  • A bit of a long, mildly rambling, tutorial on how to fold different layered hydrangeas.
This technique lets you fold Shuzo Fujimoto’s hydrangeas without having to add layers after the fact.
    •-•-•
    Approximate timings:
    - 1 layer @ 3:58
    - 2 layers @ 7:03
    - 3 layers @ 10:51
    - 4 layers @ 18:42
    - 5 layers @ 28:38

@@prabhakarshekdar9457 These were folded from Harmony print paper from Grimmhobby.
They come in 7.5cm and 15cm.
Available on a few online origami sites as well as Amazon 👍

Folded six layers. Used 25cm paper & 32 X 32 creases. Level 5 was a bit confusing but then it made sense. Two things come to mind. First, I suppose there is no getting around the fact that later layers scale up very large. Second, I didn’t crease the corners so layer 6 looks nice but layers 4 & 5 have a lot of extra creases. Wondering if more creases can be eliminated. Bit of a poser. For me anyway, leaving out creases might make folding/collapsing difficult. Might have to play around, experiment and see what happens. Might try to fold & unfold and mark layers to see which can be skipped. Found and ordered Grimm Harmony paper. Seemed nice & crisp and made quite pretty flowers. Will enjoy using. Also made a handy dandy tool from bamboo skewers. Great tool. Thanks!

Oh brilliant! Did all 5. Easier method & I learned a lot. The ‘misstep’ was good because as you say, one learns to recognize the collapse patterns, & I learned how to recognize when pattern is off/misplaced & also how to reverse & backup to previous step. Love the hydrangea & it’s fantastic to do without the fiddly manipulation on center square on back & pulling up triangles on front which eventually degrades the paper. This method is so much easier & neater to do from center out. Great tip how you use your handy dandy tool to make reverse creases. So accurate! Thanks! On to your other videos.

I've just bought a Fujimoto book, all in Japanese, and am working my way through it with Google Lens which seems to do a pretty incredible job of converting Japanese script. As you suggest he seems to fold up to three layers as you are but beyond that goes to the pulling through method which Sara demonstrates on Happy Folding. He credits that method to Naomi Tana.
He shows your method first but then says "hey - we could collapse this in one" (page 52 of the book I've got) which works well. He doesn't attempt more than three layers that way though.
I'd be struggling with the book were it not for the natty translations which the Google Lens app is doing!
I've got a lot to try out but will have a go at your many layered method soon once my brain is a little less addled :-)

Thanks for confirming that Ian, I had never seen more than four layers folded in this method, am glad the method works beyond. I have a few other videos on my instagram page that may be of interest to you later on, showing how you can fold different tile sizes. So many possibilities!

Thank you - your enthusiasm and obsession is infectious! I've only managed the one and two layered this evening but look forward to trying higher numbers. Doing them the "usual" way does result in a fair bit of untidyness so I'd be very happy to be able to reduce that.
