    what i like about casey is how she always treats sam like any other sibling like she messes with him, bugs him, and annoys him. like sometimes ppl treated sam differently but casey always treats him like anyone else but at the same time she’s very protective of him

      I like casey but some things they do to bother sam really irritates me. it would make me very stressed and upset if they did it to me and sometimes feels like theyre not respecting his boundaries. i don't like when people touch or move my things from how i have them organised. would make me very very upset. also if casey knows it stresses him out a lot why continue. im not diagnosed with anything, like Sam is but I do see similarities between us. Still love casey tho and that they have a close bond. don't have a sibling so I don't understand sibling relationships that much lol. some of them are just annoying him but some of them really stress him out and upsets him it seems.

    I don’t think people talk enough about Sam and Paige’s break up in the finale. As someone who was diagnosed with autism at 23, I’m very hesitant of watching shows about autism because I know it won’t be representative of me, but I actually liked it, mostly because it focused on sams family members as well (casey is the best). I also thought the ending was weird, it just didn’t make sense and felt way too abrupt.
    It never bothered me that the actor playing sam wasn’t autistic, but for some reason the characters played by autistic actors felt more real to me (they were a bit more like the autistic people I’ve met). I really would have liked it if the show would have gone into their stories and struggles more, but I get that that would make the narrative a little messy.

    • @ellaronci2703

    As much as I love Casey's character I hated how her and Evan's relationship ended. Evan was so sweet, he deserved so much better.

    • @lemurluver12
      @lemurluver12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +91

      I agree Evan didn’t deserve it, but it just goes to show that sometimes people who do terrible things aren’t 100% terrible. Casey was young and unsure of herself, meanwhile Elsa was in a rough spot in her life and in her marriage. It doesn’t excuse the actions, but they’re still redeemable humans. I’ve personally tried to stay more open minded about this subject. I do think there’s a difference between those who revel in their unfaithfulness (serial cheaters, the whole “side chick” phenomenon) and those who make a huge and painful mistake but learn the error of their ways and truly feel remorse. Just my two cents!! I loved Evan as a character and I wanted this show to continue so freakin bad

    • @summera464
      @summera464 2 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      I agree Evan deserved better but the difference between what Elsa did vs Casey is quite big. Casey kissed Izzie once then immediately when to try and talk to Evan and ask her dad what way he would’ve liked to find out about Elsa cheating on him because she knew it was wrong. Casey also told Izzie she didn’t know what they were yet until she talked to Evan, Elsa went back to the dude she was seeing multiple times

    Honestly, Atypical deserved better. It got cancelled, and Netflix basically said "here, have a season 4 to cap things off" but Atypical had set up for so much more. This meant that season 4 had to cut a bunch of corners and was overall rushed. The plot wasn't able to develop as naturally, nor were the characters. Some characters had arcs cut short, some characters were cut entirely. The music also used to be a highlight for me but with s4 it was really lacking and often didn't serve its purpose to elevate the emotional weight of scenes. The conflicts in s4 were really just pointless and repetitive because there was no time to flesh out any real conflict and have it finish well in the season. S4 also felt very disorganized, particularly at the beginning, where it felt like a handful of sketches stitched together into episodes, with little to tie them together. They also dropped the whole concept of Sam's hyperfixation on Antarctica impacting the way he interacts with the world, where there would be an a theme for an episode represented by some Antarctica fact that served as a metaphor for the conflict within an episode. With this, they also dropped Julia's character completely (due to covid, so there was little to be done about it, but still unfortunate.) Overall, Atypical's ending and the show as a whole could have been a lot better if they hadn't been forced into a rushed ending, and if the show had been given proper time to unfold the whole plot and character developments.

    • @MissBelle127
      @MissBelle127 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

  • @RubyMelodyMusic
    @RubyMelodyMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +101

    I thought the finale had to do with the fact that on the penultimate episode the way in which Sam could accomplish his goals (the school program) was cancelled because no one else wanted to do it. So he thought, I just can't do it. Then what ends up happening is the people around him help him realize that he doesn't need anyone else to do the things he wants to do, he can just do them. Which is a really big realization for any new adult, but especially important for someone who has grown up fearing they may never be fully independent because of who they are.
    Throughout the season he proved he knew what is needed to physically get to Antarctica, he understands that he has a brief window before it's night time for months. In terms of knowledge, he is better prepared for a trip to Antarctica than most people so he spends the entire season physically preparing for the trip. Bracing himself for the physical toll, raising money, etc. His family does well enough financially that it seems he can afford the trip and his father, who also has significant growth, realizes that he needs to finally use the years worth of vacation days he's saved up and experience something magical with his son. He's never dreamed that big but his son has been dreaming of this his whole life and is fearless enough to make it happen. He also realizes he hasn't spent nearly enough time with him and he should really start.
    The dynamics of the family are forced to change and it's like all the seasons prepared them for where they are now.

    Tbh I feel like the finale problem comes mostly from Netflix being a little bitch and cancelling the show which was originally planned to have 5 seasons. So instead of having 2 full seasons, the creators had to pack everyone's arch somehow in just one. That's most likely why they chose to focus mainly on Sam's arch development, as he is the main character, and just tried to kinda conclude other's stories in the screen time that was left.

    I think that's the problem with representation, this need to fill EVERY ROLE with someone of that group. I think representation is best served as content, not just people, if that makes sense. But you said it yourself, it's acting. Part of acting is learning and absorbing or even accepting a different perspective, life-style, or adopting challenges and then expressing it. It's acting and that's what actors do. Hell, that's the human experience - learning and understanding perspective - be it our own or beyond that. There are plenty of roles (not just in Atypical) that are filled with actors that have challenges associated to the characters they are playing, but it doesn't need to be that way all of the time. If you want something to compare/contrast with when it comes to representation done right/wrong: Compare Atypical to Music. Oof.

    • @hotpeppypepper3294
      @hotpeppypepper3294 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      But then that's not representation and to say the problem with representation is "this need to fill EVERY ROLE with someone of that group" is frankly idiotic. The problem is that the main character was not played by someone on the spectrum while others were. Your "problem" with representation is idiotic because there are actors to play those roles and more importantly writers to tell their stories. Representation would not be representation if people portraying characters are not a part of those groups. It's sorta like minstrelsy. The whole point of representation is to show the perspectives of everyone, but for you to properly understand that you have to listen to those often marginalized groups because then it's just talking over them.

      @@hotpeppypepper3294 "Representation is to show the perspectives of everyone" is what you said. You don't just need actors to do that. Writing does that. Production design. The research and included parties to create the facts and experiences are a part of that. What I said isn't idiotic at all. It's about respect, understanding, and expression. You are confusing me with culture vultures. No. That's not what it's about. There's a big difference between sharing an experience and taking an experience and erasing the origin. That's talking over them or ignoring them. And even when you think about it, do all hood films have actors from that area playing the roles? No. Are all Asian actors Japanese warriors and swordsmen? No. Were all the actors in any Mexican heist film gunmen and bandits? No. Like I said, it's best served as CONTENT not just people. Why? Because the content is a much larger and more inclusive portion and not just limiting it to faces. Have a good one!

      @Aaron_Smith_OM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@eduardoceja9037 I don't think you are understanding what I'm saying. I'm saying that representation keeps getting limited to ACTORS. It's more than that. The writers, the producers, those interviewed in the research and so on, should also be what representation includes. Was it not too long ago that people were saying more writers of color and diverse backgrounds in the writing room? Producing the CONTENT? Not just ACTING? I'm targeting the statement that was said in the video of Kier not being on the spectrum. I further went to show why representation isn't limited to actors with comments about hood films and so on. Example. I'm from Baltimore. I know how shit is around here and not for a second did I believe Idris Elba in The Wire. But I did believe Snoop. Snoop is from here. Snoop is of this area before being an actor so the diction, vernacular, and body language was all Baltimore. In the movie Kids, some of the actors (which had no acting experience) were plucked right from the area and some were pulled from casting calls and agents. In Music...? Do you want me to go into that one? Having a background working with kids with Downs, Autism, and Bipolar challenges, that film was largely disrespectful and played up on stereotypes, like the misunderstanding of compression. Not all people with autism appreciate and welcome compression techniques. Atypical was also lead by an actor without autism but it did wonders. Why? Because the CONTENT as a WHOLE was inclusive and had representation, not just throwing it on the actors, but in the rooms were things are conceived. Hell, look into the debacle of Kim's Convenience. That's another reason why representation needs to be in the meeting rooms versus just on the actors. The executives and writers were reluctant to have an Asian decision making team to tell the stories of Asian-Canadians. Again, representation is about the entire CONTENT not just the actors. But if the actors are taking roles where they aren't from that particular group, then take the chance to understand it, appreciate it, and express it. Which Kier did because that's his job. I never said don't cast someone of that group. It just needs to be on the content Read what I'm saying and step back to understand it. Get out of your feelings and understand what someone is saying. Take care!

      From an audience’s pov I totally understand why you’re like why would she leave a nice bf for a questionable person? Like Izzie was very hot and cold for a while, but I personally went through the *exact* same thing as Casey, so even when you have an awesome bf, when something life changing happens, like the realization that you’re not straight and may like the someone else, you feel like you owe it to yourself to explore those feelings so you don’t repress them or regret anything later. Even if it’s with a wishy washy person (my experience was 🙄) but my bf and I actually got back together (later) and talked about it all and I appreciated the opportunity to figure myself out even if it didn’t end up working out with her. It’s a risk you’ve gotta take for yourself even if you have a perfectly good bf.
      What I *didnt* appreciate was people cheering for her and Evan’s break up just for a ship to happen. Like she genuinely loved him and was really sad about leaving him, why would that be something to cheer about? From other queer people I saw cheering for it, it just felt biphobic or like fetishization of their ship cuz it’s not like Evan was a bad partner. (Sorry for the long rant!)

    Could you maybe explain at what point it is problematic to act as though someone/ something you are not
    I really thought about it a lot and I have points for both sides because I know how important representation is but knowing that most people don’t care about who the actor is
    Like I heard many people tall about representation of different sexuality’s and how only if you identify as the specific sexuality you should play the character, and would that mean that LGBTQ+ people are excluded from straight roles or homosexual from bisexual roles?
    At what point is it problematic for an actor to act as if?
    I don’t really know and would love to hear your opinion on this

    • @mutsawashemaregedze4394
      @mutsawashemaregedze4394 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Same because, these roles are written a certain way, there's still stereotypes in media. Sadly. Like an irl les acting as a les in a film and there's stereotypes, won't that anger the community as well.

    • @canaidavis8573
      @canaidavis8573 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think the problem is also that not being able to fully relate to/ experience life as a certain minority can have major issues in regards to representation. The actor could enforce stereotypes, even unintentionally. For instance, a man playing a trans woman would subtly suggest that trans women are playing dress-up or “manipulating” straight men to become “gay”; the movie’s intentions could contrast to society’s view of their portrayal. There’s also the whole problem of telling a community’s story without including them in it. Blackface had so much popularity because white audiences could listen to black stories without having to see an actual black person. They profited of the creativity of a whole group of people whilst holding them down in every other regard. Blackface was more blatantly racist and problematic (since it purposefully played into stereotypes for enjoyment), but several problems can arise from not casting people in minority groups to star in television/movies.
      Edit: I think if someone has experienced life a certain way, they should be able to portray it on screen. A gay woman could play a straight woman since she has experience being straight, or living out a portion of her life as such. Race, disability, and mental illness don’t have as much fluidity for casting. At least for the most realistic, non-harmful portrayals. Some actors play these roles incredibly well, and the stories resonate with their audience.

    • @rosie4967
      @rosie4967 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t find is as much problematic as I find it disappointing overall I liked atypical but that doesn’t make it above critic. When picking an actor you pick the person you think can give the most believable performance to an audience by not picking an actor with autism it could be seen to suggest that an autistic person could not have done just as good a job. And while it is true that actor with disabilities may need different adjustments provided these is a more than fair deal for profiting of others struggles.
      The truth is people with disabilities are not seen in media as much as they exist in real life until we have hit a point where we see this happen and see disabled people cast for non disabled roles and in background casting and small roles as well. I think it is easy to see why people find this particular casting controversial. It’s all talk no action activism
      Furthermore I think it only damages minorities to pretend we should address situations the same for all as if they are all identical lgbtq history is different to indigenous history or disability history although they often intersect there are differences this is not to say one is more or less oppressed but rather that as a society we often over simplify what is very complex

Isn’t the job of an actor to act and take on a character? If everyone played only characters of their own identity then they wouldn’t be actors? They are just actors ACTING. As long as the actor uses there money to help the cause and create awareness and become an ally, it’s honestly really great. I just think as long as they do it well and respect the character and the condition it’s not really that big a deal.

    Yeah i also feel like they didnt end it off on a great note because the whole 4th season was trying to figure out how exactly Sam was getting to Antarctica but we never know how he actually gets there?? But it is a very great show

    As someone with autism, I'm getting pretty sick of us only being portrayed as self absorbed narcissists. between this and The Good Doctor, I'm pretty fed up.

    I dont really like how they frame people first language as good. Its actually pretty ableist that you need certain structure when you speak to remind yourself and others that people on the spectrum are people. You should be able to recognise that theyre people.

    I'm autistic and I don't personally mind that the actor is not autistic. It's nice that he did his research to make sure that he did represent things properly.

    i love your thoughts on the show.
    i absolutely adore atypical like it is truly a show i hold near and dear to my heart but that final season 👎🏾 like there are things in it that i love but overall it just wasn’t the best. i think it’s because the creator intended the show to be 5 seasons but then the pandemic happened so they missed out on a year of filming and netflix didn’t wanna give them the extra year so they had to try and squeeze 2 seasons worth of things into 1 which isn’t possible. i agree with you that a lot of things were just left open and some things were just kinda skipped over. I really hope that maybe they can come back and finish it out or give cazzie the spin-off they deserve but that’s just wishful thinking on my part lol

    The one thing that bothered me about Atypical was that Sam was not played by someone with ASD. I feel like an important theme of the show was to show how capable people on the spectrum are. So, why not show that by casting someone with ASD?

    I'm sorry but I'm not a fan of Cazzie. Their relationship IN MY OPINION! ISN'T IT. Like the way they met, Lizzie fakes being harmed and accuses Casey and that was just brushed off as something normal??

    i i didnt like izzie at first but then i felt bad for her in season 4. izzie being a poc and less privileged than casey gives her a disadvantage so i could understand her frustration when casey, a white girl, away with things easily.

    On that note, I feel like with some of the recurring issues, you mentioned with Zahid or Elsa, for example, while I agree it may have felt annoying to see again in this series , I personally feel it actually what made the show a bit more realistic.
    Have we all made mistakes in our lives before? Yes. Have some of us learned from it? Most probably yes. Have some of us made those same mistakes again later despite those lessons? I’d say a lot of us do. Because when it comes to personal growth, or character development etc, it’s not uncommon for us to have to hit a lot of bumps along the way.
    I could relate to a lot of Sam’s annoyances when Zahid got back with Gretchen, for instance.. I’ve had a lot of friends go for or fall for the same “type” of (bad-news) guy over and over again throughout a span of time in their lives. . It took for many of those falls before some finally not only learned the right lessons but to actually apply them to their lives before the outcome ever changed.
    So, I felt with Elsa being nosy or whatever, it was how she was for a good portion of her life and new habits would for sure take time to rewire and relearn, similarly with Zahid’s romantic decisions.
    So I don’t see fault in that for this show, so much as I see it was depicted more closely to what real life could be like for a lot of people versus what we’d like to hope life’s journey to be, you know? Free of repeated mistakes/failures, for example, which I dont think is truly accurate … If anything, it only perpetuates unrealistic expectations that people either learn real quickly or can change things overnight, which is probably more harmful for younger more impressionable viewers who may feel more frustrated with themselves if and when things dont go their way or according to plan….. (which most people learn life never truly follows, fluidly anyway lol) …I don’t know I could go on on this topic but I’ll stop here so I dont create a trilogy of novels 😅😂
