    I have had the learning issues all my life, almost lost a very good job because of it. In fact that job sent me to be tested and we found out I had issues with mixing things up. Now I am in my 60's and looking at ways I can help myself hear better. I know I can have a song in my sung to me by the artist. I love music and want to learn to music. Maybe I am okay, just in a different way that we are just learning about. Looking forward to learning as I go.

    Auditory is definitely my strength, but I am horrible at math! I thought it was interesting when you mentioned remembering how someone sounds in your head. My son never remembers anything so I am going to be more understanding instead of thinking he just isn't remembering. Great video.

      I love that! I can relate... tutoring so many different types of kids really helps me to be more patient and understanding. There's a huge spectrum of what people are capable of remembering, but in almost every case I found that anyone can improve any type of memory with practice. My one biggest piece of advice for children is always use positive reinforcement. Correcting from time to time is fine, but praising them when they do something well is even more important and expressing why it was so good. For example "I love how you made eye contact while I was giving you instructions and then you asked me a great question to make sure you understood it. Those are really great listening skills!"

    This is so important for language learning in adults but almost never talked about… In order to parse a sentence you generally need to be able to hold it entirely in your head.
    Also it's interesting that for me if I want to recall numbers backwards I basically visualize them in my head and go through the list in reverse, so both visual and auditory memory are involved.

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't agree more! Auditory memory is so vital, yet it's never discussed unless you happen to go to a tutoring center that specializes in cognitive therapies or you find a tutor with that type of training. I'm a visual learner, so I do the same as you. I visualize the numbers in my mind. Auditory and verbal learners tend to memorize by the sound a rhythm of the numbers by repeating it over and over to themselves. If you haven't checked out my video on visual learners, I think you'd enjoy it! th-cam.com/video/IN-_S_jj3gE/w-d-xo.html

      That's so interesting, because I was absolutely great at learning languages at school. I would just look at or hear the sentence/word and I could remember and use it. I also didn't know that most people don't hear the voices of the people they know as if they were there. I'll have to thank my auditory memory for it!

      I didn't either until I tutored at a center that specialized in learning disabilities. We would do auditory memory drills every single session because of how important it is for understanding phonetics. Kids with dyslexia do not intuitively know how to sound out words because they're not as good at being able to break a word into sounds. These number drills help a lot with that.

    I have a short attention span and selective hearing 😆! My health issues have also affected my short term memory. Literally most of the time can't recall a simple sentence I've said within a few minutes of saying it. Which is a problem as I lean more towards 'auditory learning.' I also thought everyone could hear the voice of the person your repeating in your head 🤔.
    My auditory memory with long term is very sharp. However, when it comes to numbers... I can remember a mobile number very quickly which is 10 numbers, my bank card number which is 12 numbers. I heard my parents only two times say the code for the car radio when I was 9 or 10 years old. And 6 years later I remembered it. I was really good at remembering dates for occassions as well, not so much now.
    When my short term memory wasn't affected I never needed a notepad. I'd think of something before bed and then wake up and 8 out of 10 would remember my thought within 20mins of waking up. The 1.5% would take more than an hour and the rare 0.5% would either be not remembering until the next day, or two. I hope I can improve on my short term memory again as it can get frustrating.
    My visual memory I'd say is my weakness.

    Auditory memory is just as good as it is for our other senses. I can recognize voices and sounds I haven't heard in 30 or more years. Nor so long ago I took a ride in a 1963 mercury just like what my dad used to drive in the mid 60s. That familiar Ford engine sound was instantly recognizable more than 45 years later. How do we recognize voices on the phone given it's shitty sound quality... yet we do this easily. Auditory memory is actually excellent.

    My experience with auditor memory is a poor one, and my visual memory is strong. I feel that my struggles with ADHD may have impacted my ability. I am looking to strengthening this part of me. Largely because it will help me to passing an exam that relieves heavily on a good auditory memory recall ability.

    Curious to know your opinion on how your auditory memory helps you learn a language faster. Thanks for the video!

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting! I haven't really thought about it in that context. I'm just speculating here, but I would assume that those with high auditory memory would do well learning languages in an immersive way, like just living in a country and hearing the language all the time rather than trying to learn it from a book or app or classroom (not that they can't, but the more they hear the language, the faster they'll learn it). It'll be coming from a place of remembering how something sounds rather than over analyzing it in an academic way. They'd probably be very good at remembering entire sentences and common phrases as chunks. Hope I answered your question!

    Im a kinesthetic learner but im an audio learner as well because when I was in elementary, I have a poor eyes sight. I still don't have glasses that time that's why my grades are always bad because I can't see what's in the blackboard and then on 6th grade I realized that maybe I should focus on hearing more than seeing, and after that I can now catch up on class.

    I’m in my mid 20’s and I have just now realized that my auditory memory is definitely not up to par. Receiving verbal instructions (especially when said quickly) and not being able to process what is being said is a Major weakness. Definitely not ideal when working in the medical field!

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Finding out it's a weakness for you is half the battle because we can't fix what we don't see or aren't aware of. One thing you could try is taking notes while people are giving you instructions. I just say, "Hold on a minute, I don't want to forget anything you're telling me. Let me write this down." Or you could record the instructions on a phone to play back later. Also it's important to repeat back what someone is telling you. "Hey, I'd like to make sure I heard you correctly. You'd like me to do xzy. Is that right?" In the beginning, it's important to find work arounds because your auditory memory is not going to improve overnight. But if you practice frequently, it should improve over time. Repeating back what you think you've heard is a great practice to get into because you can see where your gaps are.

    I have a hard time remembering in the immediate presence what someone is telling me especially if there are multiple instructions. I often need to slow people down and ask for only a couple instructions at a time and if i'm able to put them in action immediately than I will learn them and commit them to longterm memory, Without the action the instructions will likely be lost or incompletely remembered. Further, I am good at remembering long strings of numbers, like credit cards, and committing them to long term memory. I can also rely on my poor short term auditory memory to forgot long strings of numbers if I know I'm not supposed to commit them to memory (also like credit cards if I overhear someone else's).

    My son is 9 and he has a bad memory with school subjects that he's not keen about, on contrary to football stats which is his hobby. He has a short term memory for subjects that he's not interested in. He's a visual-kinesthetic learner. Planning to try the string of numbers therapy, do I also speak the numbers out to improve his auditory memory ? Do I start from 3 numbers first? Thanks

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions! Yes, start with 3-digit numbers, and yes you call them out and have him repeat back. When that becomes easy, increase the numbers. And then eventually you can challenge him to do it backwards to improve visual memory as well. So I'll say "repeat 3-4-7 backwards" and then they'll say "7-4-3." You can also do the same exercises with letters. Lastly, you can practice full sentences. Recite a full sentence from a book and have him repeat it back word for word. If that's easy for him, do 2 sentences. Hope that helps! Keep us posted on how he's doing.

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recommend spending at least 2-4yrs working at professional tutoring centers. Many of them will provide training, and you also get to shadow more experienced tutors and learn their teaching methods. I've found that it was much easier for me to learn a subject matter than to be able to effectively transfer that understanding to someone else, so the skill of teaching usually takes much longer to master than just learning a particular subject. Most tutoring centers require a bachelor's degree and usually you have to take some kind of test to prove you understand the subject matter. Sometimes you also need to do some shadow teaching as part of your interview. I recommend teaching at a minimum of 2 different centers because it'll broaden your training and understanding of how to teach because each center has its own philosophy and methods. Also tutoring to a wide range of ages is good because it forces you to always adapt to the student. Hope that helps!

When it came to songs or movies, I would remember them verbatim like a recording in my head. Nowadays I don't have that as much. In fact it seems to be gradually going away entirely. I still remember a lot of music and movie dialogue from my childhood, but I haven't made a lot of new memories in that same fashion. I also used to write music, And now that this skill is diminishing it's harder and harder to keep songs in my head that I'm working on. Is this a form of auditory memory or is it something else? I'm concerned that I am losing some aspect of my memory that I used to heavily rely on, while strengthening my memory in other ways with coping strategies i've developed for the areas I've been historically deficient in. It seems odd that I used to be able to remember things I heard like a recording in my head but I still had problems with Heard instructions and all the other things associated with auditory memory… for a long time a figured I just had a really good memory for patterns that I heard, since music is rhythmic and has melodies and stuff, and movies I've seen so many times they'd just download to my long-term memory… But now I'm not too sure. I don't think my pattern recognition has suffered… I'm not sure what's going on. Thoughts?

      When we talk about auditory memory we're usually thinking about it in terms of short term memory. In other words, if I say out loud an address or a line from a book, can you repeat it back exactly. Long term memory, which is mostly what you're mentioning here, is a different skill. Anything you do or hear repetitively over a period of time, should eventually make its way into your long term memory. Unless it's affecting for day to day life or job, I wouldn't worry about not being able to remember song lyrics or movie scenes from a decade ago. You probably attached certain emotions or memories to those things, and they stuck in your mind.

    Hi, my 8 years old son got very good memories for thing he is interested in like Pi number, world map country, telephone number, planets, spelling, more but if someone tells him a story and ask questions then it seems hard for him. How can I help him ?

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Practice what he isn't good at. Start with telling him a 2 or 3-sentence story and then ask him a question. Over time increase to longer stories and more complicated questions. It's like any other skill. Start where he is and then increase in difficulty as he improves.

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can improve at home by having someone read to you a string of random number and letters every day, and you try to repeat them back. As it gets easier, you keep adding more and more numbers/letters.

As a result I hv zero benefit when I attend lectures. I am good academically because I hv to re-read and understand the subject when i am by myself. please help.

    If low auditory memory
    Cause us to not to njoy music

    • @SharpCookie
      @SharpCookie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I don't believe low auditory memory would change your ability to enjoy music, but it would probably make it more difficult to learn to play an instrument for example. It would also make it harder for you to memorize music or hear a mistake when you've hit the wrong note. But as I've said in the video, auditory memory is a skill you can improve. In fact, learning to play an instrument would help sharpen this skill because you're forced to listen carefully.

      @@swapnachandran5693 Every person is unique, so there's no way someone can give you a simple "cure" after knowing only a couple things about you. You may possibly have a type of learning disability or more than one type. You may have something psychological that is impacting your learning. At some point, I would recommend you get evaluated by a professional. And also private coaching or tutoring would probably be beneficial. There's no one-size-fits-all solution.

      Not sure you know what auditory memory means. It refers to the ability to remember the acoustic signature of a sound, sometimes referred to acoustic memory. It's when you have a song stuck in your head after repeatedly hearing it. It's when you hear a sound you haven't head in 40 years such as the sound of a particular make of car starting and can easily recognize as your granddad's Mercury Montego. It's when you recognize someone's familiar voice over the phone. Tone, timbre and harmonics signature is sufficiently stored in your brain.

      @@socksumi If you do a simple google search, this is the first result... www.edubloxtutor.com/auditory-memory/. Hopefully that article will help you get a better understanding of what auditory memory is because it is not as you describe it. Perhaps you've studied music and are attempting to relate it to that. I'm not sure.

    • @socksumi
      @socksumi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SharpCookie You are conflating auditory memory with auditory learning. The brain may be perfectly able to recall what was said including recognition of the tone and voice harmonics (that is perceptual)... but it may have difficulty conceptualizing the meaning behind what was said... that is learning.
      When I was in school I memorized my french dialogues perfectly. I can still recite much of it but ask me if I understood the dialogue? Not so much. My memory of the words and the voices was excellent but my conceptual ability to translate and derive meaning was not. The later I think is what you are talking about. But it's not the same as memory retention of an acoustic event.

      @@socksumi Please read the article I sent which is the very first result on Google when one searches for "auditory memory." I have spent a lot of time studying this and working with children with learning disabilities who have poor auditory memory. I have done several trainings on this as well with experts in cognitive development. You are welcome to disagree with the experts, but to claim that I don't understand what I am speaking on is simply not correct. If you've also worked with over a hundred children with learning disabilities or taken trainings on this topic, I'd be interested in hearing your experience with that. If not, this is probably not a topic that you should be educating others on.
