      They live about 6 months outside of the eggsac, and don't get close to this big until late summer/early fall. So it makes sense that he's been working with this spider since it was a 'baby'.

      @Garden Glow Amen! I have one living on the corner of my house as I leave this. I'm usually known as the Spidernator but I've allowed this one to live since her web is not in my way in any way shape or form. She picked a good spot too, we have a huge light above our garage that stays on like a street light 24/7 so, endless supply of bugs and everything else she could want to eat.

    Thank you Kenneth. I just encountered one of these for the first time while I was attempting to let my dog out.
    She had made a beautiful web across my deck. She was right where I needed to let my dog out.
    I took a few pictures to identify her and find out how to move her without killing her. Everyone said to just pick her up with my hand and move her. Well, that wasn't going to happen because I'm afraid of spiders. I'm not so afraid that I'll kill them, but I do move them away from me.
    I watched your video and appreciated your calm demeanor and obvious admiration toward the spider in your yard. It inspired a plan in me.
    I gently scooped her up in a small, open toy bin. She sat in the bin, a bit shocked, but unharmed. I walked slowly and carefully with the bin, talking to her the entire time. I took her to a nice area in my yard with trees, plants, and little traffic. My dog, son, and husband don't walk in this area. I only walk in the area from time to time to give my property my love.
    I carefully put the bin down to where she could easily walk forward and straight out of it. She was amazingly calm the entire time. Obviously, she was scared because she did not know if I was friend or foe, but she waited to see what would happen without totally panicking.
    I put the bin down by a nice area where she can spin a new web. I just left the bin, so she can crawl out when she is ready.
    I felt bad breaking her web, but it (and she) was smack dab in the middle of where my son's and dog's head would be when they went out to play. Will she be able to build a new web in the new area? She obviously built the first one quickly because it wasn't there last night.

      I tell you what, and what might even be better to bond with as far as spiders go, jumping spiders are super...personable (for a lack of a better term). They're almost friendly and I believe they actually remember encounters with people. Every spring I find a few around my porch and interact with them. Pick them up, make sure they see me, put them back. I've even had some of them approach me. It's probably just in my mind, but I think they actually remember and, dare I say, enjoy being around me. Super neat little creatures and they seem to have different personalities also.

    Argiopes are really cool...most orb weaving species are. I think it’s because their predators are things like birds, etc. If they’re gonna eaten, it’s just gonna be “CHOMP, done”...so huge, slow moving animals like humans don’t really register as much of a threat. “This warm tree is moving around...that’s weird...where did my web go?”

My most favorite spider though is Phidippus audax, the black and white jumping spider with the bright green fangs. They are fun to play with, trap one in between your patio doors with a bunch of house flies and watch them stalk and kill each in a matter of hours.

    OK, this is going to sound strange, (even to me, I'm normally frightened of spiders!), but we have one of these ladies hanging about our front porch. Always in the same spot, and, frankly, she's grown on us. Now the weather is turning and I feel sorry for the poor thing. Is it possible for them to survive the winter? (I'm strongly doubting it but..)
    Or, if she can't, would it be silly to try to bring her inside to live somewhere VERY contained for the winter and let her loose again in the spring? No idea how long their life span is but....

    • @KennethGisi
      @KennethGisi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Katharine Erskine The females usually die at the first hard frost so they have a short life span but if they are in a environment where it doesn't get down in those temperatures and they're fed throughout that time; it is possible for them to live for a few years. So it's not such a silly idea afterall :)

    • @KennethGisi
      @KennethGisi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Killer Insanity That part all depends on the individual spider I believe but, I have found if I fed them daily or every so often and occasionally walk around their web they would start to feel less threatened by me.

      @@KennethGisi She's beautiful! I have an immature female for an inside pet. She lives in a 5 gallon aquarium. I'm going to get her a male when she's mature. I actually know where there's 2 other immature females and when I see males in their webs I'm gonna steal 1 or 2 to breed my female with. I've seen up to 7 males in a females web before and stealing 1 or 2 won't make a difference. I have 31 years experience keeping reptiles, amphibians and arachnids. I love garden spiders but its a pity their lifespan is short.

    Awesome spiders, we get the golden orb webs down here is South Africa, they are slightly smaller than those ones but just as calm. Their webs are something to behold, when the light catches them they glow bright golden. So beautiful. And the web itself is incredibly strong. 9x the strength of steel the same thickness!!! Sadly, birds love to eat them so unless they build their webs in hard to reach places they usually don't survive. Some summers I hardly see any and then occasionally there will be a population explosion. Been a couple of years since I have seen any however.

    We don't have garden orb weavers that big in Ireland. They are about half the size at the biggest. Ours range from dark brown to orange and have a white cross on their abdomen. I was sitting on a public bench one time minding my own business on social media apps on my phone when all of a sudden I saw an orange one seemingly crawling through thin air towards me from a nearby flowering bush. She crawled on to my hand. I must have been very still for quite a while that she thought to use me as an anchor point for a thread. After observing her for a while she crawled back to the bush and I walked away in case she cast another thread and not ruin any attempt to start a web.

    Fun fact this is one of the top 15 most gentle spiders and is unlikely to bite you. Only way they bit is if you squeeze them or wiggle your toes like free mini hotdogs

    That was a fatty. I love arachnids. Had a black widow for around 8 years until I moved. I left her in her home. She would get so excited when I fed her. I've held jumping spiders, they are very intellegent and have great eye sight.

    We get those around here. They grow and grow until they attract the attention of a hungry blackbird and then we're short on spiders again.
