    I have never come across a bigger fan of Mickelson than myself so this obviously is tough for me to watch. This would've been Phil's 3rd Major win in a row and put him into another stratosphere at the time where only 1 other golfer has been. However, US Champion's do not hit 2 out of 14 fairways and that is all that Phil could muster on this day. The tee shot gets all the attention but obviously it was the 2nd shot that killed him. The one (and maybe only time) the NY crowds who love him urged him to his detriment. He should have chopped it up short of the green and hope to get it up and down to win it and if not, playoff tomorrow. Mind boggling that one of the greatest wedge players ever did not consider this. As Johnny Miller so correctly stated, there is nothing wrong with limping home and saying thanks for the trophy.

    I enjoy watching Phil win, but it's fascinating to watch him fail. This instance was compounded by the vicious commentary of Johnny Miller, who was personally offended that Mickelson would squander something as meaningful as the US national championship.
    Miller's best rant begins at 5:35 including the instant-classic "You don't have to run down the last stretch on a white stallion"

      It feels like Phil gets caught up in the fans adulation when he's in the woods. Everybody right next to him cheering him on, then Phil can't make himself do the sensible thing and pitch out, he wants to play the miracle shot. Sorry, not at Winged Foot. I would have loved to have seen him win this.

  • @kellyanastasia2752

    I think Phil Mickelson could play that hole again he'd still hit driver. He won't change his style or approach to please anyone else. I really think he'd rather lose doing it his way than win playing how people think he "should" play. It's just Phil and he has a ton of wins doing it his way.

    Basically this Open was about Harrington, Monty, Furyk and Mickelson all collapsing on 17 and 18 and missing opportunities that would have put them in a playoff or won it outright. Meanwhile, Ogilvy had the same chances and he was the only one to capitalize, chipping in for par at 17 and getting up and down at 18. Ogilvy earned it because he made the clutch shots down the stretch while everyone else fell apart. This open was brutally difficult, an old style U.S. Open where driving accuracy was king, as evidenced by the final score of +5.

    • @Avalanche962000
      @Avalanche962000 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      amlnet49 Agreed, but you forgot Colin Montgomerie - he choked as badly as everyone else you listed who collapsed around Ogilvy, the one clutch finish and deservingly the champion.

    • @aaronsmith4665
      @aaronsmith4665 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      amlnet49 Driving accuracy was king. And yet going into the 72nd hole, Mickelson as leading despite having hit less than half of his fairways.

    • @aaronsmith4665
      @aaronsmith4665 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nate Mullins Sorry, I can't give chipping in or making a semi-long putt as being "clutch."
      There truly is a fine line between a setup where +5 wins and it ends up having the best player winning because its fair, and +5 winning and the person who won was not fair. Mickelson finished 1 stroke out of the lead despite missing ore than half of the fairways. No, the setup had far too much luck (it does in all tournaments but too much in this one) in play.

    • @DanielSong39
      @DanielSong39 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +amlnet49 Actually Ogilvy had a 2-stroke lead in the middle of the round and gagged with 4 bogeys coming in. He did make 4 pars to finish the round but at the time it looked like it was only going to be good enough for a top 5 finish.

    Worst thing that happened was Phil not ending up in deep rough after his drive. The lie enticed him to go for the green which ended up costing him the title. If he had ended up in heavy rough he would have had to pitch back to the fairway. From there he makes no worse than 5, wins the open and has the career grand slam. BTW, the hospitality tent he hit isn’t there this year due to no fans. The same drive probably would have a clear shot at the green.

    It was a good 6 in the end. He drove the ball so poorly that sunday on one the most difficult courses ever seen. It was a miracle he was still in the lead playing the final hole. Majors always find you out if you're struggling with your swing. Like speith at the masters - holds it together for 3 and a half rounds then collapses on 12. The courses are just too exacting to win by hobbling round with a wild miss.

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      stevepising exactly the common thread between Spieth Mickelson and Van de Velde collapses is that all of them were leading by smoke and mirrors. Everyone forgets Van de Velde had been had blown a 5 shot lead in the first 8 holes Sunday before Craig Parry handed him the tournament on a silver platter with a triple bogey at 12. Spieth was leading but was playing much worse than his record setting performance the year before, he seemed to just be using his gained course knowledge from playing so well in 2014 and 2015, he had showed that he was patching together his game and his driving was poor. Mickelson had been driving it poorly all week which is why choosing driver was a bad decision, he had only hit 2 of 14 fairways in the final round but had been bailed out by Monty’s collapse

    So here we are, on the eve of the US Open at Winged Foot and I decided to watch this again, dummy that I am. I found myself hoping that that 3rd shot would get on the green. Weird. And I think I was more pissed off this time than I was when I saw it live. Using driver wasn't the problem; with that swing, he'd have hit the tent even with a 4-iron. And I'm still hoping; after all, I suffered with Arnie for about 20 years as he pursued his "4th leg," and I never gave up. So why start now with Phil?

Phil missed more than half of the fairways on the course and was making pars from everywhere. Jim was supposed to jump out and say "hey! I don't want to mess with your mindset right now, but maybe you should play this hole differently than you have played every other hole up to this point that has put you in the lead!"

    Winged foot 18th hole has a dogleg phil had to clear. His 4 wood would not have cleared it. Driver was the right play. Laying up to about 130 yards yards was the right play on the second shot. Phil was a master with the wedge in his hand. He might have gotten par that way. Too bad who knows phil would have won the grand slam that year or not but his go for it style bit him in the ass.

    Why don't announcers in golf, like ever, explain why hitting a 4wood there, or say, hitting an iron, is the safer play when trying to protect a lead and making sure you hit the fairway. I mean, not once in the many decades I have watched, have they ever explained it. The casual fan doesn't know. For example, if the average hacker had to guarantee that he hit the fairway, if he tried to hit an iron off the tee, or even a 4wood, he would have much less chance of hitting the fairway than he would hitting a driver. Obviously the pros control the ball better with irons and 4wood's, etc. but how about one time in 50 years explaining that to the public, because it is the exact opposite of what they should do when under pressure.

  • @williamshultz4620
    @williamshultz4620 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So maybe 4 wood or long iron off the tee, then maybe another long iron to the green and 2 putts and thanks for the trophy Johnny?
    Sounds so simple except this isn't your average par 4 at your local municipal course. All the leaders coming in botched this hole. Even Ogilvy had to make a fantastic up and in to make par.

      @@KingOfPopStars I wasn't trying to defend any of Mickelson's decisions. I was attacking Johnny Miller's 'par is a sure thing' philosophy. He's also insinuating that hitting the fairway is a sure thing too by taking less than a driver off the tee.
      Since you asked tho...I'm not gonna say it was a right or wrong decision off the tee. His second shot decision was the costly one for sure.

      @williamshultz4620 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dk-gl1nh To reiterate what I was saying I wasn't really going with or against what phil should do off the tee. I was attacking how oversimplistic JM was making it sound. Just listen to him at about 5:45. Say Phil finds the fairway with a long iron or 4 wood( which I recall Phil missing the fairway earlier in the round with less than driver) it is far from a sure thing to hit a long iron into a difficult green and get par. Did you forget that Colin Montgomerie was in the fairway with 7 iron in hand and somehow made the same score as Phil?.
      Also just because Miller happened to win a US Open which was some 33 years prior to this and on a different course, with different scoring conditions,does not mean he knows anything more and his words carry no more weight than anyone else.

  • @DanielSong39

      I can understand why u would say that and I even agree with you to a certain point. But I don't think it's fair to Ogilvy to say he "Didn't win it". Let's remember on the eighteenth, Ogilvy's ball landed in a divot, but he took his medicine dealt, with it like a man, and hit his shot. When it came up short he didn't huff and complain about how unlucky he was to land in a fucking divot with his perfect drive, he chipped it up there and made a putt. Ogilvy did everything right on that hole and did everything right throughout the championship.That is what the U.S Open is all about scrambling and saving pars. Mickelson didn't do either of those things on the final hole, which is strange because he was scrambling the entire day in the final round, the guy couldn't hit a fairway. But instead of chipping out and trying to knock a mid iron in close, like Ogilvy did, he choose to hit the impossible shot and it cost him.
