Classic Naruto is some of the best the genre of battle shonen has to offer, and I find it truly impressive that Kishimoto was able to go from that to whatever the war arc is to Bort. It's like he used up all his talent writing the Pain arc and ran on fumes till he hit Madara's introduction where he had one last blaze of glory and it was all downhill from there.

Itachi Pursuit, Pain Invasion and Five Kage Summit are thrilling to experience in quick succession because after the Itachi reveal the story goes crazy. Naruto really needed a few more story arcs to unpack all that happened in those three arcs alone.

Also, as a tragedy enjoyer, I adore Itachi and Sasuke’s relationship post reveal, it’s beautiful and relatable (genocide aside ofc). Sasuke having been destroyed by Itachi’s actions but still understanding him and choosing to love him and avenge him as well it’s just *chef’s kiss*

I take Kishimoto trying to make Obito Uchiha: the man with the highest body count in the series, the guy who nuked 2 villages onscreen, massacred the children of the Uchiha Clan specifically, killed the main character's parents and started ninja World War 4 because a girl he had a crush on died while Kakashi was losing loved ones almost daily a sympathetic character as an insult. Naruto calling his parents' killer "The coolest guy" did more to get me to dislike him than any talk no jutsu memes ever could.
Obito as a whole is such a missed opportunity. He’s too unsympathetic to be a tragic villain, and too pitiful to be a full blown evil villain. It’s like all the nuance Kishimoto had when developing characters like Pain and Sasuke was lost in the War arc which is Obito’s arc. Before that I loved Tobi and what he was up to.

Part 1 was more consistent but didn't quite hit the same highs as Shippuden Like seriously bruh the land of waves arc is one of the best first arcs in shounen Chunin Exams are goated Tsunade's arc was good And the Sasuke Retrival is top SS tier in all of shounen But Shippuden has Akatsuki supression which had Shikamaru being a badass and building on the will of fire so ofc it's goated Pain arc was perhaps the highest high of the series it has the best fights, villian and story besides the part of the war arc that had Madara being a badass in it
