One time payment is not really my thing. But i’ve seen folks from Basecamp reintroduce one-time payment for their software so if you can make the model work for you financially, why not?

I had the same results - placing each solution type into their relative grade. The only thing I’d add about hardware is the much greater costs of development. The prototype versus MVP distinction applies here. A device like a Ring doorbell could be prototyped cheaply with an Arduino. Prove the concept and get the additional funding for a more polished MVP.
