Complete agreement. Yeah, Russell should keep his position as a Merc reserve driver in mind, but as long as he is in a Williams car, his first priority is to Williams, and that means taking positions when he can.
Bottas made a move that caused Russell to flinch. Ok, fair to criticize the flinch, but what came next wasn't anyone's fault, and for Toto to be upset is disappointing. I thought better of Toto than that.

I commented this elsewhere too, but I don't think Toto has an issue with George going for the overtake. I think he has an issue with walking over to Bottas after/acting the way he did and then acting the way he did in the interview and making explicit an issue that was internal to Mercedes (Bottas v Russel for the seat next year).

But hes talking about the absolute crazy move. It was like 5% chance of getting it, 75% chance crash, 20% braking too late. Russell saw the squeeze, and still tried to send it. Not a good racing decision

  • @Timecop1983

Russell is a Williams driver, not a Mercedes driver. It's not fair of Wolff to expect him to approach a Mercedes differently. I understand he wants that, because he's the team principal, but in the end Russell is a driver for another team, so he's just doing his job.

    • @damedusa5107

Lost respect for Wolff in his comments. He should be more concerned with how a Williams was in a position to take a Mercedes.

    • @jk3838
      @jk3838 3 ปีที่แล้ว +98

Don’t agree. Mercedes has invested huge amounts of time and money in Russell and he wouldn’t be in the Williams without them. To say Wolff shouldn’t criticise him when he causes Mercedes damage, costs, and points is ridiculous. It’s like Man Utd developing a player and whilst on loan to Liverpool, that player does a dangerous tackle on a Man Utd player and injures him. The manager of Man Utd would be right to criticise the player he has created and loaned out for doing damage to the team that invested in him. You could argue that Russel as a Mercedes driver shouldn’t be in the Williams at all, but he is because Wolff got him in there for experience. IMHO Russell should be in the Mercedes this year. He hasn’t done himself any favours in getting into the Mercedes next year. It’s called biting the hand that feeds you

@@damedusa5107 I'm not going to try and pretend to be an expert in racing, but Russel had plenty of space on the left during the overtake. He took way too much of a risk going so close to the limits of the track. It definitely seems like he was blinded by the prospect of overtaking the Mercedes to prove himself. That's what Wolff is referring to when he talks about a global perspective. It's especially dumb for him to keep placing the blame on Bottas after the fact, it was a Russel fuck up 100%.

Because they know that building a whole new car whill cost a lot of money and it'll simply get them closer to the limit of spending which they might get a penalty for if they exceed. It seems nuts to you and all who agree because you are looking at the situation and choosing to interpret what he meant in you own way.
Russell is a Mercedes driver on loan to Williams and so contractually he is actually part of the Mercedes team, and we all saw how tightly integrated that agreement is with him being first choice to fill in for Lewis last season.
In most cases teams would normally pick a test driver for the race but they chose George. Which underlines his status and how highly he is viewed by his bosses at.......Mercedes
Toto wasn't directing his annoyance at the concept of a customer team taking a risky chance at a works team
He was directing it at a Mercedes driver taking a risky chance towards another Mercedes driver. Both signed to him, both under the same Mercedes Umbrella.

Toto clearly is not acting in the best interests of his clients but his team, this is classic case of conflict of interest.
F1 needs to seriously consider banning team bosses from managing drivers full stop. There's clearly an ethical compromise in having one team boss be in control over the career of another driver.
It is already bad enough that if another team wants to enter negotiations with Russell they must speak with Toto, but now were seeing Toto telling Russell not to compete against his main drivers or else. This blatant stand over tactic undermines the integrity of the sport itself and the fact that Toto feels comfortable enough to do it publicly show's F1 needs address the rot.
Left unchecked it will only get worse.

And Russell even kept on saying that he was not the one to blame after being corrected by Toto. Lewis backed off when trying the same move on Nando and waited a few laps to finally pass him. Russell reacted and twitched his steering right due to lack of experience, causing the crash when he dipped his right side tyres on to the grass and it slipped forwards causing him to steer into Bottas.
He had half a car width from Bottas when he was attempting that pass and Bottas barely made any movements towards him.
Had he kept his cool and maintained his line, he would've passed Bottas.
Considering how emotional he was about the whole incident and his childish reaction at attacking Bottas after the crash when the replay was pretty darn obvious who went onto a bad bit of track(grass) and thereafter crashing into the other car (aka, Russel), it shows he couldn't keep his cool and control his actions.
There's a difference between seeing a gap and going for it, and knowing how to take it or leave it, vs seeing a gap, and going for it, but forgetting all the other conditions and consequences that could result from it.
Russell is not that good yet to make that move in those conditions (wet patches on Bottas' left, wet grass on his right). Considering he did make the attempt, and failed, he should've learned that he had a responsibility in how it turned out (and by so doing, also demonstrate that he can learn from it). But his reaction immediately after the incident proved that he did not have the capacity to take such a responsibility (he immediately laid blame on others for his mistake - Bottas didn't force him onto the grass patch, he drove onto it entirely on his own, if Hamilton/Max/Perez/Vettel/Riccardo did that move, they wouldn't have been that spooked by the slight drift of Bottas as they would expect him to close the angle a little due to wet patches on his left).
Hence, Toto had to tell him so - don't be a cunt, Russel was letting some misplaced sense of entitlement to Bottas' position (in some probable future) get in the way of his actual progress and development re: F1 experience. - Bottas being cautious on slicks in the wet vs Russel being a cunt seeing "Oh it's Bottas, time to show him who's better". - that ultimately resulted in a very dangerous crash, and lots of expensive damage to the cars, all in a bid that Russel did something that was in spirit in his own interest to more definitively guarantee his future position in Mercedes, rather than to actually help Williams win anything. (afterall, there are in different class of cars, Bottas' will actually win points and podiums, Russell's hasn't gotten a single point yet til now, and its already the 7th race).
Overtaking Bottas at that point in time would've proved nothing. Anyone can over take a car freshly swapped to cold slicks in the wet, on a straight (but Russell still failed it). Essentially, Russell was only doing that move to flex over NOTHING, and he fucked up, costing millions to Mercedes whom he was trying to 'prove' himself.
Hence the above "I know Bottas for 5 years, he isn't here to prove anything... but what you did was to attempt to prove something and you failed (sic)".

Maybe the real question should have been, why would Bottas try to make an aggressive defending move when conditions were poor? Shame on Wolff for trying to manipulate a competitors driver! The suggestion that a driver shouldn't challenge a Mercedes is ludicrous at best!

To distract from that very fact. This looked WAY too much like the Singapore incident that benefited Alonso. The goal is to put the focus on Russell and let him take the fall, not how Bottas orchestrated an incredibly convenient red flag which gave Mercedes enough time to repair Hamilton's car.

In this particular race this rule directly affected the chamionship standings. Lapped cars should stay lapped during a red flag situation.

All jokes a side that's totally true, Bottas and Lewis would barely get any team points without the safety car and Mercedes would be behind Red Bull in constructors championship now. Toto is not really obset about the destroyed car but rather Russels behavior and attitude, too childish and immature. He misjudged his maneuver, ended up crashing into Bottas, he is still a rookie , dont have a lot of experience especially on the wet track so that's ok, but the fact that he still doesn't want to accept absolutely any responsibility for that crash is what really concerns Toto Wolf now, it means Russel isn't mature enough to replace Bottas yet ...
