Don't second-guess yourself. This was solid advice. If people just did whatever they liked and then made an unsuccessful design it would be important for them to know why it didn't work.
Confidence is important! If I would have gone with what my friends said at the time, I wouldn't be where I am now I believe!

This is a really great video! It came up as a recommendation and thought “why not! Let’s watch”. Very useful tips and I liked that you used yourself in examples but also stating the differences between characters from games versus vtubers and their purposes. Excited to see what other videos you do!

I always make the joke to people who are designing character/vtubers. I always told them "go design it like your designing a touhou character." The reason i said it is, if you ever compair the official art and the fan art, you can see that the design is able to fit in to all sort of medium.
So my advice, it will be a bonus if your design can easily fit in all sort of medium!
True ! 2hou has very recognizable designs that withstood the test of time imo!
Its also good to think how your design translates into different mediums used by vtubers, such as 3D for VRC or Games such as Game Mods !!

Recently i have noticed in my drawings that it was becoming slightly bland or too much details to redraw. This was not onty helpful for emerging vtubers, but is also useful to us artists making characters. ❤❤ because of this video... Realizing that my character design also signifies content I'll make also helps me fliter out unnecessary details. That, combined with what you talked about (silhouette, details, top priority) will be a big help on my next try.

Unfortunately, I'm not that familiar with the TH-cam Gaming space, since I primarily stream on twitch, and I wont lie, there is a bias out there fore the conventionally attractive anime style, that attracts most people, if you go for a more westernized style or realism style, it could be more niche!
But ultimately, thats what you want to do, form your own niche and attract like-minded people, thats the "secret" of forming a community you actually feel comfortable with/around! So If you're a bit unsure how this could affect your popularity, id say give it a try either way! Dont sell yourself out for the sake of popularity! In my case I'm just admittedly also biased towards cute anime faces LMAO
THAT BEING SAID! There are many creators out there whose models dont reflect said style, and they went with a simplistic or realistic styled approach and can still shine through because personality, innovation and maybe even skill is what keeps ppl hooked, regardless of how your model presents itself!
The examples you mentioned though, people love elf ears and claws with a fade out color! so I do believe you actually dont have to be worried too much!!

Very informative! I'd say a lot of the rules here apply to most character design not just vtubers. Like that character with the hair hands you showed - she follows the rules, works for her medium, and her design matches the theming you gave her, I'd say she is well designed. And I love your vtuber model :)

Minor quibble, Zhongli's sillouette is a bit more than just a "dude with some hair", namely, his hair is shaped in a very specific way. A lot of anime styled characters will rely on their hair to give them a distinct sillouette, and you'd be surprised how effective distinct hair that isn't full Goku/Cloud/Sora levels can be. For example, Fire Emblem Heroes always previews seasonal banners with sillouettes, and people can always figure out who the character is.
I think I know what you mean, truth be told, I was looking for references for this segment shortly before the stream was about to start because I prepared all the slides and the writing part but I forgot to include examples for this part, so i went with the examples shown in the video as they were coherent! I do think Zhongli has a better silhouette than other genshin characters, I should have probably gone for Childe since his hairstyle is very common seen in most anime boys except for his ahoge thats the stand-out point of his hair-silhouette (like Joker P5, Hachiman Oregairu, Oreki Hyouka etc and so on and so forth, the usual messy anime boy hairstyle) HOWEVER - while I think Zhongli would do better in a silhouette test than Childe (also sidenote i love love love childe sm...genshin is my fave game!) I dont think if Genshin wouldnt be as popular as it is and it would be a niche indie game, ppl would not recognize Zhongli soley from the hair silhouette, esp if you translate his hair into vtubing format, keep in mind models are static and one of the most prominent things about his hair is his ponytail, which can be seen all the time in game when you play as him, granted its on his back, and in official art its always either drawn over his sholder on the front or floating in the wind, but if its a model you would never see that part of his hair, thats why I made the comparison, because again he works perfectly fine in game medium but as vtuber design he has many shortcomings because of the medium itself. I hope I am making sense, while I agree with you, I hope the reasoning why I went with him made sense, but I could have gone for better examples too of Genshin characters that fall flatter on that side because of a normal hair silhouette (id say Lisa without her hat would also be a victim of this, but ayaka for example wouldnt because of her hair danglies?) I cant say anything about Fire Emblem though since I'm not familiar with it >-<

Lost count of how many times I want to fan art some vtubers and then I cannot @ the amount of details I'm afraid I'll miss out
In my experience, everyone is happy about fanarts as long as the character resembles their design! Details or not! I hope you can have fun and simplify the design a bit if its too complex
imo the only thing that bugs me the most is the model that doesn't fit the personality/voice of the vtuber at all.
Like loli models with big sis or even mom voices, or a lewd model but the vtuber sounds like a shy girl. At that point I don't care about the design anymore. Unless it's the quirk and part of your character like Enna, Tenma and even Porcelain.
To be honest, I know what you mean but Vtubing is a form of self-expression and even if the voice doesnt fit, people should have fun with it! It can ruin the "immersion" for sure, but the personality of a vtuber is what they make of it, like you mentioned for Porcelain ! This was more so for design purposes, I didnt go into the kayfabe aspect of vtubing in here but it can be important to keep in mind! Another thing I didnt mention in that video is how your model will affect your audience. For example. if you're seiso and want a seiso audience but your model is lewdtuber coded, then you should probably not go the sexy route bc people WILL go into their streams with a certain stereotype mindset etc !! All factors one can/should keep in mind, depending how immersed they want their audience to be!
@@yumekuzukawa I understand! But to be clarified, vtubers that I have an issue with are like only 5%. I didn't mean that if their model have big breast and sexy clothes they have to be lewd. Like Hina from PC, I'm fine with that.
The problem is, to put it in perspective, it's like Calli was using Bijou's model. Or Ina was in Kronii's model. The personality and the model are completely crashed with each other. Can it work? Maybe. Could they have better models? Definitely.
Models that have voices that don't match the design can be good. That's a great way to give the character the "gap moe".

Not at all! You can always go for a rebrand! There are aspects you could keep from your previous design (such as maybe for example hair color or eye color) to call back to your old design, or you can go full rebrand! Important would be to inform your community about this and be aware that rebrands can go both ways, you could either gain more followers who are interested in your new design or weed out those who were only interested in your old design, which can be hard but i think it would be worth it to go forward with something you feel comfy with and love!

Omg, that's a cool video and I love your design, but now I understand that my idea accidentally overlapses with yours (the femboy theme, haircut) and I'm stuck again with finding themes for my character to make it unique, with which I'm struggling for a long time now
Do you have some advice maybe for how to find a suitable themes for vtuber design? I saw that it should be multilayered, like 2 themes or so, and that you can take ideas from your traits, but I can't really find anything in myself that would describe me in two words. I have too much going on and I'm not good in anything in particular QwQ

Thank you! I think you can apply most of the things I mentioned onto 3D environments as well ! "Rule" number one was to keep the medium in mind (for example game) so it should be applicable for game characters too 🥺❤️🩹
@@yumekuzukawa Well, I have seen game characters with simple clothing design, so it depends on individuals. I'm about to add assets to my simple vroid model, but after seeing your guides, I thinking maybe my model can be upgraded later, while maintaining the concept of simplicity, hmhmhm...
@@damienkwok6361 definitely! Simple doesn't mean bad after all, if you look at designs from undertale for example! Still very recognizable!

Dont worry too much! How can you be good at something you havent done before? Its a learning process! You can learn to be entertaining, you can become more confident and you will do great, just give yourself some time! Being entertaining can mean lots of things, you dont have to be super funny and hyper all the time, you can also be entertaining by being cozy, chill and relatable! There's an audience for everything out there, and I didnt start out the way I did either! Allow yourself to grow and dont be too hard on yourself ! Try out Vtubing and if its fun, continue with it! You can do it, best of luck!!!
Hello Yume! This video was very helpful, but what if I have 2 themes and can't decide between them? They are very different, one being a pastry themes witch and a steampunk victorian doll and i love them both but can't pick one. I don't know of any Vtubers that have 2 different persona's/ channels for different vtuber models but idk what to do, help pls? 😅 (❤ ur vids, i just got into vtubing and am def subbing)
Hello! First of all, thank you for the sub it means a lot ❤️🩹 secondly, It might just be my opinion but I actually think if you were to combine those themes you would have a GREAT unique concept going! I've seen steampunk dolls before and I've seen pastry witches before, but I've never seen a Victorian pastry witch doll before! You can make a doll with steampunk features that also resemble a witches clothing and has elements of a baker in it (think witch hat and apron, on an othetwhise Victorian styled dress, while the limbs are balljointed and/or have gears somewhere for the steampunk aesthetic! I would go for a muted color pallette with a poppy color and a braidloop hairstyle Mayhaps to symbolize a sweet pastry ring similar to donuts but I forgot the name of it ahyjdb 🤔sorry just rambling on but the design idea that popped into my head was rlly cute and unique skdbsbdb so actually love your ideas you should def combine it imo it could work rlly well! Even lore wise, it would work! A doll that came to live is now practicing and combining magic and machinery gadgets in hopes to create the best pastries in the world! Building a steam punk oven enhanced with magic only for her pastries to either fail miserably, or turn out great!! (I love the girl failure trope that's why the suggestion LOL)
HOWEVER!! That being said, if you think it would be too chaotic and or cluttered you can always go for one of the choices first and do the other second! The only reason I suggest that is because 1. some vtubers indeed have two dif aesthetics and designs and hence a separate acc for it all and 2. it's just expensive to get done both at once and depending on how serious you would like to take Vtubing I'd suggest focusing on one of the things first for money sake?

I'll have to play around with my design for her and see if I can simplify it a bit. If this idea does turn into an actual Vtuber I'll def let you know. I was looking at some of your other videos and loved them, thank you for your hard work and taking the time to help me out!!! The braid loops and poppy color is super smart!! (And I think what you were thinking of was the round challahs. Edit: OR braided donuts. I Honestly don't know the difference)

While its true that one shouldn't overwhelm their viewers with 2348234 themes, if they fit together and are not trying to one-up each other, I think you can make it work perfectly, especially with the ideas you provided!! I would love to see what you will come up with! Also I looked up the name, it is mochi-donuts or pon-de rings! I had to imagine a hairstyle resembling those with a witch hat that has the round base of it in the shape of a gear!!

If you publish a PNG of the patterns for people to use it shouldnt be too much of an issue for artists to work with it! As for not "passing" a test I provided here; Dont worry! not passing one or two of these doesnt mean you're destined to fail! Many big Vtubers dont pass this test either, like shxtou, his silhouette is rather "basic" but he's one of the most successful male indie vtubers out there, if not THE most successful male indie! This video is more so to help ppl be more coherent with their designs if they happen to struggle and some things to think about!

I'm an artist but i dont have a good insight when it comes to vtuber design demonetization :o as an artist you dont have much rules to follow for the public besides keeping yr stuff SFW for a everyone audience and more suggestive if for adult audience etc and i assume its the same with vtubing because youtube monetization. Anyway back to the question,,, do vtuber designs with more horror, blood or gorey elements fall under monitization for vtuber designs and if theyre safe to still make for an audience. Ive been working on one and would love insight who knows more bout vtuber design stuff. ^^
Well, heavy gore is not allowed on neither twitch or TH-cam in terms of design! You can be subtle with eyeballs, and a blood toggle iirc, overall they are better than suggestive outfits when it comes to monetization i think, as esp twitch is very ban heavy when you show a lil underboob for example, but I have seen models that open their mouth widely and reveal massive teeth and tongue with creepy undertones, or such that's fine! If you draw a missing eye-wound or something with heavy blood that's not fine! I'm not sure on the specifics either but id say make the creepy nsfw things you plan to do into toggles rather than base-main design!
@@yumekuzukawa hmmm I could try that,, I highly doubt I can make a meat/intestine jacket sfw since this characters lore was a parasite making it's own body with hospital/lab remains l I did think further for this and had alternative outfits made but they are more comfort themed than relating to the character and what they are. So I suppose I can try explore more outfit ideas or have their original outfit as an alt design more for fanart than a rigged thing. Their 40% is relatively okay besides their shoulders having their fit visible.

In regards to character design I personally hate Mihoyo and the tendency from CN games (mostly of old) to overdesign. Iirc there's actually a word and fashion trend after it, just toss a buncha good ideas onto someone and call it a day.
Im honestly a bit split on it because I've seen some of the concept designs of hoyo games vs final ones, and I tend to prefer most concept pieces - that being said some designs are way too much for me too in Genshin for example but I'd not necessarily call them bad or that they just slapped random stuff on, because you can see many meaningful parts of the designs flow together with lots of cultural history or inspiration to it, so while it's not my cup of tea I still can appreciate that they put a lot of thought into the design! Some examples for that would include yujin, zhongli, xingqui/ chongyun etc !!

Is it lazy to base my character off my fav anime character?
It really depends on how much, what, and what for! If you plan to make vtubing into a job and intend to earn money with it, I'd advise you against heavily doing so, let's say if your fave character has blue hair and that's why your vtuber will have blue hair - that's fine! Or even personality traits for lore! But if you intend to heavily base the design off of a pre existing character you could face a lot of complications later down the line, people will probably constantly compare you and it could get annoying, you could have difficulties making a brand and name for yourself if your vtuber looks too close to your character, because people might not recognize it as it's own thing, so on and so forth! So I'd say maybe don't do that if you intend to take Vtubing seriously. Again, same hair or eye color as your fave is fine but make it your own thing rather than "copying" a character, if that makes sense? Sorry if some words I used sound a bit harsh, I hope you know what I mean cause I'm not saying you'll copy a design! Just saying to be careful with how much and what you do to base it off of a pre existing character! Also heavily advise you to NOT base it off of a pre existing vtuber !!!! But that's just some thoughts I have about it!

Do you think hair and horns on the head would be too much? I really like the character Mina Ashido from My Hero Academia. I dont want to do vtube serious but if it gets there i dont want any of the complications you said. To be honest i dont really have original ideas. :(
@@IsabellaAshido Pink hair and horns should be fine, even if you wish to have a similar hair shape to Ashido! Id say don't make the horns similar, and maybe, since her eyes are rather unique go for a different kind of uniqueness with her eyes maybe!
Then again, designs are fluid, the design you come up with NOW does not have to stay the same, as you go on with vtubing! Def try it as a hobby, to see if you like it!! As for original ideas, I assume you refer to design alone? Because you don't have to worry too much, there are many artists out there who take design commissions, so you're not alone with figuring things out!

I’ve been inspired to do vtubing for a few days now, though doing that as a minor would probably be difficult but maybe one day I’ll be able to do it!
Im all for one following their dreams but since you're a minor id advise you to be extra careful in the Vtubing space as fans can be very parasocial, or downright creepy if you happen to attract a weird crowd, so make sure to have proper rules in place when streaming, and do not EVER give out too much irl information about yourself. Like in every online space I'd say exhibit caution and don't try to jump into friendships, if something feels off, listen to your gut and avoid people who have a mainly lewd vibe to them etc !!! Stay safe cause sometimes the Vtubing sphere can be very dangerous but even more so if you're underage 😭regardless I don't want to fearmonger as there are also a lot of kind ppl in the scene !! I just figured i should mention some things here and there one should be careful with! I do Hope you can have fun and create a design you like 🙏🏻❤️🩹 and when you become an adult you could go all in if you like streaming! That's my number one advice: stream first before investing any kind of money to check if you like it!
