As a Grandpa gamer who doesn’t play enough to follow a real story and just likes the hand-holding and grinding, really got me with the “Octodad”

@@coffeebreakhero3743 Probably my biggest gripe in the whole thing... Like the logical leaps aren't bad, but the lack of lore makes piecing the thing together a pain.
Like Hornburg's royalty were descended from the priests who sealed/protect the seal on Galdera, and Werner destabilized the country so he could go looking for the Gate (as to why he stopped I don't get). So, Olberic isn't just from Hornburg, he was the right hand of the King, the last guardian of the Gate.
As for Primrose, the Crows are a part of the Obsidians, the large crime syndicate that operates in Orsterra, and I just chalked it up to the Obsidians are also looking for the Dragonstones/Gate and probably helped in shady dealings with the Cult, Werner, or Yvon and learned of the Gate's existence through one of them. Especially since the two Obisidian agents in Grandport are after Tressa's Journal, I'm assuming to look for evidence of the Gate.
But yeah, the lore and interconnected storylines are somewhat loose at best. And I get why it was dome that way, because the game's focus is on each of their individual stories, but damn it'd been nice to see a fully realized epic and have the characters realize that there is something greater than themselves at work here.
@@coffeebreakhero3743 hornburg directly was targeted to fall due to them having the gates of finis. Primrose's dad also found out about the gates of finis and was going to try to stop them. Well now he's in a shallow grave out back

I love OT so much and is precisely because of the story. It ain't perfect but I love that there's no world ending threat. Is just people living and we experience their lives, even NPC have a backstory and I love that. But for second part I want more character interactions for sure.
did you play legend of heroes: trails in the sky? i am playing it atm and it's just that. very text heavy and no "end of the world" thing. has a ton of charm and there's so much depth to this world and the people living in it. i saw the text in this game is more than what's known as the lord of the rings :D

It’s biggest flaw is that the 8 stories don’t interact at all. Otherwise a good game.
Quinn Sinclair Yeah, they very, very loosely get a small thread at the end for the final sequence, but otherwise they have no reason to be companions at all. I found it hilarious when Therion says "I work alone", then 5 min later a group of adventurers offer to help, and he accepts...even though it makes zero sense in the context of what he was about to do.
I thought that was always the point, hence the octopath: eight completely paths.
ChidoriSnake Yes it was the point but it wasn’t exactly executed well. I’m not saying that they should have merged into a larger story. Keep the right unique stories but the problem was that in each story it was solely about whichever character who’s story it was. The other party members are never mentioned, or even appear in cut scenes. It’s eight solitary journeys from beginning to end with optional party members who are only their for battles. It would have been better if each path was about its primary character but a number of secondaries were involved. They could have used the path actions to force you to have certain companions at certain points for story reasons like if a plot requires that something be stolen so Therion is present for the following cutscene but made sure that you could swap out before big battles so you’re never stuck with a character you don’t use much (unless you’re in their plot line). There was a lot of wasted potential in the right path story idea. Still a good game but it could have been an amazing game if they’d gone the extra mile.
It's "Octopath Traveler", not "Onepath Octotraveler" =))
It makes it utterly boring. Almost all of the characters are cliché and their stories play out pretty much like you'd think they would. And the lack of character interaction makes the travel in-between towns really bad. It was a missed opportunity to make the game great.

im so conflicted about octopath traveller its my favorite game this year but also so very far from perfect!!! characters get stabbed from behind when theyre travelling with a party of 4 and fall into traps as if they didnt have party members. wow

It did EVENTUALLY get ported to Steam. Just shy of a year after the initial Switch version.

I know I'm late, but you have to complete some of the act 4 sidequests and the hidden 33rd chapter with 9 (NINE) boss fights to find out how all the characters have interwoven stories.
plot twist: they dont. just beat the final boss couple of days ago and literally nothing happens. 30 sec talk from irrelevant characters and gg.
not worth the 30+h grind just to beat the boss.
@@CoNteMpTone The 8 bosses before the final boss all drop a book that explains the character's connections to the overarching story. It's not much at all, but it's there.

Im completely convinced that octopath traveler is, despite its cool graphics, fast paced combat system, semi-interesting characters and pretty world, not a great game.
Its not BAD, i dont regret playing through it and grinding for the final boss, spending a total of 63h on the game. But would i recommend it? No. Would i tell my son about it if he asks "what were the best JRPGs you ever played dad?" No.
Its a very forgettable game that was a decent bit of fun. Moreso than its scammy cashgrab sequel and the completely underdeveloped triangle strategy.
A great example, the entire company, of marketing beating quality.

I think this may be the only pixel art game of the last decade that looks truly interesting to me. It's pretty gorgeous, even if the vignetting is way over the top.

The anime asthetic was half the reason I got into JRPGs, honestly. It's been there since at least the SNES era. Before that I don't think pixel art was sophisticated enough to make much difference.

When it comes to leveling up one of primroses skills, bewildering grace, has the chance of getting an experience and job points multiplier, exp or jp x2, exp or jp x5, and you can even get exp or jp x100 and you even have the chance of summoning a cait, cultured cait, and chubby cait

One of my few complaints is that there's no story-related reason for the characters to travel together.
common viewer i can see alfyn and tressa inserting themselves into others but other than that, i don't see any reason for them to travel with one another...
The gate of Finis
Jumping Pedestrian None of them know of or have even heard of the gate of Finis by the time they first meet up and agree to become a party, though...
I always play Therion first since his chapter 1 doesn't make sense to have a whole group; from there I just assume it's a strength in numbers idea for him where he doesn't *really* want to help but if he wants extra strength he's gonna have to (at first, anyways)
I can come up with ideas on why most of them would travel with him, especially if they didn't know he was a thief at first, although I'm still kind of unsure why the "Noble" characters let him do what he does. I could see Ophillia and/or Alfyn, while possibly not approving of it, at least going "well he's had a rough life so he had no choice" especially since Ophillia has an oddly similar situation to Therion.
Tressa just keeps trying to handcuff him every chance she gets.
Olberic might be uncertain but at least since after chapter one it's stealing to return to the rightful owners it's arguably not as bad? Idk. One fanfic handles it pretty well though where most of them don't know he's a thief at first, each of them finding out one by one that he's a thief. Then when people react badly the other travelers vouch and they warily take it. So yeah there's not a super good reason unfortunately but at least there's room to try.
Although I think it'd be funny if all of them kept bumping into each other, even if they traveled solo-
Maybe they meet on the road once or twice, only for Cyrus and Tressa to meet at Quarrycrest and Alfyn and Ophillia at Saintsbridge.

Cyrus is more Professor Layton than Phoenix Wright. Ever the gentleman and an actual professor. he even literally says "Once a puzzle is placed before me, I simply cannot rest until I've worked out a solution."
There's actually a true end that gives a reason to bring all the characters together.
That is true but unfortunately you don't find this out until after all the characters meet up. They just all conveniently agree to team up (Even the thief and the betrayed girl on a vengeance quest-) and THEN you see the true end.
Mind you I haven't played the true end yet I just know the basic premise of it. If it gives a genuine reason as to how all 8 of them were brought together I'll shut up now lol

I honestly wasnt expecting the game and its characters to be as interesting as they were. Usually there seems to be very little effort put into square's portable games, save a few exceptions.

Not a 100 hour grind if you just use bewildering dance, and we crack on jrpgs for being long and grind yet Western RPGs all have huge, extremely grind open world's where everyone and their mothers mother has a dumb quest of some kind

I find The Witcher 3 hard to play because of the combat. I find JRPG's a joy because of the 'text boxes'. Each to their own.
