    I really liked how despite Rahim having totally valid anxieties about his coming out to his parents, that they strayed from the typical “ragingly homophobic” Muslim parent trope and that they just reacted like loving parents

      we deserved a scene of him coming out tho! kind of didn't like how Rahim only existed when Victor was around. He's far more interesting than Benji.

    • @Lupin788
      @Lupin788 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@Ray03595 Rahim is more interesting than Benji because the writers haven't delved into his back story very much. We find out Benji is a recovering alcoholic but that was apparently mentioned only to be used later as a loss of trust issue between Victor and Benji. I agree they rushed through Rahim's back story about coming out to his parents. Also, he just showed up one day as Pilar's "gay best friend" without any explanation how they met. You say Rahim only seems to exist when Victor is around and that's kind of true also for Benji even though he's supposed to be one of the main characters.

      @@Lupin788 good point about benji. he also didn't really have a life outside of victor that we were shown. for the amount of screen time he got this season it's pretty surprising.

    "it was Felix's season" Hell yes it was. He's my fav character and victor was lowkey not there for him at all this season. Wondering what you thought about his love triangle? Personally, I think pilar and felix had great chemistry in season 1 so I was happy to see them become a thing this season even tho it was definitely rushed. But also, I felt bad for lake cause she really didn't do anything wrong this time around. I think their breakup was inevitable though. I'm hoping to get more Pilar development next season cuz they always talk about how she's sad and moody or whatever but never really delve into that
    Also Mia's dad made me LIVID
    And yeah Victor getting on a chair to announce his sexuality was so awkward to watch like imagine being so self centred that you think everyone cares about your sexuality/who ur dating xD. If this happened in a real high school most people would just keep walking to class.

    Mia is the first character that I’ve ever related to in tv or film. Despite me relating to her because we’re the same race, I’ve always felt overlooked by the ones who are supposed to love me. Mia’s arc isn’t always revolved around romantic love interests or the butterflies about falling in love, but a multitude of different kinds of relationships and their shortcomings; and to me that’s a first. Sometimes, I want to see a story where it isn’t always about getting the one you want because some of us out here be missing when we shoot our shot lol or is a failure on the romantic love front.

    When it comes to the Isabel I actually liked the process of her accepting Victor as being gay. She really struggled trying to understand because of her upbringing, culture, and her religion. She acknowledges it’s going to take time to unlearn what has been taught to her for decades. I think because of Ana Ortiz acting it felt more real.
    In a lot of shows it’s usually the mom who is automatically okay with their kids coming out and the dad who rejects or has to come around.

      Me too. Seeing Isabel struggle to accept victor made me think of myself not too long ago. I don't have any close lgbt friends/family, but I did struggle to accept lgbt people for some time, because of the same reasons as Isabel. I think that's why I had a problem with her. She reminded me if my past self. Seeing her grow felt kinda close to home, idk.

    While I didn’t like the chair scene (it was really awkward to watch), I think it kind of makes sense why Victor did it because Creek Secrets was spreading lots of bad things about Mia to the point that it was affecting her in real life, not just online. Since gossip is such a big part of the school, it makes sense that Victor felt like he needed to make a big announcement (but he should’ve just pulled a Simon and posted something on Creek Secrets instead).

    I liked it but it really irked my soul how the family and allies got a whole support group and the lgbtia teens only had each other. And the concept of a support group for straight people is so weird to me. Also the setting is Atlanta so where are the black people? I don’t feel like Andrew and Mia was enough. You can also apply the interracial relationships with a default white person to their friendships too cause all the poc had a white best friend if not a white partner too. I thought it was really weird how lake tried to say she understood Mias pain after her mom left cause she saw Mia go through it :/

    • @kaepeterman4394
      @kaepeterman4394 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah, most PFLAG chapters I know with support groups also haves ones for queer teens in addition to parents, so it’s definitely weird. Granted most of this shows plot wouldn’t happen if the teens went to therapy instead of acting out and I think the writers avoided any sort of support/counseling for that reason (though it would definitely be fantastic to see).

    on the topic of lgbt characters being played by only lgbt actors is not really a black and white subject. while i do think lgbt actors should definitely get the opportunity to tell our stories over straight actors, a lot of actors only come out after playing lgbt roles. like the keiynan lonsdale who played bram in love simon only came out after the movie, and that was his second lgbt role. the guy who played jackson in teen wolf also only came out after his character came out on the show as well.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if some of the currently “straight” actors in Love, Victor aren’t identifying as queer by the end of the decade (a la Ronen Rubinstein who came out as Bi once his career was more established)

    • @TiaTruly
      @TiaTruly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Yes, this is exactly one of the many talking points in this complicated discussion. An actor has to be OUT in order to be known as a "queer actor" and not many actually are...yet. Hollywood is just now starting to realize that it's not actually "okay" to have cis actors playing trans roles. Progress is being made, it's just been moving slow.

    • @Lupin788
      @Lupin788 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Sadly, Hollywood is still very homophobic. Talent agents often still advise clients to not be openly gay (especially if they're just starting out). You mentioned Ronen Rubinstein from 911 Lone Star. His co-star Rafael Silva also only became more open about his sexual orientation once the show became an established hit with "Tarlos" (Rubinstein and Silva's character couple) leading the way. It does help that 911 Lone Star is a show produced by Ryan Murphy who has gone out of his way to not only make shows with lots of queer characters but also cast lots of queer actors. Going back to Love Simon, the 2018 film that was the inspiration for Love Victor, the actor who played Bram came out to his fellow cast members right at the end of filming and on Instagram a few weeks later to fans.

    Great analysis. In terms of lgbtqa themed content especially around high school age, love victor is the best to have done it so far. Now I m “old” enough to remember that a show like this wouldn’t have been possible 10 years ago when I was a HS freshman. I feel privileged to be in the age of Love victor, pose, generation etc. and I think we as a society can do a better job at accepting these shows for what they and while also acknowledging their short-comings. I feel like you personally do that well, sir.

    You brought up some really good points. However honestly this whole season seemed really rushed to me, particularly Rahim and Victor. Love Rahim, I think he is an amazing character. and can not wait to see how his character develops. But this is the issue that I have. You go on a break with your boyfriend, who you supposedly love. Then go on a "date" with Rahim, who you just met, literally. You have a lot of things in common, wonderful. And now because of miscommunication with your bf, you fall for another dude, who you just met, make it make sense. Dont get me wrong there were some great parts like, the mom to come full circle was amazing. However, I am so tired of media and how they portray gay couples. Like I get it, we want the drama, but that doesnt mean you have to bring a complete stranger into the situaiton to shake things up, especially when you just got into a relationship. These shows depicts us gays as not being monogamous, and we cant have a healthy relationship, and we are always in some kind of triangle, and Im over it. Theyve known each other for like what 2 weeks, if that. BTW what is the tiimeline, the last 2-3 episodes, I wish I knew the timeline. Cause it seems like all this happened in 2 days? I get that Victor is all knew to this and his hormones are all over the place, but I like Victor and Benji, I fell in love with them 1st season. I do believe that Benji and Victor need to communicate and have a long conversation. Rahim needs to be Victor friend going into the 3rd season. Oh yea and the thing hinting at Lake being possibly "bi" makes no sense either, it came out of know where. There was no clue that shes into women, its almost like the writers didnt know what to do with Lake, oh but let's throw this scene in there with Lake chatting it up with another girl. I also think that the writers dont know what to do with Mia character as well, He character seems like a missed opportunity to me, like the writers c'mon. It seems like shes almost an after thought.

  • @apocalypseready6256
    @apocalypseready6256 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    I have some thoughts about this season, so I’m just gonna list them out:
    1. I really dislike how much romance consumes the more wholesome and supportive friendships of the show. One of the better parts of Season 1 was Felix and Viktor’s friendship, where I feel it (and all other friendships as a whole) are swept under the rug for the sake of love triangles.
    Like, Andrew had more interactions with Felix than Viktor did (they never really went anywhere with him befriending Felix either). And, as a result, a lot of the more promising emotional moments felt completely unearned and empty without them bonding on screen. One of the most baffling decisions of the whole show was when Felix revealed his mother’s situation, and there’s no scene of him talking about it with Viktor or Viktor even really comforting him. It just cuts to the next episode, where Viktor is rousing him from bed while counting the minutes when he can talk to Benji!
    I get it, they’re teenagers. Relationships can feel more life-changing and consuming than friendships. But so many fulfilling moments and quietly intimate (platonic) scenes were lost because it was so rushed.
    2. This ties into problem 2, admittedly a personal one. I was kinda against Pilar and Felix because I liked him and Lake together, but moreover I really hate the big brother’s best friend falls for little sister trope. Idk, that trope is personal and, to me, (quite irrationally, I concede), I blamed the prioritization of Pilar and Felix over Viktor and Felix as where their relationship comes apart. I now concede Pilar and Felix are cute, and most of all, Lake and Lucy looks like a promising duo as well. But it took a while.
    3. Benji was literally the worst and I hated him this season. He was such an arrogant douchebag who never communicated his issues, but then expected Viktor to be able to do so. Like when he got angry that Viktor danced with Rahim, even though he’s the one that broke up with Viktor over his own irrational impulses! Viktor x Rahim all the way-also, Rahim just has a lot more personality and is so much more communicative about his feelings.
    4. Thank God they finally addressed the struggles of interracial dating. Also, just the existence of bi/pansexuality (well, they vaguely hint at bisexuality with Lake. Wouldn’t say that’s much progress, but it’s a step up).
    5. Ngl, the kissing scenes always make me cringe from this show.
    6. Ik this is dumb and kinda unnecessary, but I kept noticing how dry everyone’s skin looked. As rude as it is, I was just constantly thinking about how badly in need most of the cast was for moisturizer, or a good cleanser or toner or something! It was distracting me, which is mostly my fault for fixating on stupid stuff anyways.

      Honestly, it felt so weird. I know Pilar gets him and understands his problems, but that doesn’t make Viktor’s role in his life obsolete. I know Viktor just came out and had bf issues, but that also doesn’t mean he can’t be there for Felix. And I honestly don’t think it’s a result of Viktor’s self-centeredness or his flaws, but a result of timing and the pace of the episodes.
      They didn’t have time for the Felix Viktor friendship, so they prioritized the romances over what I consider one of the most important relationships in the show. And that’s not how you write a series, because it feels rushed and way too fast. I guess they think romance is more important or your partner is your best friend, which is true - to an extent - but they fail to understand how friendships play a larger role in a teenager’s life since this happens to all the characters who enter a romantic relationship. They just seemingly forget their old friends.

    Honestly, the worst thing about Benji is that he was almost like a dark rain cloud over Victor. He brought nothing but toxic energy to Victor. When it came to his mother he never gave her any credit when she’s a grown woman trying to unlearn something she’s been told all of her life. He yelled at her after she she walked in on her teenage son having sex and was (understandably) angry. Benji brought pessimistic energy to that situation. Also the basketball situation when Victor was bummed about the guys not wanting him to change with them, Benji had an “I told you so” attitude. And the way Benji exploded on him at the restaurant, that was the moment I could not understand Victor being in a relationship with him.

    I see a LOT of ppl hating on Rahim bc they just ship Benji and Victor but if you strip away the "omg they're cute" or "they belong together" and actually analyze and break down Victors and Benji's relationship which is what I'm going to do, you can see why they might not work out.
    Like Benji said Victor is new a being gay so they have to take everything so slow and Benji needs to "coach" Victor through it, so obviously that's gonna frustrate Benji, and that's fine, Benji is allowed to feel that way. But if Benji doesn't like to takes things slow and having to explain things to Victor that might mean Victor isn't the one for him.
    Benji comes from a white family, so they're much more supportive than a family of color not to mention a religious family. So naturally for someone who has been out for a while and their parents are supportive would be frustrated and angry when their boyfriends family in this case mother isn't. Benji in his words "doesn't jump for joy at every little step" Ilsa takes, but what Benji can't understand is that every "little" step for him is a HUGE step for Victor and a even bigger one for his Mother. Benji can't understand that bc he is white and he doesn't understand the culture and the religions implications and this isn't to say that white ppl can't be religious, but poc take religion to another level, their religion almost always shapes their life. This is coming form a Mexican who's family is also Catholic so I know what's it's like. So white ppl really can't understand this
    Rahim in the other hand does. While Benji and Victor might've had at least 1 year to bond, and while Rahim and Victor have had way less (and this is were ppl think it's lazy writing) they already have that connection bc of their situation, bc they both have religious parents and they both have skeptical parents, that's something the Victor and Benji most definitely don't have and even if they get back together and live out their days they probably will never have that bc of Benji culture. That also means Rahim is more understating of Victors mom bc he himself has those types of parents, so it'll be easier for him. Since Rahim is also new to being gay that means they can take things at the same pace and they can figure out what they don't know with less friction bc they're both in the same boat.
    At the end Victor will choose who makes HIM happy not who makes us happy. If he goes and thinks things with him and Benji can work out great and if he thinks Rahim is a better fit great as well. But when looking at a relationship don't guide yourself on the reasons like "oh they're cute", "Benji was his 1st", "he lost his virginity to Benji", "they said I love you", "they've been together for a long time" or "Benji helped him come out"none of these or other reasons. Actually break down the relationship and look at it from there without bias

    Ok I love Rahim but I think benji was with victor through so much and had to deal with a lot, (victors mom mostly). And personally I don’t think it would be fair if Rahim got the accepting loving parents that victors parents became because of benji and victors relationship. I do think that benji will never understand certain things Bc he’s a economically stable white guy. But I feel like victor and his relationship was raw and filled with love until other people got in the way. I think that’s Rahim and victors relationship was a friendship at first but then Victor felt it was a breath of fresh air and it was easy and those feelings were seen as infatuation. But idk, when ever I watched Rahim and victor I felt like I was watching best friends but with benji I saw a real young relationship that had ups and downs but could be worked though.

    I don't know, I feel uncomfortable with the idea of only casting gay and bi actors for roles like this because it ends up putting a lot of pressure on actors who might belong to those communities but be closeted, or not want to make that part of their life public. Same goes for authors too, the writer of Simon Vs. The Homosapien Agenda felt pressured into coming out as bi because "she shouldn't have been telling those stories". This isn't like cases of whitewashing and colorism in casting or casting cis men to play trans women, there's more nuance to it imo.

    I felt like this show was rushed. Ending of relationships and begin of the new ones. I don't know, maybe it's because they are short episodes and I watched it all in one day I don't know.
    I get Mia dating the college guy and moving on to Andrew coz they dated for like a day or so and he was a dbag. Plus her and Andrew had always had something going on.
    But Felix moving from being in love with Lake to being in love with his friend's lil sister was very rushed. Also, breaking up with your partner coz they care about you did not make any sense. I get being mad/angry at them for 'betrayal', but a whole break up. Especially coz his mom really needed the help she got from Lake's stunt. Pilar is okay and I feel like I will enjoy their relationship, but for me, it felt rushed af.
    Then Victor. Boy oh boy. I get that Benji was annoying and totally didn't get the cultural differences or whatever. But really I was so annoyed with Victor as well. Like can he grow some balls and learn to be assertive. To some extent Benji was right, Victor's mom was an obstacle to their relationship and Victor just refused to see that. We (poc) know how our parents are about certain things but it does not make us blind to their actions. We know what is happening. But it felt like Victor did not want to acknowledge the fact that his mom was being a bitch. I like Rahim, but I feel like Victor likes him because he is an easy choice for him.

    Great video! I am also team Victor x Rahim for sure. They just seemed to have a connection that Victor and Benji didn't have. Also I love Felix so much, and I'm so happy they delved more into him in this season.
    Just wanna comment on what you said about only lgbtqia+ actors playing lgbtqia+ characters. I definitely agree! But it's also good to keep in mind that there are closeted actors out there who know the lgbtqia+ experience but haven't come out yet. And if an actor is gay and they play a gay character, for instance, it would be kinda shitty for the audience to complain that it's played by a "straight" actor and thus make the actor feel like they have to come out when they're not ready just to justify their playing of the role.. :) Loved this video, though! I always agree with what you have to say. love your channel!

However i want benji to still be with victor but lets be honest them 2 have the ABSOLUTE worst communication skills they need to get that sorted in s3 (if there is gonna be one which there better be) I want them to talk everything out like be truthful and everything. I think that benji had a massive breakdown this season and he needs to get that sorted. But i really wanna see some vahim it would definitely add some spice to the show. • @Leo-hk9fz
    @Leo-hk9fz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    As a gay teen the way they handled Victors "apology" to Mia is something I have a big problem with. Already in season 1 I saw how ppl didn't like the repeating trope of "someone comes out/figures out who they really are at the expense of someone else" I understand why some ppl didn't like, bc in some way it's validating that hurting someone doesn't matter as long you find out who you are, but I actually did like the idea, key word DID. I liked bc it is very realistic and something that does happen. Often when you're trying to 1 trying to hide your sexuality, you enter a relationship with someone to pretend you're straight and if you finally come out that person will be devastated bc it was all a lie or 2 (and this is kinda Victor's case) when you're unsure of ur sexuality and you start a relationship with someone bc u actually like them and for it to help you figure yourself out, but then you realize you don't like that gender and once again when they find out, they're devastated. This show is going for a more realistic approach, so I thought they would really show how the person who finds out ur non-straight will be really affected and how the person who comes out will need to take accountability, that's why I liked it, bc I thought they were gonna use this moment to teach the audience but they didn't and I'm really disappointed.
    So when Victor says sorry to Mia, Mia then says "I feel like I'm NOT allowed to be mad at you bc coming out is the most important thing you've ever done". And that's the part that really made me angry, what's upsetting isn't that Victor dated Mia to figure if he liked her but that once he did realize he was gay he still kept dating her without actually tryna come out to at least her, but I let that slide bc coming out is very scary. What I don't excuse and shouldn't is that Victor goes further by cheating on her by kissing Benji not once but TWICE! And it doesn't end, on top of that the show makers or the writers, or whoever, they not only excuses his actions with "he was coming out" but that also justifies what Victor did. But it still doesn't stop, it goes one step further by making the victim, Mia, say they're not allowed to feel upset which is BS! Just bc you are going through something, in this case figuring out ur sexuality doesn't give u a free pass to hurt someone and when u hurt someone not to properly apologize or take accountability. What the writers should've done is let Mia tell Victor how upset she is bc she is most definitely allowed to feel that way and they should've had Victor acknowledge her feelings and let her know she SHOULD feel angry and done a better job taking accountability for the kissing Benji and leading her on. That would've been more realistic and a moment for everyone to learn.

Why go to the dance knowing you don't have feelings for her and have a high chance running into Benji? Always putting himself in a position of temptation and kiss Benji on two occasions. I'm gay and I love mia and she didn't deserve that or anything that came after. She could've outed him but choose to take the hits smh.

      Mia adds that "but I
      just wish that you doing
      the most important
      thing you've ever done
      didn't make me feel like shit" so she does tell us how she feels about it and that Victor should've handled it better. I think the writers wanted to make Mia a good, forgiving person and highlight their friendship but ultimately Victor doesn't get called out. I see that the problem is that they muddled "figuring out your sexuality" and "cheating". Like Victor shouldn't be made feeling bad for questioning his sexuality while dating a girl but he should've broken up and been criticized for cheating (like I'd forgive his first kiss, he was exploring and confused, but the finale wasn't it). It didn't hinder my enjoyment of the show because I didn't think too deep about it but I see why it's something that would annoy people.

    The second season of LOVE, VICTOR was an improvement over the first one. While there were still some contrivances caused by lies, secrets and misunderstandings, they weren't predominant anymore. Most of the drama was generated by people having realistic problems without easy solutions. And the characters are still likable (arguably more than before).
    *Spoilers ahead!*
    In E4, Victor says he wants to go to a cabin with Benji and his friends for the weekend. Isabel says she and Armando should discuss it first, but Victor calls her out for being apprehensive about his sexuality. Here's the thing, though: These are still teenagers, so it's normal for a parent to have doubts about an unsupervised getaway. The writers should've waited to use this idea in a later episode. One where Isabel has learned to fully support Victor. That way, during this scene, she would say "No, if you had a girlfriend, I would've reacted the same way."
    In E9, Rahim says to Victor "I didn't finish reading LORD OF THE FLIES. Who knew a bunch of hot British boys getting stranded on an island could be so boring?" Ummm... Aren't the characters in that book pre-teens? Ewww!
    In E10, ends with Victor *and* Felix *and* Armando realizing who they want to be with and going to their homes. Lake didn't get a full declaration, but it was close enough. Look, when you have an ensemble like this, you should try to be more varied with how you wrap up the different storylines for the season. You also shouldn't repeat the format of the cliffhanger from the previous season (a shot of Victor saying something important and fading to black before we see the reaction). Speaking of, Victor now has to pick between Benji and Rahim, whom he hasn't known for that long. Therefore, the ending isn't really a nail-biter. Even if he does choose Rahim, then that would make the previous scene pointless. You know, the one where Felix told Victor to imagine his future in great detail and who he wants by his side. That meant he was going to pick the boy he loves, not the boy he merely likes. Not that Rahim is a bad choice, but realistically, picking him would be based on other factors.

    @Insipid42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I guess I'll be the miscreant Benji defender because someone has to. I'll concede that the way Benji acted towards Isabel during that scene was incorrect. However, Isabel had been treating Benji like shit FOR MONTHS! Refusing to let him in the house, throwing out their food rather than allowing him to eat there. Showing visible disgust whenever he showed Victor the slightest affection. He had every right to lose his temper. Her being a POC does warrant some consideration... but only so much. Being a POC doesn't give you carte blanche rights to treat your son's boy friend in any fashion you want.
    And Benji also had every right to be upset with Victor for sharing his AA status. He's known for over a year how sensitive Benji is about that. And then for Victor to blab about it to another man- especially another gay man? He has a right to be pissed.
    Plus I do have a lot of reservations about Rahim. Are you seriously going to tell me he had no ulterior motive behind the "White boys just don't get it" speech? Of course he did. And then he had the gall to act all innocent stating he didn't mean to come between Victor and Benji? Of course you did, Mo fo. You know you did and you pretty much admitted it when you kissed Victor. I hate it when people throw a rock and hide their hand.
