I'm still learning Abhidhamma. Wow !! Incredible !!!! I have to admit that it is very difficult and different from Sutta Pitaka, but everybody needs to learn it. Learning Abhidhamma is just like learning yourself, and your own mind. You have to be open-minded, learn the history of Abhidhamma, and learn Abhidhamma very attentively then you will realize that Abhidhamma is Buddha's teaching. Buddha's teaching is so wonderful and beautiful. Do not waste your time to hesitate about Abhidhamma. So happy that in this life, I have the opportunity to learn this very beautiful teaching.
I have learn abhidhamma, and after i learn it, i can feel that it direct me to avoid doing everything bad. I think abidhamma is good to learn and it only can feel in your mental attitude. And i am happy with abidhamma, slowly it change my character to become a good one. ❤
Satu, satu, satu. 🙏🙏🙏 Thank you Phra Ajahn. I have spent a number of years studying the Abhidamma, influenced by Thai monk friends who teach Abhidhamma. However, I have now come to a place where I realise that the first 5 Nikayas are the only teachings I believe we can be sure were taught by the Buddha himself. As you say, there is more than a life time of study in those 5 Nikayas. 😁 Luangpor Dhammavuddho makes an interesting statement in relation to this. He mentions that the Asoka pillars clearly state that there are only 5 NIkayas. He uses this as a timeline to see that Abhidhamma, Mahayana and anything other than the first 5, came after Asoka and therefor are not direct teachings of the Buddha. Notr sure what your thoughts are on that sir? 🙏🙏🙏
Ask yourself this question. Are you pursuing the teachings of the Buddha, or are you pursuing the religion called Buddhism? Teachings of the Buddha are found ONLY in the 5 Nikayas and the Vinaya, nowhere else. All else is added onto the religion called Buddhism after the Buddha's parinibbana. Teachings of the Buddha have 2 baskets, not 3. Buddhism has 3 baskets, and many more variations to the baskets with all kinds of dressings and decorations.
Don't be lazy. Try to learn Abhidhamma. If you learn Abhidhamma you will realize the length of your misconception. If you learn Abhidhamma you will realize that it contains the profound philosophy of Buddha's teachings which only Lord Buddha could explain which is the ultimate truth about the mind of the beings, specially humans. The true realization of Buddha's teachings can only be achieved when you understand Abhidhamma. Please don't say it's hard and impossible to understand. Please don't make baseless assumptions that Buddha didn't taught Abidhamma without even productively trying to learn Abhidhamma. Abhidamma, if you learn it with the help of a wise teacher, is not at all hard. In fact it is quite interesting and you will actually feel that your thinking capacity expands as you learn. Abhidamma gave me a better understanding of human mind. It is the very core of Buddha's teachings. In order to prove that you must learn Abhidamma. If you don't learn then you will keep spouting your own misconceptions as your assumptions.
From my admittedly brief experience of Abhidhamma, I can say, at least, that the systemization and framework it provides can be helpful for understanding the suttas. I’m more so aiming at gaining a passing understanding of Abhidhamma with the aim of more fully understanding the sutta pitaka as a whole. It is a relief, however, to hear that Abhidhamma may not be necessary as such; I find it extremely pedantic. 121 types of consciousness, not 122 or 120, but exactly 121? lol.
I could discover some ultimate realities similar to the ultimate realities called Paramartha Dhamma. There are teachings about Quantum Phyiscs in Buddhism: The four Great Elements, Pure Eight Elements (Suddattaka), emerged 24 matter elements with the four great elements. 52 immaterial elements (mental factors/qualities). 51 moments in matter zone. 3 moments in mind. 17 mind moments in a process of mind. I could verify those teachings mathematically. So I'm pretty much sure that they are teachings of the Buddha. Also, there are a lot of references to those teachings in Buddhist Suttas. It is difficult to explain the process of rebirth without learning those teachings. Buddhists can explain the process of life if they know those deep teachings.
person in prensent day dont know buddha existed or not and no way knowing it. so his focus should be on dhamma. learn it and decide if it sounds true or not. if you found it the correct way then follow it . thats what matters , not that buddha awakend or not. while you gradually get to understand dhamma and how its working in the world then you will get a faith in buddha, dhamma and awakened sanga. thats call akarawathi sraddha. thats the only faith praised by buddha. thats why buddha said 'one who see the dhamma also saw me'. buddhist dont start on the premise that there was a buddha and he is awakened.
Sadhu. 🙏The great Nyanatiloka and Henepola Gunarathana monks agree that Abhidhamma is not an original teaching of Buddha. "The third collection of the Páli Tipiþaka, or 'Triple Basket,' the so called Abhidhamma Piþaka, belongs-at least in its form handed down to us-undoubtedly to a younger period than the other two collections." ~ Nyanatiloka Mahathera "The Abhidhammapitaka gives the appearance of being a somewhat later scholastic attempt at systematization, but its teachings are fully consistent with the suttas and help shed light on many points requiring precise analysts and fine definition." ~ Henepola Gunarathana
Shame on you. There's a popular saying "Little knowledge is dangerous". Also the person who knows that he doesnt know is better than the person who thinks he knows, but doesnt really know.
Lolitha THERE ARE FACTS GIVEN ,THATS GOOD ENOUGH TO THINK THAT ABHIDHAMMA Has very SLIM PROBABILITY to be the TEACHINGS of BUDDHA . You NO NEED TO MAKE ANY STATEMENTS WITH OUT FACTS AND EVIDENCES.

If I gave Abhidharma two minutes of thoughts because it was mentioned by Mingyur Rinpoche.
