Maybe he got the correct spelling before the fourth time he spelled it...but who knows? Light should've just used Katakana or Hiragana to write the guy's name. SPOILER:... Light got lucky multiple times during the show, that's for sure.

When the serpent (the devil) was talking to Eve about the fruit (Apple), it convinced her to eat it by saying that if she and her husband ate the fruit, they would become like God. So in order words, the first sin was not simply disobeying God, but wanting to be God themselves. The first sin was a God complex, and Apple is the imagery that represents it. The Apple represents the first sin.

Let me explain you 2 things. 1: Light wants to be "known" for killing criminals in the sense, that he wants people to know that you get killed if you commit a crime -> deterrence to stop people from commiting crimes. In that sense he means it that there is someone/something that kills criminals. He does not want to be known personally in any way. 2: The above point from 1: is also the reason why he choses to stay with heart attacks as "standard" so people will become aware that its not something random, but there is a system -> you die if you commit a crime. The Death Note / Lights "Mission" is in the end nothing more than an analogy for the Death Penalty
I would say it’s not as much regarding death penalty, but more regarding totalitarianism. The power of having control over people’s lives and their deaths the the power of a God, so it’s a supreme power. It can be compared to the power of a dictator, or an absolutist king (which are pretty much the same thing), since dictators can choose to kill or to spare anyone they want, the people’s lives are in his hands. But more than that, we all know that democracy is full of flaws and it’s not completely functional. With the power spread among thousands of politicians, like senators, ministers, representatives, judges, prosecutors, deputies, sheriffs, and many other offices of power in a government, corruption, leniency and bureaucracy are things are seem to be rooted in democracy. So a good and righteous citizen might think that they would fix everything if they were in a supreme place of power. This anime shows why a totalitarian dictatorship will never the answer, it shows that no matter how righteous someone is or how strong is their sense of justice, absolute power will corrupt everyone, and it wouldn’t be different with you. Like Winston Churchill said, “democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried.”

Ryuk having two Death Notes is actually a lot more complicated. The one he dropped in the schoolyard actually belonged to another Shinigami that we meet later. He swiped it so he could drop one and still have his own. Shinigami are pretty lax and lazy, so he got away with it. And it's only the first episode, and you're already into the fan theories about the origin of a certain Shinigami after the entire series.

@15:44 the names above were the same name with different spellings. Light heard the name but wasn’t sure of the spelling therefore he wrote all the spellings he knew for that name.

Hey, I really enjoyed your reaction and subscribed. Definitely, one of the smarter reactors to watch this show, most of them are a bit dull to grasp what is happening. Regarding the names that Light had written when the guy got hit by a truck, I'm almost certain that it's because there are probably many ways to write a name in terms of symbols. I don't have a good example at hand, but think of how some people write "capitalisation" and others write "capitalization" where you can write the same word with an S or Z. I guess Something like Cavin Klein could be written Kevin Klein or Kavin Klayn, etc by someone who has never heard of the brand before. Edit: I have to recommend you guys watch Black Sails because I'm 100% sure you would love it after hearing your discussion, in my opinion, it's one of the best shows after game of thrones, on par with shows like vikings, etc but because it aired on Starz it didn't gain as much traction as it deserved. Many channels have reacted to it like Blind Wave and Duo reacts.
What I notice in the class sene where they’re reciting the biblical quotes or lines in the few episodes is how the start of lights journey as Kira , the journey that it takes to not be found out, and the end of his life will commence. Those two never met during the Project and only talked once on the phone with each other. So Obata-sensei was given only the Storyboards and Dialog for the current Chapter he was working on and had no Idea of the Story himself. So he didn't know which Characters might get important later on or may never be of any significance. He's just as exited to every new Chapter as us readers. Same goes for Ohba-sensei who never saw the Drawn Chapters until they got published. xD That's maybe one of the Secrets why Death Note is one of the best Manga/Anime of ALL TIME. 😎 (P.S.: Both Ohba & Obata did also a Manga/Anime about themselfs called "Bakuman" where they show what it's like to become a Mangaka. I disagree. The apple, at least in the anime (I've not read the manga), is most certainly being used as a Biblical reference in the op. Even though the forbidden fruit is not specifically stated as an apple in the Bible, it's the most common and obvious representation of it -- used in almost every media making a Biblical reference to the fruit. The anime clearly depicts Light in the style of Renaissance-type Christian paintings both with and without the apple. The Biblical nature isn't depicting the morals of the Bible obviously, but it is about Light being given higher knowledge and power to be considered "godlike." Also, there's his obvious god complex, which is the point of the whole thing - becoming a god of what he perceives as justice.

Edit: I have to recommend you guys watch Black Sails because I'm 100% sure you would love it after hearing your discussion, in my opinion, it's one of the best shows after game of thrones, on par with shows like vikings, etc but because it aired on Starz it didn't gain as much traction as it deserved. Many channels have reacted to it like Blind Wave and Duo reacts.

What I notice in the class sene where they’re reciting the biblical quotes or lines in the few episodes is how the start of lights journey as Kira , the journey that it takes to not be found out, and the end of his life will commence. I want to point this detail because no ones really talking this detail.

I am sure you already know but at least at the beginning Light is fully in control not killing without reason with time his moral rules get more prone to bending and expanding but except the first time L provokes him he is pretty stable for at least first 5-6 or even 10 episodes

Interesting Fun Fact about the Show for your Future-Reactions (No Spoilers 😉):
Death Note was done by two People: Tsugumi Ohba (Author) & Takeshi Obata (Mangaka (Artist)). Those two never met during the Project and only talked once on the phone with each other.
So Obata-sensei was given only the Storyboards and Dialog for the current Chapter he was working on and had no Idea of the Story himself. So he didn't know which Characters might get important later on or may never be of any significance. He's just as exited to every new Chapter as us readers. Same goes for Ohba-sensei who never saw the Drawn Chapters until they got published. xD That's maybe one of the Secrets why Death Note is one of the best Manga/Anime of ALL TIME. 😎
(P.S.: Both Ohba & Obata did also a Manga/Anime about themselfs called "Bakuman" where they show what it's like to become a Mangaka. Really worth checking out as well)

Just started watching and I'm gonna binge this but I'm glad you're watching this in dub. I'm a sub anime person but death note is an exception with it's voice acting and imo it makes light sound more like he should. In Japanese he sounds too much like a weak kid or something.

I disagree. The apple, at least in the anime (I've not read the manga), is most certainly being used as a Biblical reference in the op.
Even though the forbidden fruit is not specifically stated as an apple in the Bible, it's the most common and obvious representation of it -- used in almost every media making a Biblical reference to the fruit.
The anime clearly depicts Light in the style of Renaissance-type Christian paintings both with and without the apple. The Biblical nature isn't depicting the morals of the Bible obviously, but it is about Light being given higher knowledge and power to be considered "godlike." Also, there's his obvious god complex, which is the point of the whole thing - becoming a god of what he perceives as justice.

It’s not written anywhere that is was an apple, but in the popular imaginary, people identify the apple as a imagery or a representation of the forbidden fruit. And it has all to do with Light Yagami. The apple has a lot of meaning in this show. Death Note uses lots of Jewish/Christian references, and the apple is one of them, since it is portrayed as the forbidden fruit from the Garden of Eden, which is called in the Bible as the fruit of tree of knowledge of good and evil, and God was the only one allowed to eat from it, so in order words, it represented the omniscience (all knowing characteristic) of God. When the serpent (the devil) was talking to Eve about the fruit (Apple), it convinced her to eat it by saying that if she and her husband ate the fruit, they would become like God. So in order words, the first sin was not simply disobeying God, but wanting to be God themselves. The first sin was a God complex, and Apple is the imagery that represents it. The Death Note is the apple, it’s a power that only God should have, and Light using it to become the God of the new world is just like Eve and Adam eating the fruit (the popular imagery of the apple) to become God, to become all-knowing. And I would say this show is a critique to totalitarian and authoritarian ideologies, because it doesn’t matter how righteous and good you are, absolute power will corrupt you. Even though democracy is full of flaws and of injustice, putting all the power in a single person’s hand is war farther from the answer. Like Churchill said: “democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the other that have been tried”
