I decided to take up the "Killer Dutch" by Levy Rozman's recommendation. Gotham Chess's brief introduction to the Dutch defense was very informative for me. I learned the absolute minimum about this system there, and decided to play it, with surprisingly good results. This video is a perfect next step for me!
its definitely a weird opening but i tried it in a few blitz games and was surprised at how effective it is. you´ve got to be very careful about letting white play an early d5 or e4 though! Cheers, Will
Well , here it is , over 2 years since I purchased this dvd . first I gotta say that of all the many books and dvd's and internet studies that I've worked through , this was the most enjoyable of them all . this Simon Williams really knows how to teach ! I have worked (funned) through this dvd many times . everything he teaches actually works in my games . I have used this defenc(s)e in hundreds of my games now . I've had some brilliant wins and some horrible losses , but way more wins . very few draws , but all the games were exciting . He shows all these neat rules : Don't allow the e-file to be opened or the e6 pawn gets weak ,meet e4 with ....e5 or ....f4 etc. this defense has it all ! tactics , positional play and k-side attacks . The first few months playing it , I played 1....e6 cause I was chicken to play 1....f5 because of all the tricky gambit lines . but then I bit the bullet and learned how to play against the gambits . now I welcome the gambits and it's less work than learning the French defence . I have just 3 more words . CHECK AND MATE !!!!!

I like how the Dutch isolates the white King into 4 columns on the board with most of the key white pieces locked off from defending the king in a meaningful way.
wow. by sticking one opening each for d4 and e4, the Dutch and the sicilian, my rating has greatly improved and my games are more exciting due to the unbalanced positions created from both openings.
i just ordered the dvd since i learned a lot from this video . the only thing i don't like is when they show the real board . it's very distracting . i guess i'll just have to learn to look the other way . i also own "the accelerated dragon" by GM Perelshteyn.great dvd!
In the non-fianchetto system, does the rule still apply where if white plays e4, black must be able to respond with ...e5 or alternatively ...f5? Also, does the rule apply then that black's main goal is till to prevent white from playing e4? Or have the primary goals shifted and to what?
I think the idea is: rook x h3, pawn x h3. Queen x h3 check, king g1 (forced). and knight g4, which sets up a mating net. And the f pawn can`t capture the knight because it opens up the bishop diagonal and allows mate on g2
This is a fantastic video and in fact much more helpful than your average chess lecture (many chess videos get bogged down in endless variations without a real sense of the "feel" of the position coming through). I had no intention of doing anything but watching this video but I am now considering buying the series. I am a Bird's opening player with white and would like to make my repertoire more consistent -- hence the idea of taking up the Dutch.
wow that was great, its much much easier to remember a few key rules like that than 100s of concrete variations ! thankyou for the advice i think im gonna try the dutch, its always been attractive to me because you dont waste a move unblocking the f pawn with the knight on f6 !

Never tried playing the classical Dutch, seems fairly solid. Simon Williams is very good at explaining ideas and the reasons behind the moves. After trying this "Killer Dutch" I'm seeing it's pretty much KIA/DOA after: 1. d4 f5 2. Nf3 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. Bxf6 Bxf6 6. e4 Which totally beats the whole "don't let them play e4" and "answer e4 with ...e5" business.
I have one question concerning the 1. d4 f5 2. c4, since the opponent doesn't start fianchettoing his bishop on the king side, should we take the initiative and fianchetto our light squared bishop first?

Alexander Brandt okay nevermind I get it! just in case you are still looking for ideas, knight e4 is to be played before The Rook gets to E1, what he really means and if white captures the pawn black captures back forcing the White Knight to a passive Square and solidifying black Center!
your supporting my chess ! lots of openings are good because if you get an idea on key possitional ideas, when you transpose or go off book, the more possitions you know the better you can borrow from different theory, not just that but if your white you dont get to choose the opening so you need to know at least the main ones for d4 or e4 ! pref both !
I've never tried the classical dutch before, but now I might just have to pull it out. Now I just have to find someone other than myself who plays d4. Not easy.
Well explained, very absorbing. however I don't think it matters what opening you play, its all about you as a person, natural talent or talent that's been learnt. You just have to be the better player. Suppose Simon had black here vs Bobby Fischer as white. Who would win? Simon, er I mean Fischer. Having said that I agree with Simon that this opening will be good vs opponent of similar strength. That's my take on the subject anyway.
Very good explanation. One thing that I see in your game against that top GM, he brought back the white queen to e1 trying to exchange queens. The bishop on b7 is important; however, it does not seem very relevant because by going Qxe1 you have a double check that he could not defend. Is this appropriate? Wil wait for your comments...

After playing the slav, semislav and variations for like a million times i will gladly try to improve on this system, if anybody does like me i would also advice the clerandon court system as a weapon, especially in blitz games this can be very funny and quickly get even very dangerous for white!! At least you should get a time advantage if you studied hard... Same as my openings as black. Worth trying the benoni against d4 too. And Dutch can work against English opening too.

At 12:20 Bb4 is not required. the e4 break can come with a plan of d7-d5 black will have a good game

coffincornered83 Many plans are similar to bird's opening. So dutch could be fine for you.

stonewall dutch is really fun when you attack king in corner constantly with queen , rook, bishop, knight and sometimes pawn
