Thanks much for this info. I have been in Italy, as an US/Italian citizen, since last summer. I bought the private plan and went to an Urologist and went to one using the public (free) plan. But I had to pay about the same for the visit, 120 Euros for the visit. As my Italian is not good, so I have no one to ask why I have to pay. My family doctor is free, but seems any specialist, public or private, I must pay. FYI, I am 69 yr old retiree here in NW Italy. So why do I need to pay for both. Not sure if u know this answer, but would appreciate your feedback. Thanks much. Pete
Hi Pete! I am unsure why you purchased the private plan- the free plan should be fine if you want a second opinion you could always just private pay it is not expensive at all. They do charge for visits based on income and type of visit. I suspect that the 120 euros is nothing compared to what you were paying in the US. I had to pay something for visits while in Italy and it isn't a large amount- and it depended on who I was seeing. Only the primary was completely free. Hope this helps!
Thanks much for the reply. Reason why I bought the private , was , as I am 69. and just in case I needed to go to the hospital, the private insurance said I get a private room vs to room with a group or someone else. Plus, for testing, with private, I can go to private doctors anytime, instead of waiting for one(a specialist ) . Family doctors, as u said, are always free, but the specialist , whether private or public, have to pay, even if 80 to 120 a visit. So, yes, cheaper vs the US. FYI, I paid euro 930/year for the private , so still much cheaper vs the US for any medical insurance. And I can use it all of EU. B/Rgds Pete
Hope u don't mind me jumping into your conversation... I'm Italian, our NHS offers specialists visits with a copay (called ticket) but also specialists visits through a separate dept called "libera professione" which I believe is the kind of visit you paid the 120€ for. In alternative you can ho privately to any specialists who visits in his own studio or in a private clinic and so on. The difference between the private through NHS and the privately owned facilities is the fixed price, which in most cases is also slightly lower (private through NHS ranges usually between 80 - 120€) and in most cases avoids the long waiting list of the free (with ticket). Visits at "libera professione" are booked through the same NHS number (CUP) of the public ones. A specialist visit in privately owned facilities it's usually 120 - 150€ or more. Ticket through NHS varres depending on the type of visit in my region (Tuscany) is 38€ NHS in Italy is managed regionally and because each region has different funds and facilities unfortunately not everywhere it's provided the same service even though the rules should remain the same.
I have planned a 3-month stay in Italy this coming May, should I consider Private Insurance for the period I am there? My current Kaiser Permanente health insurance plan covers emergency and urgent care when traveling outside the U.S.?
It wouldn’t be necessary- any emergency visit you would make would be covered and minor things that could come up you could definitely private pay it would be very inexpensive to visit a doctor.
Hi i am international student i want a health insurance but don’t know what to get coz recent year the cost of public health insurance was 150€ but this year for students it’s 700€ i talk with one private insurance company they said they will charge me 135€ for a year and cover my health insurance I am a bit overwhelmed could you please advise me? 😊
HI Fardeen- I'm not sure what you mean- this video talks about healthcare costs in Italy. If you are in Italy and you need insurance there are many companies that you can contact for quotes.
Hi Vincent! Yes it is - once you obtain citizenship the system is free. There are other reasons why even if you were a citizen you would have to pay- like if you are collecting money monthly in Italy then you would be subject to a fee but that is a different scenario.
@@vincent4810 so dependent on your income for previous year is what you need to pay for visits and procedures through the system. Some citizens are free while others have a fee to pay. You don’t have an annual fee I had that mixed up with the voluntary. Hope that helps!
Thank you! This was helpful.
I'm so glad thank you for your comments!
Thanks more helpful info 👍
Thanks!
Thank you. How is the quality of care?
Hi Paul! The quality of care is great- there are many doctors around and once you’re in an area you’ll get to know people who will recommend someone.

Does Italy have naturopaths along with regular doctors?
Yes they do!
Isn't the public system free for Italian Citizens and their spouses who establish residency in Italy?
Hi Vincent! Yes it is - once you obtain citizenship the system is free. There are other reasons why even if you were a citizen you would have to pay- like if you are collecting money monthly in Italy then you would be subject to a fee but that is a different scenario.
