I use the foca , Zote pink bar (grated), box of dollar store color safe bleach, and regular baking soda. Works very well. I use a little less than 1/4 cup per load sm, med or lg and use gain dryer sheets instead of beads. Your gonna really save and your recipe is a good one. I started using the diy laundry mix from TH-cam but then I found different equivalent products at the DT. So I started making it that way. However, the store near me doesn't have the laundry booster, or oxi-all, nor even their powdered detergent. (I do still use fels naptha and zote in it, though.) Luckily I had some tucked away. I'm working through a 5gal bucket I made up Sept 2021, and I'm maybe a third of the way through it. I use 2 "coffee scoops" per load. I have a top loader he washer. For years I have used equal amounts of borax ( not boric acid) and washing soda, with a few scoops of Oxiclean free because of my allergies. This cleans very well. If there are bad stains, I wet the fabric and create a paste of the powder and then add a bit more water to make it slushy. I let this sit for an hour or more, then wash.
Wow. Getting the stuff to make this up this week. I have 3 boys in sports and we go through a LOT of detergent. I also like to use the scented beads. My Walmart doesn’t have the cheaper options either but I’d rather not grate the bars of soap anyway 😂
Where I live we found a store that has 5 gal buckets of laundry soap for 19.99 they had Tide & gain.I had thought about making it also but after we found the buckets I decided to just buy them and save my self some work
It might be worth it to try. I have to be careful which products I use because my husband and kiddo both have reactions to certain detergents and products. As such, I can only use A&H detergent and products. But, with my family of 3, even half of this would be great.

Just a little heads up. My brother was head honcho at an industrial laundry. He said to be careful what you use, it can cause build up in hoses and lines, especially if you have a septic. I also had to stop using fabric softener sheets. Those can leave residue in the drum of the dryer, and can..cause fires. CAN. Not something I will take a chance on. So..I make and use dryer balls, if you can find the ones made from roving yarn, or perhaps tennis balls, you can add drops of essential oils to it, for fragrance.
I’ve heard some say homemade will ruin washing machines, but it Doesn’t make sense to me. The ingredients in this homemade detergent are all rated for washing clothes already. It’s laundry detergent and commonly used additives. It’s very common for people to use washing boosters, scent beads, soap bars, and oxiclean with their liquid or powder detergents. So if homemade harms machines, wouldn’t using them as additives hurt it too? The only type I’ve had that caused issues, are the pods. The casing doesn’t dissolve all the way, and clogs. I’ll update if I have any issues.
If you run your water first and add fabric softener and detergent and allow it to dissolve it won’t ruin it as bad and regular cleaning of the machine .
Instead of scent beads or scent crystals, I just add the same amount the container holds of Epsom salts and an ounce of essential oil or fragrance oil. My favorites so far are: 1) Sweet orange with honeysuckle (sometimes I'll switch it up and do lemon for the citrus) 2) Cup of hot chocolate 3) Grandpa's den 4) Spring Rain Lane 5) Oatmeal stout 6) Gardenia Breeze
Awesome. I just tried to buy laundry soap at Walmart. I could not bring myself to buy the usual brand. I got the smallest store brand and ran out of there in shock. But his wife said their kids were allergic to the detergent in the pods. I have no problem with that and so ....maybe I have laundry detergent for the next 4 - 5 years ?
I feel you on the cost I have been trying to make laundry detergent stretch as much as possible and make the dollar stretch as much as possible I have gone and used borax and washing soda mixed with dish soap and dull it out in shot glasses to save. Even using the name brands when they come on sale I still use less than they say because I know they're so concentrated and my clothes come out clean and smell clean.
I have to use liquid detergent so I mix up equal parts dish soap (dawn usually), washing soda, , TSP, and borax (dissolved hot water). For a 1280z bottle the ratio is 1/2cup of soap and powdered ingredients and then fill the rest of the bottle with cold water. I just use vinegar in the rinse.
Great for the laundry but do you have a good DISHWASHER soap that cuts the grease and glassware come out without streaks or etching? That is what I really need.... Oh Yeah must work well in HARD WATER cause I have iron, iron, iron.

Is that scoop u threw in 2 tbs? ALSO, is there any reason u used 2 diff brands of 11lb bags? Versus 2 of the same? Asking to learn. My hubby hates spending money BUT doesn’t like my ideas to save SO for 2 adults and 3 kids in the home (expecting 2 more any day now/prayers pleeease) anyway, he spends $650+\- WEEKLY on groceries etc. sometimes 7-800. Laundry is something I can cut down on! Dinners are hard to cut down on (well food in general) bc my middle son has sensory processing issues that also interfere with foods. He also requires 6-8 packs of $11-$14 pediasure packs per week (4yrs old), and my youngest, until the new addition is born , still requires baby foods and formula AND hubby is SO PICKY on food that I can’t just make up dinners as easily. However I love “see what u can make” foods ! I tried to understand coupons for extreme coupons but I can’t understand it to (literally) save my life! Sigh… so… I guess I can only save when it comes to laundry. My oldest son will try foods if I make him (forgot to mention him lol)… we only have hubbys income btw :( our savings is almost non existent now and his work truck just broke down AND we found out yesterday that our roof is leaking bc our bedroom lights have water in them and the house is only 6 yrs old! Everything seems to be going wrong at a very bad time :(
What actually makes it concentrated is when you add the borax super washing soda and also baking soda the borax, and the baking soda really makes a difference you should give it a try and I also make mine in big batches so I do add two boxes of borax two of super washing soda 1 2 pound box of baking soda in a large tote like yours with a locking lid and when I make mine, I layer it so it’s not so hard to mix and everything gets Well Incorporated and I give it a good mix before every use because it does separate because each powder does not weigh the same just a tip and I also like adding several different scent beads and with all that I still come out cheaper because it lasts a lot longer and I have a family of five laundry is always running at my house. It’s definitely worth it to add the extra so you do get that super concentrated laundry powder.❤
Baking soda is just partially neutralized washing soda. It’s a weak base. You don’t need it. It’s a filler. Borax and WS are both water softeners. You don’t need both.
The biggest problem you don’t want to buy liquid because it’s mostly water and if you stop buying so powder you only need 2 tablespoons for a large load we have a tendency of putting a whole cup we are wasting soap powder 2 tablespoons is all you need and then to make my towels flipping I put white vinegar in it
I'm allergic to almost all scented products, and I have extremely sensitive skin. I wish there were a "free and clear" alternative recipe for laundry detergent, but I've never seen one.
Borax, laundry soda, grated Zote and grated Fels Napa should be free and clear. Sometimes I just grate up Fels Napa. 2:2:1:1 proportion is what I do. One of my grandmas had said when she was growing up in the depression, her ma use to use borax, laundry soda and Fels. She also said that they would buy a few bars of Fels, unwrapp them before stacking the Fels to dry out before grating. Letting the Fels cure does seem to make a difference. Easier to grate and more powdery.
I make my own laundry detergent and I enjoy making it. It works just fine-even on foster kitten laundry! 😊 I love the savings and the process of making it to me is therapeutic.
where did you get the original recipe? also I added these ingredients into my walmart cart and its gonna be $90 before tax, is that still a good price to attempt making this? also what would the half recipe be then?
These DYI videos are brilliant for most but my daughter's deathly allergic to many foods & scents. We're both already extremely fair-skinned {C. European} and the products that were dependable years ago are either difficult to find or no longer in circulation. It's just me now, but it seems I'm destined for a house full of allergy-prone beings, this time it's 2 senior dogs. I've made a small batch w/o scents and put some white vinegar in the wash to soften the clothes as well as combat offensive smells. If anyone has anything tried & true to add....please leave a comment. Unless you live a life of allergy threats, you just don't know how lucky you are. Take care, ~ Covah
Try white vinager as the fabric softener, rinses everything out including sent. Makes towels so fluffy and soft. Then it pretty much doesn't matter what you wash with.
Did you know that most new washing machines when you read the instructions that come with your washer you’re only supposed to use 2 tablespoons of any type of laundry soap for a large load isn’t that freaking out people tend to get those scoops and you spell info but they don’t read the box the box says the bottom line is we’re a small load in line just above it is for a large load and then the big line is for an extra large lol but when you take it and you put 2 tablespoons in that container you’re getting exactly what you’re supposed to get which is a portal app app
Just out of curiosity are you on septic because I live in Tennessee and am on septic and we just had our septic tank pumped and when they opened it there was all sorts of powder residue the guy told me it was from powder laundry detergent he told me if your on septic your not supposed to use powder your supposed to use liquid I want to make my own but I would need to make a liquid I need to do some research on this one unless you have any ideas about it love these vlogs.
Dissolve the powder soap in a cup of boiling water. I let mine set 10 minutes then stir. I use the Costco powdered laundry detergent. Very cheap, doesn't give me allergies, and works well.
Hey Brooke, curious if you’re still doing this? Still on your years worth? Do you like it? Most people overuse commercial laundry detergent anyway. Two tablespoons is what you’re supposed to use per load.
Which website did you get that from. Mine I used from a TH-camr named Jillian she used borax and washing soda. My daughter is picky so I stopped using it but it saved me so much money

Since it’s 4-6 people, I would suggest dividing the sizes by 4. And buying the closest size to that number. For instance instead of the 11lb Roma, you would need 2-3lbs. Etc.. it should work!

I made my own laundry detergent for years until one day I had had enough. I bought some liquid All at Costco on sale. It has no dyes or scents which is what I want. I use vinegar in the rinse cycle. I'm 65 and work all day and come home and take care of family and I had to make a choice. I did it for almost 30 years. I do commend those who do it. I really enjoyed making it. Also, I made the liquid version and it takes a few more steps.

The biggest problem you don’t want to buy liquid because it’s mostly water and if you stop buying so powder you only need 2 tablespoons for a large load we have a tendency of putting a whole cup we are wasting soap powder 2 tablespoons is all you need and then to make my towels flipping I put white vinegar in it
Thank you! I’m going to try this.
I love your videos your so real and relatable
Thank you! I hope it works for you! So far I love it! It smells so good and everything is fluffy.
Thank you for this video! I need to consider trying this.
Usa únicamente el jabón zote,no necesitas suavisante, ya que deja la ropa muy limpia, suave y es recomendado para las pieles sensibles.
Saludos.
Try All Free and clear and use less in the wash . One big bottle can be stretched for many washed.
This is awesome! Thank you for this awesome info. PS - I have to wear glasses too and I think you’re beautiful with or without them 😊
Loved this video made my laundry soap back last winter. ❤️
I make my own laundry detergent and I enjoy making it. It works just fine-even on foster kitten laundry! 😊 I love the savings and the process of making it to me is therapeutic.
Brooke! It's a year later! How is the laundry soap working out still!💕💕💕
Thank you for your ideas. You save me so much!!
I love this!!! I’m going to start doing this.
Update on how you like it Please.
Can you use something other than FOCA. I just read it’s toxic
Wife speaking..would definitely love an update how this recipe is working out for you..tfs
Love it! It gets stains out on the first try with no stain treatment! I just let it soak for about 5-10 mins before I close the lid.
@@SouthernFrugalMomma great will definitely try then
I love watching your videos. Thank you so much for the tips. And keep up the good work!
My husband uses alot of soap when washing clothes a bag of foca will only last a month in my house 2 months at the most
where did you get the original recipe? also I added these ingredients into my walmart cart and its gonna be $90 before tax, is that still a good price to attempt making this? also what would the half recipe be then?
Be careful if you have a he machine they say it’s bad for them. I coupon and get my detergent cheaper than doing this.
Right. But these DIY folks are clueless.
Thank you very much! I going to do it.
We have the same exact couch! 😋 Great video as always. I hope you are having a nice week! 🌻
Girl I love my couch! Lol it’s so comfy! You have great taste 😉
I’m an older viewer but my adult sons swear my favorite perfume was ‘Shout’ and that I’d spray them from the end of the dinner table haha…
Hey there how has it worked for you thus far...love the video
I love it. It cleans better than anything I’ve used before. It’s still full and looks like I’ve not used any 😂 but I use it everyday.
Do you still use this recipe? ❤
I made dry beans for the first time!
Woooo!!! Did you like them?
Love your recipes
Will this work in high efficiency HE washers?
Thank you for this recipe.
Try to combat allergies with a complete change in diet. I've seen people get well with holistic medicine Dr's who change diet.
Try white vinager as the fabric softener, rinses everything out including sent. Makes towels so fluffy and soft. Then it pretty much doesn't matter what you wash with.
Loved this❤
Just found this video. How are you liking the laundry soap?
Love it!! I actually just posted a update post lol I’m sticking with this. It gets stains out so well.
Does the Roma and the Foca have a scent to them or are they scent free? Thanks!
They just smell clean. Not really a scent. I don’t remember what the bags said, but it doesn’t smell like much of anything.
Have you done an update on this?
I use the generic oxiclean from dollar tree 🌳
Me too!
Thanks for sharing 👍🏾 😊
I use all that you used besides the beads. I hear over time it ruins the washer.
Yes that’s true.
My laundry detergent that I buy went up 4.00 dollars a jug.Ive started making home made
Thank you so much!!!
How did the laundry detergent do
Thank you for Sharing
So how long did this last you?
Thank you for sharing!
Hey Brooke, curious if you’re still doing this? Still on your years worth? Do you like it? Most people overuse commercial laundry detergent anyway. Two tablespoons is what you’re supposed to use per load.
It's worth a try!
Great content for the hard times we live in
Love the information
Very useful
How long did this last?
Which website did you get that from. Mine I used from a TH-camr named Jillian she used borax and washing soda. My daughter is picky so I stopped using it but it saved me so much money
I found it on Pinterest. After scrolling for what seemed like forever! 😂 I will find it and link it for you!
@@SouthernFrugalMomma thank you Brooke
Lol this recipe lasted us 2 years 😮 we go to the laundry mat we try to go every week but sometimes we can't I won't go more then 2 weeks though. My daughter likes your recipe more lol
What if you are a family of one what would you need?
Since it’s 4-6 people, I would suggest dividing the sizes by 4. And buying the closest size to that number. For instance instead of the 11lb Roma, you would need 2-3lbs. Etc.. it should work!
Does it work well with cold water and in top loaders?
I only use cold water and mine is Top loader. So far so good!
I use homemade laundry detergent also, but I buy no brand from the dollar stores for the Oxy and scent beads... $30 for a HUGH batch❣️ To avoid the work of mixing, I put all the ingredients in a kitchen sized trash bag to mix it❣️ Perfect ❣️ ❤ and you are wonderful and beautiful with or without your glasses 😊 Great Video😁👍❤️
Lol. Their stuff is no bargain. It’s cheap for a reason.
Hello seen it’s been a year . Did it last a year?
So is this the fabric softener too?
That’s what the recipe said! I’m 100% transparent about these budget friendly “hacks”, and this one I am feeling good about. Our clothes smell so good. They are fluffy and soft, and it got out mustard stains on the first try with No stain remover! I was floored lol
Love it
Can this be used in an He washer?
My aunt uses it in hers!
No HE machine is designed to use soap. She’s clueless.
Each box of the zote soap has 3 bars in it
I made my own laundry detergent for years until one day I had had enough.
Lol. What a fool!
Keep us updated
Do y’all think this would work on the washing machine that says you need “he” detergents?
It does!
How's you laundry detergent doing now that it has been some months? My top loader washer uses liquid detergent can I use this kind in my washer?
I think there was a $2 I bought a rebate for the OxiClean I want to double check that though I'm not sure if it's went away or not
Any update on the laundry detergent?
I actually shared an update on the You Tube “community” section a couple days ago!
It’s the best laundry detergent I’ve ever used. No joke. It gets stains out so good. I will do this forever.
First of all you look just as beautiful with your glasses on, more so really because you can actually see. Thanks so much for sharing.
