    Randy's amp was a 1959 Super lead but it was modified at the Factory for him. They claim the mod was to give the amp more gain. Despite this I've personally heard an actual 1959RR model and it actually lacks gain. All of Randy's gain came from an MXR distortion Plus. The amp itself had gain but it was minimal. He used the MXR and dimed both controls. He also used a Gibson LP Custom as other comments already stated. The determining factor in his sound was an MXR 10 band EQ....that is really how his sound was shaped. Great tutorial though!

      I also heard he ran the mxr through the hot/gain (on the 1959 white high gain amp) side instead of the clean channel. I tried this and it sounded like a fire breathing dragon and I had to be 30ft away from amp or the feedback would make my head explode.

      @@ThomannsGuitarsBasses He also didn't use matching cabs with his amp. He replaced the Celestions in his cabs with Altec speakers.
      The tone he had was a lot more saturated than this, & of course had a light chorus effect on it. The album engineer described his set up in quite a lot of detail in an old Guitar World issue.
      You can get a better idea of his tone by listening to the guitar isolated from the rest of the track th-cam.com/video/hujIRwVlo4I/w-d-xo.html

      91RiffRaff but in the solo there is tremolo and his Les Paul didn’t have a tremolo

    • @91RiffRaff
      @91RiffRaff 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Johns Music And Guitar actually no tremolo in the song. He even played this song live with a Les Paul. There is no lick or passage in the solo where you can hear a trem bar

      91RiffRaff oh my bad I thought I heard one in the solo he must have just been bending the string to make it sound like a tremolo

    This is considered "beginners riff", but you hear it, you know immediatly, if it is played by beginner ;)
    I was also searching like crazy, how to replicate that tone ... now I have answer ;).

    Could we have in near future Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath?

    • @monteself6826

      I just made a patch on my Zoom G5 for Paranoid going straight into PA the modeled amp is and Orange which Tony can be seen using in the earlier years, I was tyring to get the "Lead Tone" down in the patch and had to settle with the zoom effect called "BitCrush" This effect creates a lo-fi sound. ANYWAY as I was messing around with the effect off I could hear tones that sounded like Planet Caravan so I started playing it and it sounds really close, you probably aren't going to go out and buy a G5 but just to let you know. you probably arent going to go out and buy an Orange or Laney Amp either lol.
      PS I came to this link looking for Randy's tone for Crazy Train, I think I got a better/closer tone than he did here using my G5, but I actually had to go to a video that has his Isolated track to hear it real good.

    • @stanislavmigra
      @stanislavmigra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@monteself6826 coooooool. G5 is absolute legend here and (not only) for this model, lot of people here refers to MultiFX units as Zooms.
      Like: "Have you seen the new Zoom from Line6 called Helix?"
      PS: I actualy might go out and buy vintage Laney. But loads if the are like crap made in kitchen with fork.

    same here I ran the same amp at home all on 10 with a mxr dist plus pedal through the hot channel believe it or not and the feedback was so bad i had to be 3 rooms down with guitar and I finally almost nailed his tone. I was amazed so the stories are true that he ran both on 10 and a mxr dist pedal through a marshall 1959. I only ran it for enough the play the song one time through.My neighbors probably were not to happy nor was my wife. But that the closest I got to sounding like him. So for those people trying it is very hard to emulate his sound with lower or even medium volume.

    I don’t thing Randy used his Jackson v on crazy train, I don’t think he got it until after the blizzard of Oz tour
    And you should’ve use a dsl 20 and an mxr 10 band eq

    Randy used in studio a Lexicon delta T which has four delays. They went in & out for first dual 1st, 2nd dalay but going through other half side in & out totalling 4 delays which are being cascaded in very tight milliseconds which is best heard on no bone movies and crazy train. Can't afford the Lexicon delta then the lexicon primetime dual delay which you split out to separate cabs and do same in tight milliseconds apart to achieve that buzz ambient tone.
    Use mxr distortion at 45% so the actual strings are heard cause Marshall amp will be used through a power soak to achieve full Marshall being pushed. What is key in randy's live tone is resonant flang sound but without the common swoosh cycle as most have so it'll be old vintage delay racks that have the resonant flange i.a. AMS-DMX, any lexicon prime time, Yamaha E1010, delta lab DL-2, but in studio the AMS-DMX was used, keep in mind it was too expensive back then to take one on the road so the Yamaha E1010 during that period is close to it for it has the very dark resonant flange on the lower button. By combining the distortion to the Yamaha both produce a rich thickness to the distortion without muddying by over distortion, hence the flange.
    Mostly all guitar heroes never reveal their tone secrets for good reason lol. Example that everyone has done randy's Marshall amp, mxr +, but still can't get it. Secret is old delays that have very low milliseconds time 0+ or even better 0- delay time.
    These vintage delays produce reverb,chorus,delay,echo just by moving from negative to positive values in time.
    So give no bone movies a very close listen with eyes closed and hear there are 4 cascading delays in tight milliseconds at the tone but enough to sound as one guitar so that specific rack delays make it possible and not by any delay pedal. Hope you try it out.
