    Great video! I have been living full time in motorhome for the better part of 4 years and have loved it, but looking to convert a bluebird microbus in about 3-4 years. One thing I've learned is that RVs have a lot of bells and whistles that I can live without!

      Oh yeah. Or if you set something up yourself, you can pick and choose which components are most important (wood burning stove for example) and focus on more high end equipment. But the very best thing about not buying an RV is avoiding the awful, awful interior decor. :O

    Condensation is always a pain to deal with in tight spaces. I use small 12 volt fans in each corner to push air through the living space. And, instead of electro/mechanical means of dehumidifying I built hidden storage for Dri-Z-Air containers. Your project looks fun!

    Two suggestions I would give you.. 1) you should look out in your community for public spaces where you COULD host a party or entertain. Many apartment complexes have party rooms and many other places have the option where you could host an event. Simply trying that would build your confidence in knowing you can live such lifestyle knowing that regardless of your home you can still have a party or a gathering from time to time without feeling like you NEED to rely on somebody else's house . 2) many motels and hotels allow small pets, you should really have a foldable pet carrier for your cat so you can take your cat on public transit or other methods such as a rental car or an uber/taxi. Plus a foldable litter box and a backpack with supplies ready to go in a moments notice in case you really do have to move out to a hotel for a day or two to get your bus fixed. It's very empowering being comfortable with difficult situations. Like you mentioned you can always take a hot shower at the gym a perfect idea! Stuff like that help empower yourself and your independence. Continue to work on overcoming the negative aspects of your lifestyle that way maybe next year IF you were to re-do this video it would be just you sitting there with your cat having nothing to say cause there really wouldn't be any more downsides to your home lifestyle ;)
    Just a suggestion. Best of luck and thanks for sharing.

    • @agrayson5400
      @agrayson5400  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CandyLaStar I'm super lucky to have an amazing bunch of friends in PDX with lots of community houses, and they've been more than happy to share space for things. It's more so the cozy, personal level of hosting a good friend that I miss...maybe a caravan with a guest bus? :-P As per the cat, indeed! I have everything you suggested in place, plus I also have a small car as my daily transportation when Bessie is at home base. I don't view any of these as negative aspects, rather as trade offs, compromises, and perhaps things to adjust while thinking about future bus conversions :)

    If bus is diesel consider diesel stove, water heater. Webasto is great brand and unlike propane doesn't add moisture to bus in NW. Also some only sip at diesel tank, used on boats frequently.

    My 58 bus is the same size, no room to store anything, I have a portable shower, so I shower outside in a shower tent that helps with condensation, and I will be putting in my woodstove as for I haven't lived in it in winter yet, but cold cold, cold. my composting toilet I keep outside aswell. Its gonna be a challenge to figure out, how im carrying wood, fue,l generator, im putting a roof rack up top, but solar panels as well, and wallmart sells moisture wicks, I will have to try it out. my bus has propane heat but im not keen on running propane for my heat source. Enjoyed the video :)

    • @agrayson5400
      @agrayson5400  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +2000talon Ya, propane will give you a very sweaty bus! One of the nice things with the helio camp shower is I use so little water that I don't really notice additional water/condensation issues from it.

    I have a suggestion for your kitchen countertop space problem if you were to put some more plywood on hinges you could extend your countertop out and when it is not needed folded up out of the way all you would need would be a leg or two on the opposite end as the hinges and you can make the legs removable or put them on hinges as well so they fold up and away hope this helps

    • @agrayson5400
      @agrayson5400  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I Just got off work and saw that you posted a new video. You must have been busy lately because I haven't noticed any new videos till now. That's a good thing as money is green. Any how I'm trying to find more time to work on my bus, and get her to the point where I feel that she is mechanically bullet proof before I invest any time or $ on her future roof deck, shower system, dry heating system, latrine etc... luckily I'm just a few replaced sensors away ( the bus engine has a on board computer) from the open road. Which is nice because I can hook up my code scanner, and pretty much pin point the issue. I'm a Chef in downtown Nashville, and I'm consumed by work so it's hard to find the time to turn a wrench especially this time of year.So far I've changed the oil, oil filter, new secondary battery, air filter, fuel filter, diesel fuel treatment for the injectors.And I was wondering if you would mind if I shared your videos on Facebook? Only because I feel you and I are on the same page with interest concerning a minimalist lifestyle. And also I know you mentioned the "Navigator Wood Stove" but did you come across the "Cubic Mini Wood Stove" ? They are built in Canada just as bullet proof, and compact, and half the cost. And there is no 12 month waiting list. Please make more videos. I know your busy, but they are really inspiring, and informative. Sorry for the long comment. Oh and before I forget. .you look great.

    Great video. Much of what you mentioned applies to most any vehicle you live in...extreme hot and cold are a problem for sure. NOTE that I have found school busses are not allowed in most RV parks I have come across so plan on boondocking most of the time. School buses are frowned upon in California in general due to the free spirit movement of the 60's. I just stick to southern Utah for the Winter (try Quartzsite, AZ to see if you like it) and drift north to see relatives and higher elevations in the Summer months. It wonderful. Find a friend with a farm in the northwest that will let you stay from June through September top avoid most of the heat ..but not all. Have good ventilation for sure. Insulate everything you can....even if it is just carpet glued to the metal. Stay away from unvented propane heaters as they spew out a lot of humidity. A "dry" heat like wood is amazing at helping keep things dry. There are some great propane heaters that are vented yet propane is a bit spendy and you have to run to town to refill. Solar is awesome but can stay on your wishlist for awhile. Whoops...I will shut up now.... See you on the road. Thanks for the video!!!!!

    flexiseal is basically rubber in a spray can and comes in several colors, it's a little expensive but you could do a little of the roof each month, I think I recently saw that its available as a roll on as well. if you don't have mechanic friends maybe get to know some gals with 4x4's (my daughter fixes her own truck) and have them or their guys check the suspension, other than shocks theres not much that can go bad on a rear suspension, spring breakage is rare and a 90 isn't really that old. The front suspension could need bushings and such but that's normal maintenance stuff. Great video, I had forgotten I'd subscribed. Do you belong to any van dweller pages on FB? I'm on several and they can be a big help with questions about almost anything from replacing your own belts or brakes to hygiene and cooking...

    If you're satisfied with the trade offs, that's the most important thing. Because everything is a trade off. I'm a home owner and it definitely has its downsides. I live with my back to an orange grove which means pesticide drift and occasionally being dive bombed by crop dusters. Also, if the neighbours start being asses, I can't just move away.
    I totally get what you're saying about mechanical stuff. But, I'd point out that houses made today are built to have the parts fail through planned obsolescence. . Example: when my mom took possession of the house (I inherited) the agency that built it told me up front the vent fan in the bathroom would only last 5 years. It did. To fix it you either have to go into the attic (which is painfully low over the bathroom) and replace it or hire a contractor. Likewise rural septic systems are now (by zoning codes) forced to not be of the old gravity feed variety. They have pumps and are designed to /have/ to be pumped out by a pumping service. In other words, modern houses are designed to keep contractors in business.
    All of which is to say, problems or not, I think you made the right decision. Compared to the headaches of home ownership (including bank mandated high insurance premiums, taxes, etc. etc. etc. you're in paradise! LOL

    • @agrayson5400
      @agrayson5400  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm pretty damn happy with my decision too! If i do another conversion it will be a slightly larger, newer vehicle, but then the start up costs will be significantly more. She's a solid investment for me for at least a few years.

    Sorry to hear about the w/b stove. I saw a vid about a cub versus a grizzly stove but haven't seen a vid on installation. Hope it ends well for you. Also, consider an "on demand" water heater. • @agrayson5400
      @agrayson5400  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had some minor issues....I've been combatting it by making sure all exterior spots that moisture can leak through are sealed, and I have containers of DampRid in some of the higher moisture/trouble areas (there's one spot under the bed that collects moisture no matter how well I seal the surrounding areas). I'm hoping the wood burning stove helps dry out the air in winter as well.

    Good observations! Indeed, tiny isn't always finey. Surely a lot of folks who are part of the tiny craze will find out some day. Your observation re: entertaining can be a major factor, for everyplace someone else steps or sits is, in fact your private space. I've done the tiny thing for 30-some years on and off and can relate to your comments. As to propane heat and the condensation it produces, systems that vent to the outside will prevent moisture build-up, as will a layout that allows good air circulation. Lack of that, like the corners you pointed out, are almost impossible to keep moisture free. My guess is that tiny houses on trailers will encounter similar issues over time. Your idea of a small wood stove (or rocket stove arrangement) may help solve that moisture problem. Best wishes on all that ; )

    Hello Allison, I believe that it's time for me too travel. Why you may ask. Well I'm 59 divorced helping my mom at her house she's 78. I worked most of my life. I got tired of being assaulted at my state job. I retired. I'm looking for a bus van a bit longer than yours. I'm 6'4" tall. I have thought of making it into a high top.so I can stand straight up. Any ideas? I will helping mom and going part time. Thank you.😊😊

    • @geraldhenrickson7472
      @geraldhenrickson7472 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a a lot of work to raise the roof although it looks simple. School buses come in all manner of sizes and your first question should be...how tall is it inside? At a school bus sales lot they may have one or two taller models that are 6'6" inside. Be picky about the bus you buy...get a good engine and transmission combo as it could mean the difference between 6 mpg and 12 mpg. IMHO the dream drivetrain is a detroit DT466 and an allison 3000 series 5 or 6 or 7 speed automatic. Your rep[airs will be at a minimum with the better engines and trannys. Good luck!

    Understanding that your buying something that most of the time is pulled off the line after is was beat to death and left for dead.. Yes your school bus is on its last legs in some way so when you thinking about buying one note your going to have to do some work to it and not on the inside. Drive train is a huge one, body rust, suspension is shot or on its way out.
    This old 90's bus was used when I was in school... and that was 40 years ago.. a 40 year old car.. just think about that would you drive one?? most are on there way to the scrap yard at this point or needing some real money to bring them back to life..

    • @agrayson5400
      @agrayson5400  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This bus has virtually no body rust. I've had to do some maintenance on the suspension and drive train, and I got a new transmission a little over a year ago, but again, for a 30 year old vehicle that's to be expected, and I bought her for only 2,000.
