Funny, I just completed the 1966, 1969-2024 proof sets set (sets set? sounds odd) and the 2014 was the last to arrive this week. I don't disagree with anything you've stated - aesthetics are after all subjective - however I would draw your attention to the 2012 uncirculated/mint set. This set has a selectvely plated gold/silver 50c Coat of Arms AND that CofA is also coloured. IMO a very pretty coin and looks "better" than the proof offering.
I was looking at the old mint issues to see what the RRPs were for older sets and what I saw was incredible. In 1998 the RRP for the proof set was $60.00. By 2010, just twelve years later, the RRP had doubled to $120. Then in 2012 it increased again to $130 before dropping back down to $100 in 2015 - the same year they brought out the nice display boxes. Now each year, since we've had the crappy cardboard inner boxes for the proof sets, the RRP has been growing. I don't mind paying the higher prices for the proof sets, I just wish we had better boxes to house the sets in. I'm over the cheap cardboard. It's getting harder and harder to justify the purchases.
I considered inflation, however the quality of their packaging, particularly over the past three years, countered the inflation, now we’re getting a lesser product on the whole.
I have the 590c coin where the kangaroo and emu are gold, what proof set was that in? I can find very little info on it.I bought it online because I thought it was a really beautiful coin, can you give me a little info on it please

If you account for inflation the sets have decreased in value
If you account for inflation the sets have actually decreased in price
