    Can you suggest a ratio between gloss and satin that will rehabilitate the areas that have sunken in yet not make the painting so glossy that you have to shift your viewing position around so that you can see the painting rather than a lot of reflections?

    Can you apply the Gamvar over a painting that has been previously varnished with Windsor Newton Professional Gloss Varnish? Also, over Quick Dry and Re-Touch sprays?

      Hi Penny, it isn't recommended to apply the Gamvar over a gloss varnish. Best results are achieved when using a few thin layers of just Gamvar. It should be fine over re-touch sprays but test a small area first as it will depend how much you have used. Thanks for watching

      @@JacksonsArtSupplies I'm curious as to why, since a gloss finish is effectively an isolation coat?

    Can you use gamvar to varnish a painting done with a water soluble oil like winsor and newton artisan oils?

    • @JacksonsArtSupplies
      @JacksonsArtSupplies  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, so long as the painting is fully dry. Try the fingernail test as described in the video to ensure your painting is fully dry throughout. Thanks for watching :)

    HI. I first applied Gamvar Satin Varnish and I feel it needs more gloss. Can I apply the gloss over the satin?

    • @JacksonsArtSupplies
      @JacksonsArtSupplies  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carmen, thanks for your message - the best result would be to remove the satin with Gamsol and then apply the gloss varnish. You can attempt to put the gloss over the satin but you may be left with a hazy sheen. Like with anything, it's best to test it on a scrap piece of whatever you are working on to see if the finish you get is what you want before committing to a larger piece. Hope this helps and let us know how you get on. Many thanks, Christine

    I have been trying to find information regarding washing my brush after using Gamvar. What should I use to wash my brush?

    • @JacksonsArtSupplies
      @JacksonsArtSupplies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Melody, thank you for your comment and question. So Gamblin recommend wiping as much Gamvar from the brush on paper towels, then washing it thoroughly with soap and water. You can also clean your brush with Gamsol (if you have some of course) but the brush will dry stiff and somewhat tacky - this can be remedied by allowing it to soak for 5-10 minutes in Gamvar the next time you varnish.
      We hope this helps, all the best,
      the Jackson's team.

    My gamvar remains tacky no matter how thin I try to apply. I mixed it with gamsol, mixed it with cold wax, I brushed it on vigorously, even polished it with my own hand to really take off all the extra gamvar, but it remains tacky even after a couple of days. What am I doing wrong?

      Are you pouring it directly on the artwork? Is it multi media, or just one type of paint? Are you using a soft varnish brush? Asking questions because I’ve had the same experience as you every time. I’ve narrowed it down to these issues. Resolved then all and will be attempting another painting tonight.

      Oh and one last thing…I’ve learned that it needs to be thin, probably thinner than you think. I read somewhere that a quarter size (like a the size of a 25 cent piece) covers like a 10”x10” area.

      Little Peanut, it's been a year. I'm just stumbling into this. Did you find an answer and solution to your question?
      I had a similar experience, though I use Gamblin's Galkyd (50/50 mix with Gamsol) to "oil out" an oil painting (a very thin coat). My intent is to then varnish after the oiling out dries. But after 12 days the oiling out is still slightly tacky. And I can't figure out why. I wonder if the reasons are similar to your experience.

    can I use Gamvar varnish after I've oiled out my painting?

    • @JacksonsArtSupplies
      @JacksonsArtSupplies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good afternoon Marie, thank you for your question. Gamblin recommend oiling out prior to using Gamvar as it reduces the absorbency of dull paint layers, unifies the painting’s appearance and allows Gamvar to cover more evenly. We hope this helps, all the best.

      Hi Kelly, really it's down to when the varnish has dried (this will depend on how thickly you apply it)

    • @twiseart
      @twiseart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does that for me too whether the painting is two weeks dry or two years dry. Using the brush in circular motions like you’re burnishing the piece is the only way to get it to be even. Also be very very thin with ur varnish you need less than what you think
