  • This is Part 2 of a two-part series on recovery with Russell Brand.
Very few of us are free from some form of addiction - alcohol, sugar, sleeping pills, sex, Instagram, co-dependent relationships, the list goes on. Russell points out that all our addictions stem from a common problem: spiritual disconnection. But when we admit we have a problem, believe in real change, accept help from others, and hand over our will and control to a higher power, we can begin to find freedom from our addictions.
Listen to the rest of this episode on the Commune Podcast with Jeff Krasno. To hear more from Russell, sign up for his upcoming Recovery course on Commune (onecommune.com/recovery) or check out his Luminary podcast, Under the Skin (luminary.link/russell @hearluminary).
    ABOUT RUSSELL
Russell Brand is an award-winning comedian, actor, author, public thought leader and a passionate activist for mental health and drug rehabilitation. He is one of the most recognizable and best-loved comedy performers in the world, with a series of sold-out tours, best-selling DVDs, and a number of major film roles to his name. He is also the author of seven books, including Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions, and Mentors: How to Help and Be Helped.
    ABOUT JEFF
I have had a lot of jobs: co-founder & CEO of Commune, co-founder and co-CEO of Wanderlust, board member at Pure Edge. I have authored of a couple of books, built a big wellness studio, developed a retreat center, brokered large-scale brand partnerships and created VOD platforms. Oprah even selected me to be part of the SuperSoul 100, a group of 100 top entrepreneurs.
Aside from being a dad to 3 horrible-adorable daughters, there is no job more humbling than hosting the Commune podcast. Every week, I interview people with esoteric expertise who are 10 times smarter than me. My nightstand turned into a tower of books as I cram for these interviews, learning everything from the fundamental nature of reality to the neuro-chemistry of the brain. It’s been an incredible challenge to deliver transformational content every Tuesday (and not embarrass myself). I hope you enjoy it!
    ABOUT THE COMMUNE PODCAST
Hosted by Jeff Krasno, the Commune podcast features thoughtful conversations for modern times. Not always comfortable but definitely needed, we explore both humanity and our human-ness. How can we live healthy, purpose-filled lives and be in service of something bigger? Guests include spiritual teachers, poets, scientists, philosophers, and activists for food sustainability, functional medicine, mental and physical health, and collective healing.

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my wife which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.

Amen God bless people. Save your health save your mind. Life is better without heroin, cocaine, alcohol and cigarettes. And you have more money in your pocket. God bless everyone who has rejected the devils intentions to be addicted to alcohol and cigarettes etc which can cause so much damage to health.

Hey mates! Can you help with the source? I suffer severe anxiety, panic and depression and I usually take prescription medicine, but they don't always help. Where can I find those psilocybin mushrooms? I'm really interested in treating my mental health without Rxs. I live in Australia don't know much about these. I'm so glad they help you. I can't wait to get them too. Really need a reliable source 🙏

Congrats! I'm really happy for you that your friend decided to help you. I always admire those who beat their addiction. Knowing it's possible to fix your life knowing there's people out there that have done what I thought was impossible gives me hope I will make it through as well. Those who share their experiences don't know how much it helps when you're about to give up, it gives you the strength knowing somone who actully know what it's like to go through this tell you it's possible, it's not the same somone telling you you can do it when they have no idea what it's like, but hearing somone who knows what it's like that helps a lot since you understand it firsthand and made it out gives so much hope. so thanks for sharing.

@@OneCommune I appreciate it my homie. I was doin coke and speed at age 14 graduated to heavy opiates. Been clean of the hard stuff for years but i had been struggling really hard with the bottle and kratom the last few years. It feels good to feel more normal. Only stuff i take is caffeine and kava nowadays and im feeling so much better already. I feel much more accountable having spoken up and being dead serious about my addiction. Ive been arrested, gotten a dui, been in fights, been a borderline abusive jerk...enough is enough. Im nice and very productive normally until the bottle touched my lips.

I’ve taken the steps, made use of therapy, and immersed myself in a fellowship of recovery. I live in a recovery house (Oxford-there’s probably one near you). I’m learning how to live without shame. The two of you are beautiful together. It's also interesting to me to see that when speaking with Jeff, who speaks slowly and calmly, Russell appears to speak in a manner that is slower and calmer than his usual self. This is actually wonderful for those listening to the conversation because Russell is a brilliant man with with incredible knowledge and facility of expression, but not everyone can process the information as quickly as he delivers it. And some of the information can therefore be missed on the part of the listeners. I don't know if Russell is making a conscious effort to speak calmly and more slowly but I can definitely say that when speaking with Jeff, this side of Russell comes out. Thank you both for your wonderful work and God bless! You are both beautiful in all possible ways!

A lot of what that Russell Brand character guy says really resonates with me. I was a good person once, and can be again maybe? I'll watch some of his stuff as he's clearly spent a lot of time experiencing similar shit to me. Well, here I am and thanks. I think I might try and enlighten myself. @16:40 The interviewer Jeff made an EXCELLENT point about applying the 12 steps to a country and using step 5 to be accountable for the harm caused by that country. Brilliant! Unfortunately, I think Russell missed the opportunity to explore what he brought up, and instead went on an adjacent point for whatever reason. I was truly surprised because I really admire and agree with 95% of what Russell says. Oh well, at least Jeff brought it up.
If you read this comment, please consider your country's need for atonement in order to truly resolve the spiritual/emotional/psychological issues it has that are probably the symptoms of not addressing those imperialist/colonial/capitalist wounds.
