With you we can begin to "touch the surface of the soul of China". I'm much too old to travel now, but think that in a sense I have a fuller experience than I could get on a brief visit as a tourist. I run a hiking group made up of many nationalities and they make my day. Lots of different perspectives. Something like you experience constantly. Yes, we have Chinese hikers including two in the late 80’s and they are a refreshing experience.

For Open internet access, people who go to China with any foreign Sim (data roaming) do not need any VPN. There is no firewall for those and all apps work fine, including Google maps, Gmail, FB etc
