I think it was ahead of its time in both not having a campaign and technology for the time. It also feels kind of scummy on Microsoft’s part. Like they were worried about competition with halo and went out of their way to cut shadow run off at the knees. Overall I think if the game was remade in 2023 it would do very well.

Shadowrun was too ahead of its time. I even remember commenting back in the day “cross platform? multiplayer only??” This was back when a ton of multi-game spanning multiplayer console only shooters were coming out with great singleplayer stories with better polish.

Game for windows was nightmare fuel. I remember not being able to play dead rising 2 because the game wanted my parents to give their authorisation ... I was 20 at the time, wasn't even living with parents, and my parents never cared about me playing violent games in the first place !!! Who thought it was a good idea to turn parental control on by default, I had to spend like an hour online reading guide just I so could play the game I bought. EVERY game I bought that was on game for windows bugged at some point, it's one of the most annoying software ever made, I've never talk to single person who liked it. And the worst part was that people who pirated their game didn't have to deal with it, pirate get the best experience and idiots consumers like me have to deal with microsoft broken software that felt like a malware at time.
I know I'm just ranting but seeing game for windows being mentioned give me PTSD.

    • @ganjaman59650

lmao dead rising 2 was years after that, it was still garbage but the main problem of shadowrun 360vspc was mouse vs gamepad, basically it was the first gfwl game , and the only one that worked as attented, dead rising 2 was a nightmare tho, but it's nothing related to this.
After shadowrun they got crossplay was an unbalanced failure and was never going to be a success for a fps like that at MS and they just stopped any support of it(like 2 months after launch really), wich lead to GFWL being a fucking nighmare since it was not supported almost just after launch but still used for years! ( i bet just to maximise xbox 360 games sell since pc port didnt worked, it also negated pirating of games since even if you buyed it the game didnt work on pc!!!(even if cracked you still have to use gfwl you see wich negated lan mode and in some case case was so a pain you just gived up even after cracking the game) so clever!)
It mean legal users of the game get fucked in the ass,so just pirate those games.

  • @Cooperal
    @Cooperal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +46

This was one of my most memorable letdowns in all games. The magic/tech/race mechanics all interacted with one another in meaningful ways. For example you could buy the healing tree and then also buy gust so that you can propel the seed to distant teammates before it pops. Or use gust to counter players that try to escape in mist form. Resurrection and teleporting also fit right in.
Also! Also! It had a fantastic callout system that was well ahead of its time! Using the 360 D-pad you could communicate fully voiced messages that would alter depending on the context. At the tap of a button you could audibly report something to your team like "3 enemies, tunnels" because you had 3 enemies in your sight while pointing at the only tunnel on the map. They were doing it before Apex Legends and the other BRs caught up.
It was just so poorly handled. There are two extra little footnotes that I think were missing from this video:
    1. Shadowrun also had an invitation only beta which was originally announced to take place in North America, Europe and possibly one other large region. This beta did go on for some time, incrementally inviting more players week after week. However they were only inviting NA users and it wasn't until a very late stage that they ended up declaring that the beta would not end up leaving North America at all, losing themselves some much needed publicity.
    2. When Shadowrun first released Microsoft attempted to enforce the Xbox LIVE subscription fee on PC players. Since PC gamers have forever been accustomed to endlessly playing their multiplayer games (except MMOs) at no extra cost this obviously turned off a lot of people. Especially since not everybody had a 360 to make proper use out of the subscription. Microsoft did end up making a U-turn on this but too little too late.

Shadowrun does not belong in a CP2077 type game, it deserve the divinity OS2 or Pillars of Eternity 2 treatment, shadowrun as a concept needs to stay isometric and turn based. The universe of shadowrun is too specific. Cyberpunk works in a real time open world because the original rpg is relatively free flowing whereas shadowrun is strict and mechanics focused, especially due to decking. A true decking build makes a character near useless when not dealing with computers, this means youd need party support, but you cant control them in real time if youre decked. So isometric it stays.

The license is an absolute clusterfuck. The company that owns the license is a bit of an absentee owner and the company that leases the tabletop and fiction elements of the license is a shitshow (one of the executives embezzled close to $800,000 and cooked the books to try and hide it. He's still with the company). Also while the IP is overall pretty neat there are definitely some elements that would get serious pushback today if it was given a wider audience (though admittedly a lot of more recent material published has tried to distance itself from things like 'Orks/Trolls are the black people fox news tells you to be afraid of' or the... interesting portrayals of modern Native American ethnostates). The best Shadowrun content I can recommend is the HBS RPGs (Shadowrun: Returns, Dragonfall, and Hong Kong) and maybe some of the old novels (Burning Bright is available as an e-book from barnes and noble and it's one of the best)

A beam gun was basically a quake railgun that 2-3 hit kills anything at any range, shooting healing rockets at your feet was your second pick gun until it got nerfed. It's frustrating to see it all wash away because of publishers and IP rights. If re-released under right care on Steam, this game could still host a solid competitive scene. This game should've built up more on the a-symmetrical design and big open maps.
The main reason to it's failure in reception, I believe, was that at the time paying a full game price for a multiplayer shooter was quite unheard of (on console atleast). You had games like Halo/COD that still had a story slapped on. Add in the fact that for the tabletop Shadowrun community, the idea of a Shadowrun shooter was appaling, only made to catch a commercial trend.

    Some notes:
    - Shadowrun actually recently released its 6th edition, the third under CGL (Catalyst Games Lab) to mixed reception from the community (in all fairness the issue of the huge amount of things you CAN do in SR always lead to SR being a very crunch heavy system)
    - Harebrained Schemes, the studio behing SRR, SRDF and SRHK, was recently aquired by Paradox Interactive, a publisher known to put ridiculous amounts of DLCs into their games, Battletech being the first (or at least one of the first) that was developed under the Paradox banner already featuring a 49,99 € season pass as well as two DLCs (the digital deluxe content and the shadow hawk pack) that are not part of the pass, making me less than optimistic about the future of the IP in terms of video games
    - Shadowrun COULD'VE worked as a shooter if they would've created it as an urban brawl (a sport within the world of shadowrun in which two teams basically go for real life CTF - including the shooting)

I had a lot of fun with Shadowrun on the 360, but I tended to gravitate towards teamwork oriented multiplayer games. You emphasized the Halo and Counterstrike influences and could only find sources from 2007 - in sure many have been lost to time - but there was earlier coverage and forum rumors that compared it to Team Fortress, or even chess, which is more apt.
Though the game's population was small, most everybody had a mic in those days, and you got to know some of the regular players. Another one of favorites from the era, From Software's Chromehounds, had a similarly small population of friendly, mic'ed up players. A team-based game where you built your Hound - a mech, really - to fill certain roles on the battlefield. Each match had your team capturing towers around the map, with a unique feature that neighboring towers were required to maintain communication between players. Communication was important because you needed players to act as spotters - calling out distances and coordinates - for the guy on your side with artillery. The enemy team could send fast Hounds to flank and sever communications, or a player with the commander module installed could bridge the gap between towers. Chromehounds was really unique, and it would be neat to see if you could dig up any footage and discuss the game.

@Get in the van I have candy Let me lay it out REALLY clearly. Both are great games for their day, but for different reasons. What made Counter Strike great? The community. The ability to create boards, and get weird in one of the first really good online FPS. What made Shadowrun great? The gameplay mechanics they added on top of the Counterstrike formula. The magic and the tech. An elf blocking bullets, someone teleporting in from above you in a sealed room. The ability to see people through walls. It added a whole new dynamic to the FPS genre that hadn't been there before, where it wasn't just a flat plain with some obstacles to block bullets.

I loved that game,,,then few patches threw the balance all over the place and then it was left unsupported and the playerbase started to slowly fade away, atleast that was my experience when I played.

    Loved this game.
Played the heck out of the demo and then bought it years ago. Almost bought it after watching this video to get the nostalgia out, I just can’t imagine there’s anyone playing. Wish they would remake this one.

We actually had a dedicated community going until roughly 2017, we even had 20 players fly to Santa Ana Esports Arena in January 2017 to do a LAN tournament. The game finally became backwards compatible around 2018 but the servers were shutdown eventually

I think you nailed it. Playing pro in this game for many many years, I absolutely loved the game, the most competitive title with the steepest learning curve I had ever played. As with most businesses/ventures that fail, timing. Launching right before Halo 3, and asking $60 was tough. Best $60 I have ever spent though.

    • @darthXreven
      @darthXreven 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

one series I'd like to see die is COD.....but that's beside the point....
      death of a series?
      Strike
      Road Rash
Need For Speed [might still be going but it's a dead IP in all the ways that matter, there's been no real innovation/advance since Carbon despite all the entries since that game]
      Onimusha
Halo [we all know Infinite is gonna suck cus 343 is still on it]
Fabe [travesty of a loss really, too underrated]
      Syphon Filter
      Metal Gear Solid
      Castlevania
      ----
there's tons od IP to do death of a series on lol
at a glance Strike died due to mismanagement as always and poor marketing and a IP name change
RR died cus they ran the IP into the ground...mismanagement
Fable died cus they progressed the timeline too fast and it stopped being about what it started as....
Syphon Filter died cus the one PS2 entry flopped then the 2 PSP entries also failed to do anything mismanagement plus the third game shoulda been a PS2 game cus it came out right as PS2 was being released eh
and Castlevania straight up mismanagement and the lead dev left FUCKONAMI

Back in 2009 was contacted by someone from their studio for a huge art poster commission since they were having a huge 20 years celebration party for the game, something that according to their level of quality and details request it would've take me at least a week of work. And they offered me $80. I told them for that money I would rather draw them some stick figures on a napkin.
