How to Install Raspberri Pi camera and Troubleshoot errors | Upgrade Bios Firmware on Raspberry Pi

- This video is step by step detailed tutorial on how to correctly install raspberry pi Camera on Raspberry Pi 4 8 GB.
The webcam camera module can be adapted to the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+/3/2/B+ to provide you with high-quality playback images.
The camera template uses Omni Vision OV5647 QSXGA (5 megapixel) CMOS color sensor with a maximum of 2592 * 1944 pixels, which provides clear images.
The webcam's camera module supports up to 90fps video in VGA and 30fps 1080p video when using the H.264 (AVC) codec.
This video also sescribes on how to troubleshoot the errors that you get while installing the camera like
Commands not found
ERROR: the system appears to be configured for the legacy camera stack
Additionally this tutorial will also guide on how to upgrade the firmware or BIOS on the raspberry Pi Module.
libcamera is a new software library aimed at supporting complex camera systems directly from the Linux operating system. In the case of the Raspberry Pi it enables us to drive the camera system directly from open source code running on ARM processors. The proprietary code running on the Broadcom GPU, and to which users have no access at all, is almost completely by-passed.
libcamera presents a C++ API to applications and works at the level of configuring the camera and then allowing an application to request image frames. These image buffers reside in system memory and can be passed directly to still image encoders (such as JPEG) or to video encoders (such as h.264), though such ancillary functions as encoding images or displaying them are strictly beyond the purview of libcamera itself.
For this reason Raspberry Pi supplies a small set of example libcamera-apps. These are simple applications, built on top of libcamera, and are designed largely to emulate the function of the legacy stack built on Broadcom’s propretary GPU code (some users will recognise these legacy applications as raspstill and raspivid). The applications we provide are:
libcamera-hello A simple "hello world" application which starts a camera preview stream and displays it on the screen.
libcamera-jpeg A simple application to run a preview window and then capture high resolution still images.
libcamera-still A more complex still image capture application which emulates more of the features of raspistill.
libcamera-vid A video capture application.
libcamera-raw A basic application for capturing raw (unprocessed Bayer) frames directly from the sensor.
libcamera-detect This application is not built by default, but users can build it if they have TensorFlow Lite installed on their Raspberry Pi. It captures JPEG images when certain objects are detected.

I'm having an issue. I enabled the legacy Camera in Rasp-Config, rebooted, and when I went to do raspistill, it gave me a list of directions and not what was displayed in this video. When I tried Libcamera, it did not run.
I've followed the tutorial, I have the camera plugged into the correct port the correct way. I'm running Raspberry Pi 64 on a Raspberry Pi 4
I've updated the firmware and updated the Pi. The camera is an Arducam 16mp. The Pi has a fresh load of the OS installed.
the only tutorial that helped me, thank you!

Thank you for the video. When i open my configuration screen the option to activate camera isn't on the list. Can you please help me figure out what to do? I think the board or module might be issue but I'm not sure. Thank you.
I can take videos and pictures with my camera. When I open "jitsi meet" in the browser, the "Chromium" browser does not recognize my camera. What can I do?
Great video and good documentation. Now I want to control taking a video, is there a limit to how much it records. Basically, I'd like to duplicate what a RING camera does. And I'd like to know how to create a script so I can take a photo or video with one click, setting video for 20 seconds.
Hi. I've made a program that needs to detect faces to work. I have the ribbon cable IR camera and it works fine with the commands and I've activated it in the settings. But my program just won't work with the raspberry pi camera, only a webcam I plug in via USB
If you create those program with help of internet code they normally are designed to work with usb based devices , please lookup for a part where you can select the source , for rspi i have given you commands to capture the image from rspi camera which you can process to detect objects. I hope this helps. Please stay tuned to my channel for my future videos

There could be 4 issues, that i can think of
1. Camera cable installed in wrong direction

Hi, I did a fresh installation of the 64 bit OS and followed all of your steps.
I'm using PI3 Model B+.
It did not work for me because after typing sudo libcamera-hello, it didnt show the camera feed.
the terminal says: "libEGL warning: failed to authenticate" and gives me some INFO and WARN but also the ERROR: "Camera sensor does not support test pattern modes"
last line is "what(): failed to import fd 20"
The camera is working on 32 bit but I need 64 bit OS compatibility.
Can you help me with the issue?
Thank you
Did you try the old commands that i mentioned in the video and see if it works. Verify if your config file is accordingly modified for it to work. Also please share the camera module version so that i help you better.
@@AstroShootingStars thanks for the answer, I tried the raspistill command but it doesnt exist. The camera is the raspberry pi high quality camera V1.0 2018.
On Raspberry Pi 3 and earlier devices running 64bit os you need to re-enable Glamor in order to make the X-Windows hardware accelerated preview window work. To do this enter sudo raspi-config at a terminal window and then choose Advanced Options, Glamor and Yes. Finally quit raspi-config and let it reboot your Raspberry Pi.I hope this helps
Hi, can i ask why after i use command which is sudo rpi-update, and i command the reboot but after the reboot my raspi did not appear on the pc
This command updates the bios. I am not sure when I did it worked for me without issue.
I updated firmware successfully. Every time I enable legacy camera I can't access the pi4 through the desktop anymore. I have to then ssh into the pi4 and disable the legacy camera and reboot for it to work fine. Why is this ? Any help appreciated. I'm running Raspi Bullseye.
i dont know what remote desktop app you are using may be this is conflicting with that. you can use XRDP for remote desktop and it works for me with legacy camera here is my tutorial on XRDP

It worked ! But why is my image is pink colored? Is it somekind of filter maybe you could do a tutorial on how to get a normal view? Thank you very much
Hi if you used the command i shared in my tutorial and still get the pink view this could be due to damaged camera or faulty camera. yes it is normal now for newer os the option is by default enabled how will you can still modify the config file. I hope this helped. please stay tuned to my channel for my future videos.
In my project it is showing command not found
Thank you ❤

Doesn't work for me. I am using a raspberry pi 3B+. Would that matter?
I guess not as mostly the camera and commands are Operating system based not dependent on hardware. Its only way to connect your camera or enabling the camera might be different. In addition to command line enabling camera interface check in your settings menu for interfaces if you have camera enabled if you have that option avialable. If you still have issue please describe your problem may be I could help. Please stay tuned to my channel for my future videos

I have tried to enable the legacy camera using VNC viewer but the issue is that after enabling it and rebooting my pi the vnc doesn't show the desktop please help me with this ....

Hi, I have no button for enable camera module in raspi-config. How can i fix that?
not sure which raspberry pi are you using also check if you upgrading the bios fixes your issue. I hope this helped please stay tuned to my channel for my future videos
If you’re running on the newest version of rasbian OS (Bookworm)then the camera will automatically be enabled, the option to enable it won’t show in the raspi-config interface menu like it does in all other previous OS versions. All you have to do is run the command libcamera-hello or libcamera-still and it should work. If not, editing the config.txt file will most likely be the solution (excluding hardware issues).
Hello @bndwthbeats3636 and @AstroShootingStars , I am using the Raspberry pi 4 with latest 64 bit OS (Bookworm) and same camera which is used in the video, and libcamera-hello works fine for me, but am getting error of not getting frames while capturing video using opencv in python. also camera is not found in the online webcam test or in googe meet video call , could anyone help on this part?
the warning looks sketchy. it works without an update. why do i need it?
You can proceed without update, its just upgrades the firmware not its not mandatory step. I hope this helps. Please stay tuned to my channel for my future videos.

Hello Sir,As soon as I type the command libcamera-still .I am getting a error message that " no cameras available".
Sir ,What should I do now Could you please help me sir?
there could be several reasons. legacy camera mot enabled , faulty cable, faulty camera. try disabling legacy camera. I hope this helps. Please stay tuned to my channel for my future videos
That's funny! 🤣 When you enabled not recommended Legacy Camera support in raspi-config, you actually added "start_x=1" string into /boot/config.txt. Then you edited /boot/config.txt with nano to comment out that string and add "camera_auto_detect=1" which was there by default before you enabled legacy support! What's the point of that?! In other words, you enabled Legacy support via raspi-config and then disabled it by editing config.txt. And you don't have to run libcamera commands with sudo 😅 And, of course, you don't need to enable all the interfaces to make the camera work.
