I could not figure out where the leak on my dad's Accord was coming from, but I came across this video. It was a pain to get those bolts out but I got the job done. Thanks for sharing this, Bullet.
Just replaced this whole VTEC solenoid, got a brand new one for $30 on eBay. Followed this video, excellent instructions. USE BOX-HEAD WRENCHES they will make your life a lot easier. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video Bullet.. I was able to perform this procedure easily. I followed your video, but I used the Harbor Freight Box End off set wrench 8 pc item 32042. This enabled be to get the bottom bolt off. I had to wiggle and work the wrench as it was tight, but the nut eventually came loose. I also cleaned the EGR since I had to remove it for the VTEC gasket replacement. In addition, I tested the VTEC solenoid per your instructions.. That was excellent testing procedure. I learned something... thanks again.
Thank you Bullet Solano. This video was extremely helpful. I followed the guidance to replace the gaskets in my Honda Accord EX 2002 over the weekend. I took your tip and made a very small wrench by snapping off one side and grinding the broken end smooth on a bench grinder. One tip though: my ring wrench didn't fit over the top nut and I actually had to grind away on the ring to make is slimmer. After about 5 grind/check fit cycles, I ended up making it so it could slip over. After that the rest was easy. Thanks again! Really enjoy your videos.
I kept thinking that my valve cover was bad. I've changed it twice in the last 2 years but it would always leak from the back side. Now I'm starting to think it's this solenoid. Thanks for the video.
To viewers: Make sure to not lose the spring that holds the plunger in place. I dropped mine without noticing, and it made the car go into limp mode. Rewatched Bullet's video, found the spring, and once I installed it, the car ran fine again xD
My wife's 1999 honda accord was leaking 3 quarts in 100 miles (on the passenger side of the car)! I could not see where it was coming from. Changed the distributor O-ring, still leaked. replaced the VTEC to head gasket but it did not look bad. Replaced the gasket under the solenoid. The leak stopped. The gasket under the solenoid was brittle and I suspect leaking. Getting those three bolts for the VTEC to head broken lose was not easy. I used a 10mm boxed in wrench and some uncool methods to get enough leverage on the wrench to get the bottom one lose. (included a hammer, a hatchet and a crowbar). Taking the water inlet off would have made it a lot easier but I did not have the "O" rings and gaskets for it and having to catch the coolant would have been a pain. One more thing, I replaced the PCV valve. A bad one can make seals fail. Thank you for the video!
William Eldon on mine, yes, everytime the oil got low, the engine light came on with a 1259 code which indicates a problem with the vtec. But that went away after the leak was fixed.
My transmission is acting kinda funny.. almost like the VTech takes a second to engage. My brother told me this was the problem, it happened to him. Once again thanks for another great video!!!
Thanks for the video, I used it as a guide to replace my gasket. I did one thing differently, I also removed the oil pressure sensor from the spooler. Once that was done I was able to access the bottom bolt with easily with an offset wrench. Thanks again.
great vid!. love your clean engine bay! my o rings may have been leaking for years. its dirty on that side of the engine, will clean today. shes gettin old with 264,000 miles!
Thank you for your comment , So tell me why do you think that seal would start leaking that bad ? And i`m gonna believe that the motor has to come out to do this , Correct ? Also how can I be sure that`s where the oil is coming from ? I just got done hosing the whole engine the best I could with some degreaser , Gonna let it set till morning , Then hit it with the water hose . Again thank you for your help and keep up the good work on your videos , They have been very helpful in me repairing my car .
Thanks man, tomorrow clean the engine from the bottom and check in between the engine and the transmission is you see oil around that area then you have a bad rear main seal, and the transmission has to come out to do the rear mail seal
Awesome video, really like the way you explain. Did my vtec replacement. Would like to give a small tip, to remove the third bolt under the valve I developed a technique, attached pics to explain. Just in case someone feels difficulty in getting to it, i guess it’s called buddy wrench technique. And don’t even try the bolt without a small 10mm wrench. Cheers..
Hey bro your valve cover gasket replacement video helped me , and yet again this video helped me out also thank you for making these you helped me out so much I really appreciate you making them
Hey Bullet ! I have a problem and i`m hoping you may be able to tell me what to do and look for please. I have a 2000 Honda Accord Coupe 2.3 5 Speed . I just recently replaced the head due to valves being bent from timing belts snapped . I have replaced all belts and seals & water pump . I now have a really bad oil leak coming from the back side of the engine and I can`t seem to find where it`s coming from . I`ve already replaced o ring in dist. , I`ve already taken Solenoid apart and cleaned it 2 times and this time I used gasket sealer , i`ve replaced valve cover gasket and all seals in it alsowith gasket sealer on both sides of gasket from cover to head, I`ve already changed oil and filter, only thing I havn`t changed is oil sending switch but it don`t look like it`s leaking . Any help that you can give will be great ! This car is already taken everything I got to repair . Thank You
@@BulletSolano these repairs would cost a lot of money from most shops! The EGR valve I saw a quote for $500 to do it. Even though the parts cost money.. I would say replace the thermostat, EGR, along with just a new Solenoid. The car would be good for a long time, as long as you own the car.
Laparascopic precision as always, avoiding unneccessarily cracking open gaskets and you found access without even taking out your air intake. Impressive. Do I need to cut my 10mm in half to do it? I have a small one, but I guess I will see.

Hey man! Love your videos..always very helpful...I have a question. I have a p1259 code on my 2000 accord Ex 4cy 2.3l. Could this mess with the EGR. Says I have insufficient flow even tho I just replaced it
Hi, Bullet! I'm trying to find the oem part to that gasket you were referring to that would need replacing if we remove the thermostat housing. I plan to change out the thermostat while I'm doing the solenoid gasket. Would that be called the thermostat case gasket, if so, I see two of them listed for my 98 honda accord 4 cyl, 2.3l: 91312-POA-000? or is it 91312-P0A-000? Do either of them need gasket sealant applied? Thanks a million!

So just replace the shift solenoid? I see some run for $40-60 and I see an "original" solenoid for over $230 can a price make a difference in been original??
Hello bullet my master of accord's, I changed the idle actuator of my honda accord to 5 days and everything worked fine until today I called and the car had those acceleration oscillations again, I checked the car on the Scanner obd hondash and it doesn't work no error, what can i do to regulate this acceleration, is now getting between 1500 to 1800rpm with the car stopped in P or N.
Vikitor Sabino hey bro if you get a cheap part is going on fail, but first check for intake leak or probably the idle air control valve gasket is leaking!! But if the part is cheap get another one with new gasket
My gfs accord coupe loses acceleration after about 4-5k rpm and check engine light showed vtec solenoid as the problem, does it need a replacement or just cleaned and new gasket?
Thank you Bullet. I have the Sony DSC unit.. the predecessor. Mine is 10MP. Your unit is 20MP. After seeing your video, I will upgrade. Hope to get a good deal during November.. thank you again.
Hi bullet, I just bought an accord was driving fine no check engine light until i tried hitting Vtec now i got code p1259. Which is when I found the vtec solenoid is missing its harness. It is connected wire to wire without electrical tape. Is it possible to use electrical tape to connect the vtec solenoid wire to wire? I guess I will find out I'm going to do it right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
@@BulletSolano thanks just wrapped it up.. hopefully its solves the problem. Also when I first bought it the temperature gauge was working but the next day it stopped reading temperature. Dam I feel like I got ripped off. But anyways I put electrical tape on it now im going to test drive... if that doesn't work then I will take it apart clean it and test it like u did. Thanks for responding.. just subscribed!!
@@BulletSolano well I test drove and floored it... no check engine light I'm crossing my fingers. Now on to the temperature gauge. Do u know If it is around same area?
Hey Bullet ! How have you been ? I have another question for you if you can answer it please ? It`s about the same 2000 Honda Accord . I have found my oil leak and wasn`t any of the things we thought it was . It was at the oil port that`s on the back of the block between the knock sensor and the oil sending switch . Anyways , as I was trying to reset the head on the dial pins , somehow I pulled the metal pipe that runs from the thermostat housing on the back of the block to the other side of the block that the water circulates threw and it bent the flange where the o-ring sits that seals it off . I straighten it out the best I could and replaced the o-ring and took my gasket sealer and filled up the space where the o-ring goes and put it back on then took housing and put a good bead inside where it sits inside . Now , Do you think that will seal it off there so it don`t drip anymore ? Or am I gonna have to replace that pipe ? Man lemme tell ya this damn car is about to drive me nuts ! But I`m slowly fixing all the minor things that`s wrong with it . Anyways , Any help that you can provide will help tremendously ! Also keep up the good work on your videos , Very helpful so far and Thank You Very Much for the help that you have already provided .
Hey man thanks for that, if the pipe is bend but you think is good run with it, but is gonna be up to you!! I think if you replaced it that’s gonna be the best thing but like I said is up to you, and I’m happy that you found the leak
LOL I knew you were gonna say that ! Ok man , Thank You . I hope that it does seal off cuz that`s a pain in da azz . Ok bud , You Have a Great Thanksgiving , I`ll let ya know what happens . @@BulletSolano
Man I see you customize A Honda accord that's cool as hell I have a 2000 and its leaking oil so thank you for the info on finding and fixing. And big ??? "how much did you spend on the customize work on the engine".
Thanks man, I have this car for 7 years now and I think in the engine is only like $1000 but the money in this car is on the suspension and brakes!! Probably all the car including labor I spend around $7000 maybe more
I got the 2 bolts on top of the solenoid off but the guy I got the car from replaced the solenoid and stripped the bottom one it's round I can't get a open end wrench on it or anything else any advice?
Man that’s crazy, you’re gonna have to get creative on that one, and if you can’t get a tool in there probably the best option is to removed the thermostat housing
I have never done that before is it hard I watched your video on how to but you seid it is a pressurized system and you have to bleed it. How do you do that do you do it while the car is running? Do you have to drain all the fluids from the car? Should I buy a o ring befor in case I have to replace it? Sorry for all the questions but you seem to know your stuff that's why I each your videos
No problem, remove the antifreeze then remove the housing and yes you need new gasket, and after the installation put the antifreeze back in the car and in the thermostat housing there is a little bleeder valve to bleed the system.
Your car automatic or manual? Mine's a manual. Was yours throwing a code or are you just replacing it for leak sake? I had to change my rocker arm assembly, and after that I hit the road to make sure all was good. WELL, I was on second or third (manual) and hit it, then the car gave a slight jerk up around 3500-3600 rpm and CEL came on with vtec code. Car drives fine as long as I keep it below 3500 rpm, but I know something needs to be replaced, not sure what. Would you think I need an entire solenoid to be on the safe side or just change the gasket? Your thoughts?
@@BulletSolano several things I love about you and your channel. A) you have a 6th gen accord, not many ppl do B) you fix a lot of things that help me with similar issues. C) you have a very fast response time to questions. I just ordered a remanufactured one, so is basically new, not a 3rd party one, and it was only 30 bucks 😁😁 also, ffr, I seen someone do the same procedure, except instead of the small wrench he used an offset 10mm one, which I think I may do but I do have a small 10mm as well
The bottom bolt below the oil pressure sensor is awful I can't get it off. I got a stubby 10mm and an 10mm offset wrench and it's making the tool slip. I also took the sensor off to have more room.
Hey Bullet, I bought a 2002 Honda Accord 2.3L VTEC about 2 months ago, long story short.. Hey how are you, P0135 you need oxygen sensor P0700 you have problems with the transmission controls P01750 Possible causes Faulty Range Position Switch Range Position Switch harness is open or shorted Range Position Switch circuit poor electrical connection
Did you have problems with vtec? If not your problem is something else, probably spark plugs, cables, rotor and distributor cap can fix that, or cleaning the egr passage, sometimes your fuel pump is the problem
Check for resistance on the connector and put power to the solenoid to see if it opens, but if the car doesn’t pass 5K rpm it means that the solenoid is bad or dirty or probably you have low oil, most likely the solenoid is bad
I got a quick question compita. My valve cover says vtec but i just have a plate where the solenoid should be, engine is f23a1. Why is that? Its a stick shift btw1998

i've noticed there's an leak coming from somewhere but i'm not sure. i'm kinda pretty sure it's low oil problems
A homie way off subject but is it safe to drive with my cylinder position sensor in default I'm getting a code p1381?
Yes but not for long, get it fix
@@BulletSolano I'm not too mechanically inclined so I probably wouldn't be able to do it myself?
Ok bro just take it to a shop
Did your management light come on and it was misfiring ?
No, I did this to show how to fixed this issue
Clean looking engine man thanks for the video
Thanks, No problem
Which wire in the plug of solenoid do i need to tap the positive wire from battery??
It doesn’t matter
I still get the same code and hesitation at high speeds. Can it be something else?
My gfs accord coupe loses acceleration after about 4-5k rpm and check engine light showed vtec solenoid as the problem, does it need a replacement or just cleaned and new gasket?
Check the valve maybe you need a new one, put the cables to your battery to see if the valve works, if not replace it
Bullet Solano should I go ahead and order one just in case it is broken?
Check it first to save some money
What are the torque specs? Too tight and you will crush the new gasket flat.
8.7 ft/lbs
Does your honda distributer leak?
No, is new
Bullet, what camera did you use? the clarity is awesome. thank you
+arielban1 thanks Bro for all my videos I use a Sony RX100. I live that camera is very good
Thank you Bullet. I have the Sony DSC unit.. the predecessor. Mine is 10MP. Your unit is 20MP. After seeing your video, I will upgrade. Hope to get a good deal during November.. thank you again.
+arielban1 no problem Bro. I was thinking on changing the camera but I think I’m good with it
Should i drain the engine oil before taking the VTEC solenoid ..?
No you don’t have to just put a rag under the solenoid before you removed it
hey, did replacing the solenoid make your shifts feel smoother?
Is the same
Hi bullet, I just bought an accord was driving fine no check engine light until i tried hitting Vtec now i got code p1259. Which is when I found the vtec solenoid is missing its harness. It is connected wire to wire without electrical tape. Is it possible to use electrical tape to connect the vtec solenoid wire to wire? I guess I will find out I'm going to do it right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
Hi bro, is missing the connector? If so yes use electrical tape
Ok man thanks, and bleed the system to see if the car has bubbles on the system
@@BulletSolano well I test drove and floored it... no check engine light I'm crossing my fingers. Now on to the temperature gauge. Do u know If it is around same area?
The bleeder valve is next to the vtec solenoid valve
Thanks , So if this seal I`m trying to do now don`t work , I`m gonna have to replace that tube ? correct ?@@BulletSolano
Yes if it seals leave it but if you see a leak you gonna have to replace it
LOL I knew you were gonna say that ! Ok man , Thank You . I hope that it does seal off cuz that`s a pain in da azz . Ok bud , You Have a Great Thanksgiving , I`ll let ya know what happens . @@BulletSolano
Thanks man you to happy Thanksgiving to you and your family
My bolts were very hard to get off . They were over tight , had to make a 10 mm socket and a hand breaker bar to fit lol
Probably all the car including labor I spend around $7000 maybe more
What intake manifold is that? Aftermarket or stock?
Aftermarket
I got the exact same car. Full bolt on besides the manifold, which one is it? Ive been looking forever
😂😂 sorry man I was thinking you said cold air Intake, that’s the stock manifold
No problem, remove the antifreeze then remove the housing and yes you need new gasket, and after the installation put the antifreeze back in the car and in the thermostat housing there is a little bleeder valve to bleed the system.
th-cam.com/video/iSCWnE4UWNs/w-d-xo.html
What is the gasket I need to replace is it the thermostat gasket or the gasket for the thermostat housing?
Auto, and you need a new valve
@@BulletSolano thx
@@BulletSolano also, how do you know that? I can drive just fine under 3k rom, or should I just not drive it?
Your welcome
@@BulletSolano several things I love about you and your channel.
A) you have a 6th gen accord, not many ppl do
B) you fix a lot of things that help me with similar issues.
C) you have a very fast response time to questions.
I just ordered a remanufactured one, so is basically new, not a 3rd party one, and it was only 30 bucks 😁😁 also, ffr, I seen someone do the same procedure, except instead of the small wrench he used an offset 10mm one, which I think I may do but I do have a small 10mm as well
My 98 Honda accord won't start. I have replaced the battery and alternator and still haven't got it to start what could be the problem?
Check your main relay if that one works and the fuel pump is working your distributor needs to be replace
th-cam.com/video/RupSTUqg-bQ/w-d-xo.html
Hey Bullet, what kind of wire did you use to test it exactly? It looks like one of those aligator clip things. Thanks.
Yes
The bottom bolt below the oil pressure sensor is awful I can't get it off. I got a stubby 10mm and an 10mm offset wrench and it's making the tool slip. I also took the sensor off to have more room.
@@BulletSolano Update, got it off. It was just stripped really bad I had to take a hammer and chisel to it 😆. I eventually was able to turn it out.
Hey Bullet, I bought a 2002 Honda Accord 2.3L VTEC about 2 months ago, long story short.. The mechanic said rebuild I am getting codes
P0700 HONDA - Automatic Transmission Fault
P1750 HONDA - Mechanical Problem in Hydraulic Control System of A/T Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid
P0135 HONDA - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1
Any history that you've head with these codes or the hard shifting, That can help me?
Hey how are you, P0135 you need oxygen sensor
P0700 you have problems with the transmission controls
P01750 Possible causes
Faulty Range Position Switch
Range Position Switch harness is open or shorted
Range Position Switch circuit poor electrical connection
With how many Newtonmeters are the screws tightened ?
9 lt-lb or 12.20 Nm
I Replaced it bro but it still bogs when I’m accelerating ?
Did you have problems with vtec?
If not your problem is something else, probably spark plugs, cables, rotor and distributor cap can fix that, or cleaning the egr passage, sometimes your fuel pump is the problem
How do I know if I have it put back together correctly ??
Check for leaks
Thank you! 🤝🤝
How can I know if my vtech solenoid works in my 98 Honda Accord 2.3 ...it doesn’t rev pass 5 rpms
Check for resistance on the connector and put power to the solenoid to see if it opens, but if the car doesn’t pass 5K rpm it means that the solenoid is bad or dirty or probably you have low oil, most likely the solenoid is bad
@@BulletSolano my oil is full n justed finished doing timing belts n water pump
I got a quick question compita. My valve cover says vtec but i just have a plate where the solenoid should be, engine is f23a1. Why is that? Its a stick shift btw1998
Someone didn’t like vtec kick in yoo
See if the connector is there, and get a new solenoid
Damn bro ur on it. Ait ill check in the morning thanks
No problem bro
good video now i know how to change that you helped me change my thermostat on my car that was made easy can you do a video on how to change the transmission solenoids on that same year honda accord i have a 2000 and i just wanted to know how to do it thanks
Ok no problem
In my hood where you removed the hoses I don’t have the same setup and it’s a 98. Where you’re big orange hose is mine is connected to the other ones under it and essentially I don’t have a hose where you’re orange hose is I only have the set under that
My setup is different because I have a cold air intake
Bullet Solano ahhhhh ok I’m not too familiar with it but thanks man the video helped regardless
No problem
Do you change it everyday?, clean it well it wont be leaking anymore :).
Hello me again haha so how do I fix the ECM relay fuse? Stupidly I tried taking it out and I messed up.
ECM relay? Or fuel main relay?
Hi
@@BulletSolano ecm 50amp turns ignition. I got the code 1768 again and the computer code p700 so I was trying to reset that and found it chipped. I don't know nothing about cars and don't have anybody to help that's why I keep coming to you cuz you and one other guy only know what you're doing so is there a way just to replace a piece of a computer or do I have to replace the whole thing?
You have to replace the computer
Este solenoide es el que causa que mi Accord no pase de las 3000RPM?
Si ese
Do you need to drain the oil ?
You don’t have to
@@BulletSolano thank you
No problem
Hey bullet how's it going i have a question man i need to replace the whole solenoid can i do it the same way you replaced the gasket?
Hey Chris yes if you replacing the solenoid just do the 3 bolts on the bottom
so i don't really have to remove anything else to get to it right? It's because my check engine light came on and i have to switch the part
Did you check your oil level?
Sometimes when oil is low you can get that code
And just do what I did it the video to get to the 3 bottom bolts
Just did mine along with the distributor, now no oil leaks .
Nice
What's the part number for small gasket that goes on top
