    Great video! The 40 acres and a mule Kendrick references throughout the album is what each former enslaved person was promised at the end of the Civil war, but were never given

    • @collinbeal
      @collinbeal 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +13

      And Kendrick is likely descended from slaves, as his parents moved to the West Coast from Chicago, which was an important hub in the Great Migration. Because former slaves were persecuted and didn't receive reparations, they still existed as an underclass of society with invisible manacles, and Kendrick is one of the very few lucky descendants to have a skill that allowed him to escape from that generational poverty, which gives him the perspective to write such insightful and emotionally intelligent music.

    Kendrick went to Africa in 2014, which inspired the making of this album.

    • @bobmcclure7495
      @bobmcclure7495 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

      Momma through You Ain't Gotta Lie "takes place in Africa", with him coming back to Compton for a live performance of i. In Mortal Man, he references Nelson Mandela too. Kendrick got a lot of inspiration and understanding by visiting his jail cell while in Africa.

    So for the song These Walls, you recall how one of Kendrick's friends gets killed at the end of Good Kid Maad City? Well Kendrick was rapping about using his newfound fame to sleep with the murderer's girl while he's in jail and the song is him abusing his powers so that the murderer is hurt having to listen to that song

    • @Davy904
      @Davy904 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      What I love about this is when you get to the next song “u” it’s him crumbling under the guilt of his sins, and falling apart because he feels like walked away from his morals. After “u” comes Alright, a song about excepting that we’re not perfect:
      “I'm fucked up, Homie, you fucked up, But if God got us then we gon' be alright”
      It’s great story telling!

    Hope you eventually get to Untitled Unmastered, an album released a year after To Pimp a Butterfly featuring a collection of demos that were made during the recording sessions of TPAB. While it is a compilation album with no underlying theme throughout, it still features amazing songs, some of which are the best in his whole catalogue.

    U is basically a depressed Kendrick with all his failures hunting him, then he turned to Alcohol (what was when you hear the sound of him drinking and bottle clacking sounds) then all his inner thoughts started coming out then in started having a conversation with himself in front of the mirror. the beginning (with the Spanish House Keeper) of the song is actually everything that happened after he got drunk and passed out.... (My interpretation)

    'I' was actually released as a single to mixed reviews because it was too poppy for people. So in the album version he made it sound like a Live Performance with the "Freestyle" at the end. It was not an actual Live version tho :D Also if you change the B in Butterfly to C in Caterpillar the album title changes from 2PAB to 2PAC !!!

    Yes he references many things on good kid but most notably the killing of his friend. In these walls he is talking to the killer of his friend in the third verse, after describing having sex with the killers baby momma. Also in u he references section 80 and how he played Keisha’s song for his sister but she still got pregnant as a teen. He also references not visiting his friend who was shot in the first verse of sing about me. He was on tour and instead of coming back home he just face timed, thinking he’d survive. and the guy ended up dying

      _GNX_ has tenuous threads, similar to _Section 90;_ I think they're both mixtapes to Kendrick, as he refers to _GKMC_ as his first album. I'm holding out hope that _GNX_ was to ride his wave of success, and that he's currently hard at work on a more conceptual album: not that it was a bad album, but because I am an album listener foremost, so concept albums are more nourishing for me than a collection of bangers.

    Great job, bro. You caught a lot and understood it really well for a first listen. DAMN is next... which won the Pulitzer prize. Take the first few sentences of DAMN literally. Each song is either weakness or wickedness, and they flip flop. The whole album can be played in reverse with a whole new story too, and it's very intentional by kdot. Playing it normally, Kendrick goes from wickedness to weakness, playing it reverse makes him go from weakness to wickedness. Someone dies either way... you'll see.

    "But a rapper with a ghost-writer, what the fuck happened? (Oh no!)
    I swore i wouldn't tell, but most of yall sharing bars like you got the bottom bunk in a two-man cell"
    *-A few months before Meek Mill acusses Drake of using ghostwriters*
    Also a suggestion, it would be cool to see you react to the corresponding The Heart song before each album since they set the tone for the whole thing, so for the DAMN. reaction that would be The Heart Part 4.
