Hillblock & Ecology_ Wier, Wreck and Algae

In augustus is in Burghsluis een nieuw type Hillblock aangebracht om de ecologie te bevorderen. Het block met een grovere structuur houdt meer water vast en zorgt zodoende in de getijzone voor een goede natte voedingsbodem voor wieren en kleine zeedieren.
Na twee maanden zijn de eerste resultaten al goed zichtbaar op en tussen de blocks.
Op de blocks vinden we een laag van klein darmwier. Tussen de blocks hebben zich al diverse bruinwieren gevestigd als Zee-eik, Blaaswier en Knotswier. Ook de komst van nieuwe fauna is snel gegaan. Tussen de blocks vinden we alikruiken en zeepokjes in de groei.

In August a new type of Hillblocks are placed on the dikes around Burghsluis to promote ecology. The blocks have a coarser structure that can hold the water in and around the concrete column for a longer period. The semi wet structure provides a good breeding ground for different types of algae and tiny sea creatures. After two months, the first results are already visible on and between the blocks. On the blocks we find a layer of Blidingia Minima. Between the blocks a variety of brown algae has rooted, for example Vesicles Wrack, Flat Wrack and Knotted Wrack. Also the local fauna has found its way to the new revetment. On the blocks we already see a small colony of Acorn Barnacles and several periwinkles found their new home between the blocks.
