gun and a flake gun going at the same time. It was shooting about 30 PSI. Since Scott doesn't have a regulator, I couldn't get it any lower. We'll have to spray around 10-15 PSI I bet.

Sweet man. Scott and I were just talking about this again tonight.
Yes, the PSI was WAY too high. I had a gun regulator, but the incoming air was too high and I couldn't get it below 30 PSI. We need to figure out how to slow it WAY down. I have a couple ideas.

you can spray flake from a normal high volume air gun ( with a regulator ) with a 2.2 size tip for big flakes like whats on a bass boat
***** Check this dude out. Bass boat might be tough, but you can generally get large flake through a gun... th-cam.com/users/Carlsonhotrods
That worked pretty good. That method would trash my spray booth. I would be getting pieces of flake in paint jobs for weeks LOL.
When ever I shot flake. When I got home. The old lady would accuse me of going to a tattie bar. LOL
Lol
Love the look of flake, hate the mess. Your going to need 200 pounds of flake using that cannon. Nice.
I just flaked a sportster tank my garage my house and me still has flake on them back to the point of this. I was thinking on the same line as you check out the mini flake buster set up you can shoot it out dry and wet but they want $120.00 for them your set up works great but you want to be able to shoot the clear to. I think there are a number of folks thinking the same thing! That was a well spent $15.
I wanna crack open a beer and hang out in your garage! You guys had so much fun doing this! Awesome.
Yeah... Hanging with Unkie Scott is always a trip. Hopefully we will flake out his t-bird soon. That will be a blast.
the thirst is so real XD
This was awesome. Greg, you will love an upcoming video I have after this one.
I'll look forward to it.
Thank the good man upstairs, we'll be trashing Unkie Scotts garage and not mine!
Yeah, I didn't know what to expect... Looks like we may have a winner once we get it dialed in.
"SOLID GOLD!"
You are a good detective. A little Friday night fun.
Will bass boat size fit through that 2.2? Our first thought was to use a conventional gun, but I didn't think the big flake would fit through it. I'd MUCH rather use a spray gun with clear. Like you said, I think it will be a lot less mess.
Man, I was looking at those other purpose made guns last night and was going to ask in my next video if that Raptor gun worked. Awesome!
This is SO needing a masked flame job for the gold flake on those trailer fenders.
I have glitter in every crevice of my body. It needs to be run at LOW pressure.
Works better if you just put it in a clear basecoat carrier!
What kind (name) of clear coat carrier is best?
If you do the car that way ,The whole neighborhood will be gold, Like it snowed gold. lol.
That is too dang cool!!! Screw gold leaf
So do you think in you were to turn a new nozzle from what that looks like at 3/8 to 1/4 inch it would help along with the air pressure. I know flake is messy but I want bass boat and my 1.8 tip will barely handle medium
Low low pressure is a must. Nozzle will make a difference for sure. 1.8 tip will clog like crazy with bass boat.
Rhonda Rhinestone. Scotty will be Goldie Gultch.
I agree, just worried about the bass boat flake getting caught up in the tip.
solid gold with danny terrio then next was dionne warwick man showing my age i think its gonna work fine
Thanks man bought one worked well
lol..That looked like fun...But as others have suggested may be better mixing it with a clear..
HAHA!!!! It's all good! I know Pete well. I designed a T-shirt for him a few years ago! He's a great guy.
3-4 PSI. I may need a better regulator at my gun to get that low. The whole time we were farting around with the flake we were talking about what Thomy Shuu would do in this situation.
Any updates on a fanning spread nozzle?
I LOL'd so hard at 52sec when he said "... if you look on the orifice on this guy is HUGE ..." What the heck?
:) Paint guys are always checking the size of their orifice
Ya sense your doing a car that will be great I'm doing motorcycle tanks much smaller I want to try out the airbrush one more control tommy shue has one . I asked what he thought but he said he did not use it yet $120.00 is a lot to spend if you don't know if you like it I'm going to try to make one!!
We have to figure out a way to use as little amount of flake and make it stick as you noticed!!
Should be a fun experiment.
All that glitters is good!
Did you mix your flake and clear and shoot out of a paint gun?
Thanks Aric!
15.00 for the gun and 90.00 for the flake wasted...lol
You sure have the Midas touch buddy. :-)
Thanks Cecil!
I wanted to break out the 1/4" tape and get to work. Hopefully we'll get that going on the 59 this fall.
Thanks man! You are right, some dialing in and it will be sweet.
Great idea! Flaked out grill!
Getting there.
HAHA!!! I said the same thing. I showered quickly so I wouldn't have to scare everyone with my pole dancing routine.
WOW! what a loss of flake!!!! That is not the way to spray flake. You have more on the ground then on the fender, LOL. Junk your flake gun and do it the right way.
YES!!! It will look like OZ! Fitting for Kansas I suppose!
HAHA!!! I knew that would bring back a few memories for folks... Ahh the days BEFORE Mtv.
with those sparkly slippers you are fabulous!!!
Great idea as always Kevin. I need to think multiple revenue streams. That approach would a cost into an income.
What the hek...never would.have known now theres proof!!!
So now that you're all glittered up.... what's your stage name gonna be?
Solid Gold
This was something very nice!
Not sure what you mean by this. If you read the video description, it's a proof of concept. Does it need to be refined? Yep. This is how ideas start with creative people... Pretty rough. drop the air pressure a bunch!
HAHA!! Yeah, there was gold flake EVERYWHERE!
HAHA!!! You know your 80's TV!!! :D
Pretty wild
Yeah, just an odd coincidence. That thing can SLING SOME FLAKE!
Dude.. you need to sand that baby first.. :)
Seems like it just might work.
Oh yeah!
Thanks!
Yeah. Can't wait to spray it for real.
Sorry dude. I hope you don't have cable, you'd probably need to have a transfusion.
stripper glitter, wonder how a sandblasting gun would work, l have my vw trike shell to do,
I almost used an old siphon blaster gun, but saw that ad on ebay and thought... I've seen that gun before. Probably would work nicely if lower the pressure.
YES!
It's all about Guiness and Having Fun. I'd be spraying the hell out of everything for shits and Giggles.
SOLID GOAULD!!!!
easier to buy the right gun to do a good job. flake king $149
haha that sprayed out a ton of flake. Are your toenails still glittering? LoL
Oh yeah. I let that one slip!
Thumbs up.

Men! you all mabe are not be a good painters, but you are fanniest hell
LOL!!! You nailed it.
Memory lapse / Guinness / Giggles
works for me ,, kool
Don't let the meat loafff

I've heard of guys using a salt shaker (or something similar. The pressure was WAY too high, I could see running at about 2 psi. It's def a messy job.
That thing lOOks like an undercoating gun
+rockymontana1 Yep. Same general design as a Schutz (I don't know if I spelled that right) gun. Bedliners, undercoating, rock guard, trunk liner... Seen them all done with one of these.
Greg's Garage I have a plastic tank hand held sandblaster the could probably do the same thing as a flake gun,(dry) and it's real cheap too.....
Solid gold lol
Sssssparkles! It was gay pride this week too :D look up my friend Pete in my list and he shows DIY auto body.

Jim Cash. Working with Unkie Scott is always a trip. Sometimes, you can have a little fun whilst you experiment!
ooh you look so pretty LOL, Mmmm Guiness, looks like a fun project to try,
