What a gorgeous voice that is in the beginning.
powerhouse is amazing this year
It was an honor passing out the newspapers at all the competitions. GO BURROUGHS!!!1
My favorite year is still the "Alice in Wonderland" themed year, however this one was great. Love watching these full Powerhouse performance videos on this channel!
thank you so much!
It was a lot of fun seeing this at both Burroughs and SoCal...the gold explosion is incredible. Great job on another amazing set of shows, guys! :)
13:43 is amazing!!
I saw all four shows this past weekend. It gets better with each presentation. Next stop Broadway!
i had to watch it a good three times to take it all in. amazing!
watching this live last night at hart was amazing
Everyone looking at this video still should just stop now and search:
John Burroughs High School Powerhouse performs at SoCal Competition 2012
Burroughs always has a rough start and their best performance isnt at pop show.. Its always at Chula! :)
before i watched this, i had a feeling they'd do dig by incubus. i heard the intro guitar and instantly knew they were doing that song. that fools' gold medley is definitely my favorite girls number from the shows i've seen this year. i know the guys come in, but i still consider it a girls number
This video made it to the Huffington Post site as part of an article on show choirs in America. Powerhouse was #1!
@MrElvadine Good grief, no there isn't any autotune on the video. The audio is straight from the soundboard, so it's more direct than a general camcorder recording would be. I'll just let them take your comment as a compliment. :)
Their last songs are "Home" from Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and "Here Comes the Sun" from The Beatles!
WAY better than In Sync's "dance team"
Now this is SHOW choir, ladies and gentlemen.
A show choir is a group of people who combine choral singing w/ dance movements, sometimes within the context of a specific idea or story. Plus Show choirs origins are from broadway. As long as there's choreo and vocals consistent through out the set, they could be judged by the books. Because they're not traditional does' t mean they aren't show choir. They are just a contemporary show choir keeping the traditional fundamentals but just adding depth to it making a set more intriguing i think.
I approve.
this is cool, the costumes rule (fire, water, trees, gold pans) and the show is great. What it lacks though is the actual Show Choir aspects of the show (dancing and singing)
Where do they get all the money?! I wish there were more guys in Florida that liked show choir. My show choir only has 30 people :/
I do not know.... I must have been tired
@birdlikebirds Lacking singing and dancing? What video were you watching?
I understand that's your opinion but the reason you may think that is because you cant hear it that well Powerhouse is very loud and I was at their show there so amazing and they win alot and they performed on oprah and hong kong there show was so amazing unless you have seen their shows live you shouldn't judge....sorry
I don't even know my response....WOW.
Who choreographed "This Is How I Disappear"?
In what way?
17:05 Well, everything is allright, our son is dead but, everything is all-right!
I thought so too at first but they are not. This is a very Burroughs styled show. Burroughs is like Cirque Du Soleil: they tells stories in more abstract ways like elements and everyone interpreting a single characters feelings where as Burbank is like Broadway: they tell stories in more concrete ways with distinct characters. Plus the era's are almost a century apart in different places w/completely different stories. If it weren't for burroughs 08 burbank would probably still be traditional.
FAME NEW YORK GRAND CHAMPIONS!! :D
Yes it was. Idk i was in a critical mood (probably jealousy) It seems that I caused quite a commotion here though... oops
Which show choir did you perform with?
I don't believe anyone of merit has claimed Burroughs is/was number one? I've had a chance to work with both John Burroughs and Burbank and they are certainly both at the top of the show choir world. Their styles are similar, the dark conceptual Southern California choir. Jen, the artistic director for Burroughs, has said herself that there are years where they will do a show for the art, even when knowing that it won't score well on a judges sheet. They can (and often do) win a GC or first place whenever they want, they along with Burbank, don't need anymore trophies or ranking of their art, but they are progressing the genre of Show Choir which is far more important. Look at InSync 2012, that set was a huge departure from what we, at the time, knew as show choir. The first 4-5 minutes were a mess, some people even thought of it as a joke when it moved into New York and then the dance break... then the lights went out, pitch black, the ultraviolet glow kicked in, Dove multiplied her girls, then the strong tenor/bass unison opposite her solo, and then... the dubstep dropped. I was at every competition you performed that at and saw the same reactions everytime. It was amazing, groundbreaking, and in my personal opinion, Burroughs (or anyone else) has never done anything that progressive. But did it score well? It really didn't. It was better than any professional broadway show I've seen, but on most score sheets the adjudicators fill out, that's not really a category. Maybe it'd score high under visuals and show design, but that is such a small part of the overall score.
I will say I am aware of the time penalty, but that's the sacrifice we have to make in order to ensure the set is of the highest quality. I'd rather have one of my groups get 2nd place and perform their show to perfection rather than sacrifice the quality of the show just to score well and get a 1st place/GC. Also, Burroughs did not win that event, so saying the judges favor them would be unfair. In fact, the choir that did win that event would be one of the groups that many people consider to be the number one choir in the genre right now. If it weren't for a non-compete agreement between Clinton's Attache and that choir, we could see a true competition for the number one spot, unfortunately we will likely not see that happen in the near future while both groups are at their peak. If In Sync wants to be viewed as "#1" then they need to start competing in national competitions at the end of the season when all the choirs are at their peak. As great as Fairfield was for Burbank and Wheaton was for Burroughs, they're not exactly the defining event that Fame Nationals or SCN are.
If any choir can combine a win at one of those national events, along with competing with Los Al or Clinton at a major regional event for the win(at the end of the season), and then people in the community will take notice and consider that group to be #1
Lastly I'll say, props to Burbank High school, Brett, and the VMA for lawyering up against Tresona. The last case was unfortunately settled out of court due to their scare tactics. I can't wait for Greenberg to feel the wrath of Burbank, their lawyers, almost limitless funds of affluent parents. They picked the wrong choir to threaten and I can't wait to see this case go through, it will change Show Choir forever, something Burbank is very good at.
#boycottTresona
............what the heck just happened?
They were good but i found way to much similarities to Burroughs 2010 and some 08.
Emily Depauw.
I prefer traditional show choir
Ok well i'm probably going to catch some grief for this, but let me just start by saying that i've always been a fan of powerhouse; however, I do agree with the poster that said that they lack dancing. This choreography does not stand up to a Dwight Jordan, or Steven Todd show at all. I also believe that this group relies way to heavily on their sets, light shows and costumes to deter from that. Vocals were very good, :) its just not my favorite powerhouse show or show choir for that matter.
My exact feelings! I love Burroughs style, but it's NOT like Burbank.
I don't get why people like to say Burroughs is #1 cause of this set. Burbank highs 2012 set was phenomenal! Broadway level lights, sound, and show and they also beat powerhouse everytime ( except at Hart where we had a time penalty for starting late and the judges there favor Burroughs anyway) but other than that Burbank is honestly #1 they always have been phenomenal and they don't need ridiculous dance breaks to prove it. Don't get me wrong Powerhouse is amazing and I love our rival school cause our city is the best but I feel Burbank is #1
lol
They seem to be copying burbank from last year.
I don't really understand this show....it lacks the genius that the Alice in Wonderland show had. At least it seems that way to me.
Week? You mean like 7 days in a week?

Los Alamitos High school is way better
this is really really boring....
