I don't think it was necessarily the deaths themselves that made it so tragic, but the fact that they all, for the most part, ended up dying alone with only their own unique idea of warrior's pride to fight for which changed in a lot of cases. Souji always fought for Kondou; however, his end battle was for Hijikata. Harada fought to protect civilians because he thought it was the right thing to do even if it meant he wouldn't be going back to best friend, Shinpachi. Saito who idealized Hijikata chose to lead the Aizu clan into the last battle even though it meant separating from Hijikata. As for Hijikata, well he lost everything he cared about with the Shinsengumi, so he put all his last bit of strength in protecting Chizuru. So for everyone most of the trauma was in the separation of the Shinsengumi and changing values at that time. You could say Chizuru was the worse off of all of them all in having to live with losing everyone she cared about. Even so, I think Saito put it pretty well in his quotation, "With the passage of time, many things change. World affairs, ideologies, even the Shinsengumi...Even so, I do not mean that everything has changed. And what I believe in are the things that stay the same." Although, people fight for different reasons there are some things that are always morally right, like protecting innocence and peace and happiness. They all stayed true to themselves and protected what their life's purpose was, even if it resulted in their tragic ending.
@@deathbykonami5487 That's the point. Some things are worse then death. Even knowing it would kill them, Even knowing the effect it would have...It gave them the strength to keep fighting for the things that mattered more then life itself.
marblecity I agree with you on that this show was amazing and the fact that the characters were very passionate about there Beliefs, and what they stood for and it was really cool to see them stand for what they believe in and fight for what's right I thought the show really put a really good view on what is right, and they still had each other, but they separated during the anime and they still had their own believes and what they fought for it was just awesome to see how these characters still had each other and it was the best anime I've ever watched
In real life: -Hajime Saito lives to be 72, has 3 kids, and dies of stomach ulcers (apparently he was a heavy drinker) -Souji Okita lives to be 24 and dies of tuberculosis -Toshiro Hijikata lives to be 34, and dies while riding a horse during battle, when he gets shot in the back and the bully shatters his spine
Funny thing too, you never SEE Saito die in the series technically. You just see him charging in. The animators did this on purpose, knowing what really became of him in history. They did this so fans could easily guesstimate that he basically fought like a sonofab*** >w> and got away, but by then it was all over so there was no point following up on him. In a way it was also on purpose cause thats how he survived, he basically 'disppeared' for a long while. As for the anime itself, if they visually showed Saito surviving, he'd be the odd one out from the cast of characters, they were going for full out angst with this series, so they couldn't let him stand out despite the truth of his fate. This was the best they could do it, show what everyone 'thought' happened, but cleverly NOT show what became of him at the very end. He got a body count with everyone else EXCEPT him. This trick is used a lot in film to make ones fate ambigious and up to interpretation.
Marguerite Saliba It was true that Souji was the best samurai--same goes for the anime. And Saitou's personality was sort of the same. It was also true that Hijikata and Harada were good-looking.
OMG, when Souji and Heisuke died. I cried. But whether Hijikata died was left ambiguous... OMG when all of the Shinsengumi people appeared in the sky, I cried when Saitou and Souji appeared. They were my faves.
+Marina Zhang watch the movie guys . better animation and more like a real demon with power fights , different from the original one which is mainly fought with swordskill and outcome is different .
Crying like there was no fucking tomorrow. How could you do this to me? HOW CAN YOU MAKE ME GROW AFFECTION TOWARDS A CHARACTER AND THE TAKE HIM AWAY FROM ME??
I started tearing up at the beginning and bawled when Heisuke died. I tried to stop but when she saw them in the sky I completely lost and now I can't stop crying and when Hijikata said her name in the end made me cry harder.
I've kept coming back to this video every two-three months for almost three years now! No matter how many times I watch it I always cry. R.I.P. Shinsengumi
I could not live with the ending, they made us feel so much towards the characters and they had to let us ship Chizuru with Hijikta then kill him off, the anime was incredible, and my heart aches for poor Chizuru.
Okay I watched a lot of sad anime like Romeo x Juliet, Angel Beats, Clannad, Terror in Tokyo, Shigatsu wa kimi no uso, Tokyo Ghoul etc. but Hakouki was the worst. I cried for days. And my sister had to comfort me. It took me a while to recover from it and I will never watch it again, never! The worst part was knowing that Chizuru and Hijikata have no happy ending. Chizuru ended up alone and her great love died. In other anime there was always something like an almost happy ending or just a peaceful ending. But Hakouki showed that the reality is not that. The reality is what happened to Chizuru. And that happens every day in this world. We lose people and they don't come back to us. They only remain in our hearts. And I think that's why this series hit me so badly😔💔
Even if I love all the characters, souji's death was the most beautiful and heartbreaking to me. R.I.P souji! Now time to watch some hakuouki SSL to forget all this!
Its almost 8 years since i watch this anime. And now im here to watch it again. I can still feel the pain and sadness of this anime!😢😢😢 i cant really move on.. One of the most favorate anime i ever see in my life.. Even though so many years has past. HAKOUKI SHINSENGUMI❤❤❤ it really breaks my heart💔💔💔
ArielHoney22 this girl T_T i feel the same like I'm about to go to japan a pay my respects to them i just need to find out were they are all buried at i know kondo and Hijikata are buried somewhere near each other near a train station in japan
i don't think i regret it because even if i haven't watched it i would cry every day it has been 3 days since i finished watching the anime and i still cry every day even before sleeping i am so depressed i can't take my breath from all of the depression.
I watched this anime with expectations of love and what not, not sadness and so watching all my favorite characters die in the sad, alone ways they did just took my emotions and stomped them into the dirt. TT ^ TT
To die under the same Sakura tree as in the opening music just brings everything full circle....it doesn't make it any less painful though....I can never watch this scene without crying and it's killing me inside...
I saw this anime so many years ago, and now it's feels so nostalgic. I love all of them, my favourite is and always be Okita, but Harada is so special to me, too. Seeing him suffer like that, with his hand on his wound and with his trumble voice is so sad. 01:55 Even more sad because he said he has to hurry to meet Shinpachi again. My boys, I will cry!
Despite how much I love this series, I swear to don’t watched it again. After almost 10 years since I knew this one, but this is still emotional and overwhelming 😭
Saito Hajime lived the longest in Shinsengumi. You can google his name and will find so many of his pictures. It is a good anime and the saddest one I've ever watched so far.
noooooooo dammit i am still crying after 3 days of finishing the anime i even can't sleep without crying T_T okita, saito, harada, heisuke, shinpachi, hijikata, kondo, yamaziki, inoue, sannan shinsengumi you will continue to live on in our hearts i loooooooove you okita does anyone know how shinpachi died
And what I'm getting from the anime's ending, I think Shinpachi got overrun by the bad side and died, but it didn't show his death. That makes me really sad :( I think Heisuke, Harada, and Shinpachi were the coolest and most friends ever. That one scene where Harada and Shinpachi take Chizuru by the arms to that festival place is one of my favorite scenes in the anime.
+Titilayo Aderemi-Williams it shows Saito dies by showing the clip where he leads that army in Aizu. It had dramatic music and all. Plus, at the very end when Chizuru looks up, all of the Shinsengumi are together again because they died for their Banner of Truth.
+Lydia Barrientos I'm basing what I said of real history. According to stuff I read Saito didn't die in the Shinsengumi, he died in his old age from stomach ulcer.
Just when I thought I've gotten over Hakuouki... then I found this.I watched Hakuouki twice though, 1st alone and then with my bro and my mom *yes my mom got hooked on this anime and cried*...No matter what I do I end up crying. I love Hakuouki though despite the heart breaking story. I wonder though how Chizuru lived on after that... *now about the pool of tears around me*
According to history, Saito didn't die during the Battle of Aizu. He lived his life and passed away at 1915 at the age of 71. There's also been debates about Hijikata's "death" at the end of the series. If he really died, wouldn't he turned to dust like the rest of them?
uhhhhhhhhhhhh ; - ; Yamazaki's is still in my respect and the way he died with a smile n badly injured body is just sad. BUT I STILL CRY IN EVERY DEATHS OF THEM 😂 GODDEMIT. Oh, based on history... Saitou actually lived until aged of 70-sumthing. He didnt died tho. These are all connected to the history except for the Rasetsu pshh. Its somewhat, 80% accurate to the real shisengumi history
yaucchi true Saitou and Shinpachi did reach there 70's but still historically the rest of them didn't even make it to 35 most of them did die in there 20's..... and its tearing me apart T_T
Its late at night here and im watching this... im crying soo hard and even hugging my okita plushie ;_; Harada made me teary and later in that episode okita died.... to have 2 favs to die in 1 episode was TOOO MUCH FOR ME ;_____;
Every time...every time freakin time....I cant help but cry!!! This is like my fifth time watching this show too! WHY MUST MY HEART BE DESTROYED BY THESE FEELS?! WHY?!!!
After watching this anime, I read about the characters in real life. Some of their stories were so sad. Most of them didn't live past 30. Such a sad story but it is a fantastic anime. =(
Who Else is re watching their deaths? 2019 here! I cried so much when Okita and heisuke died ;-; Why do the good ones always die???? Okita was my fave and Heisuke was my other fave.
FREAKING DEPRESSING SONG AT THE END....... I MEAN ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL MY EYES WITH TEARS AND WATCHING THE DEATH SCENES THEN SEEING THEM ALL GATHERED UP IN THE END (while dead) DA SOOO SIGH YAD!!!!!!!! UWAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!! T^T
Why did I ever decided to come back to this anime! I watched it once and vowed to never have anything to with it again as it made me so sad but a year later, I'm back here and still crying like no tomorrow!
I'm cry so hard right now!!! Ahhhh!!! I finished this anime like 2 years ago!!! And this is the first anime I ever watched! No joke! I'm still crying!!! Wahhhh!!!!!! In all seriousness I am crying...
... I cried during all of these painful deaths, hopefully, Everyone can hereby memorize what they have done... and what they needed to finish.... Rest in peace, Yamazaki Susumu, Isami Kondou, Sanosuke Harada, Okita Souji, Hajime Saitou, Shinpachi Nagakura, Heisuke Todo, Keisuke Sannan, Hijikata Toshizō...
Rose Black Saito actually survived and is a character in the movie Samurai X Trust and Betrayal (you can find that on youtube) and the anime that follows that movie Ruroni Kenshin. He's REALLY awesome in both the movie and the anime! If you plan on watching them watch the movie first!
+Rose Black You're very welcome! He's not a big part in the movie but he does have a few awesome scenes. However in the anime you'll see a LOT of Saito in his awesomeness :D:D:D:D
I dont wanna feel so sad so I just remember how they lived(or at least longer) in each of their respective routes (and I read the fanfics of how they're so happy and fluffy). But I guess that doesn't save Inoue, Yamazaki, and Kondou, huh?
No matter how many times I watch this when Hijikata dies I cry so much my eyes hurt from crying. I love him so much. Even in the movie when he survived I still cried. This should be a try not to cry challenge. 😭😭😭
The people going on about who was their favorite character but I just want to say that I loved them all and I cried when they died. For those who have watched the TV series, you should check out the 2 remake movies that cover the 2 seasons. The ending was very emotional and the animations were absolutely beautiful, this is imo one of Studio Deens best masterpiece. The show made me love all the characters and when they died I felt so sad.
I'm thinking of rewatching cuz I was reminded of it. So there are movies summarising it? Which movies do u suggest? Also are the movies actually better than the anime?
@@artistflare9072 There are two movies that covers the anime series briefly but the main point was to adapt it with the other ending that was written for the VN. You must watch the anime first because it provides more detail about what happens, then when you watch the movies, you'll know what's going on in the brief details shown and then you can enjoy the movie despite it being brief cos you know the things the anime showed, I know you feel like “I already know what's gonna happen” but watching the 2 movies wasn't that case for me. Some people just watch the movies because they think its better and newer(which it is) but they make a mistake when they get confused because they didn't watch the anime version. You have Movie 1:Kyoto Ranbu and Movie 2:Shikon Sokyu. The movie is imo better, the atmosphere of the show is so different, historical feeling and the animations are very beautiful. You must watch them. It also has very good ost done by Kawai Kenji.
@@yuh-kaehuang4154 I did my research. I've already watched the anime 5years ago. Apparently the movie is really different and brief, especially with character deaths. So I think I'm going to rewatch the anime. Sucks since I know the movies animation is much better. But thank you!
I cried so much when Heisuke, Souji and Hijikata died....I would say that my faivourite ones are Souji and Saito. My poor babe Souji why did you contracted tuberculosis?? That sneaky disease...And it was never shown that Saito died, but I guess you can pretty much understand that because he marched all alone towards the enemy and the episode ended up like that. They all had their unchanging convictions and fought hard for them till the very end...I think that is precisely what makes them TRuE WARRIORS. They were brave, didn't fear of death, they were loyal to each other and even though Heisuke once leaved Shinsengumi and so did Shinpachi and Harada in the last season, deep inside I believe that their hearts were with the Shinsengumi. The person I pity so much now, is Chizuru..She had to witness the death of the ones dearest to her and in the end she was left alone, without even her beloved one.. Toshii. It pains more, knowing that all of the Shinsengumi members are based on real life people. I think we should take life lessons from all of them, they really were true warriors.. P.S. Soujiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I never cried so much in my life before, especially the death of Souji I cried so much like I knew him in real life a long time, he is my favorite character ... I am very sad to know that they really died ...Really.... I hope they are now in a better place ... And in the anime (you guys will always be my favorites) I LOVE YOU GUYS SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH ;'(
It's sad they way they all died I've grown attached too them all and i almost cried like a baby because how lived and died to protect their home and their name in honor as the shinsegumi warriors. I also cried bc at the end when it showed their spirits and their flag in the sky I cried for that too. I've grown attached too this anime and I love it.
I believe Chizuru being naive is a compliment to this anime. If she was any darker or less dense this anime would have been really sad. I think the realism of the deaths and Chizuru's personality is a really good combination. In some way it makes you feel refreshed there is an innocent side to this story.
I know I’m VERY late but if anyone (like me) just watched this show you know it’s sad. I’m not the type of person to cry over things like this but I sobbed after watching the end of this and that’s saying something. Even when I just think about this it makes me tear up, like just the fact that pretty much all of main characters die tragic deaths hurts me 😂
My mom sorta laughed when i started to cry, she doesnt attach to the characters like i do. I got really into these characters, especially because of how honorable and just amazing they were, and to see characters you love as much as family, die, is heart breaking. I don't know why i clicked this cause im just gunna cry the more i see
If I were Chizuru, I would just kill myself. I would not have been able to live having lost all those people that she cared for. Sano and Souji were my favourites, especially Sano. So for them to die in the same episode... I cried so much, I was literally depressed. I had to take a break, and then when I came back to see the next episode, I realized that Shinpachi died, and then Hajime died, and then Keisuke and Heisuke, and then in the end Toshi. This series really just tore my heart out, especially seeing all of them going to heaven. I`m just happy that they are safe now, and together.
Chizuru isn't usless. She may not be great at fighting but you have to admit she is increadibly brave. Also, when the day comes that y'all are willing to impersinate the opposite sex and then go around the country to find your father, only to end up involved in a bunch of fighting and run headfirst in said fighting to protect people you just met, then you can say she's useless.
I Dodged a bullet with dis one my god.... I saw like 4 n half episode from season 1 n wanted to knw whn the romance will take place.... I just wanted an normal reverse harem with lot of flirting n absolutely didn't want an tragedy..... I hate sad endings n I'm glad dat I looked for spoilers 😮💨
As for this video... I am always so entouched when Hijikata wakes up with the thought of Souji, while Souji is near there, fighting to save him... It feels more like a father-and-son relationship than just a simple friendship... --Hijikata is much older than Souji, somewhere in the anime there is a scene where Hijikata is looking at a child like Souji, while Koudou is caressing the brat' s hair--
WAIT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i thought hijikata lives and saito but no everyone dies?.......... i honestly feel a empty hole in my heart a big one all this time I thought he lives but no all of them die....... TT__TT I need a hug
kpoploverXD SHINeeSuperJUnior like i think i should have never rewatched the anime and let my mind believe that he got to live on .... let me go spoil this moment and tell my sister the horrible truth

According to history, Saito didn't die during the Battle of Aizu. He lived his life and passed away at 1915 at the age of 71.
There's also been debates about Hijikata's "death" at the end of the series. If he really died, wouldn't he turned to dust like the rest of them?
uhhhhhhhhhhhh
; - ; Yamazaki's is still in my respect and the way he died with a smile n badly injured body is just sad.
BUT I STILL CRY IN EVERY DEATHS OF THEM 😂 GODDEMIT.
Oh, based on history... Saitou actually lived until aged of 70-sumthing. He didnt died tho.
These are all connected to the history except for the Rasetsu pshh. Its somewhat, 80% accurate to the real shisengumi history
yaucchi true Saitou and Shinpachi did reach there 70's but still historically the rest of them didn't even make it to 35 most of them did die in there 20's..... and its tearing me apart T_T
watching this again made me cry :( Hakuouki is one of the best anime ever
The ending hit me like a bitch man when the souls of the shinshengumi started appearing.
Its late at night here and im watching this... im crying soo hard and even hugging my okita plushie ;_; Harada made me teary and later in that episode okita died.... to have 2 favs to die in 1 episode was TOOO MUCH FOR ME ;_____;
This is too sad! I cried so badly for all of them T__T
Thank you, in the memory of all the worries of the Shinsengumi.
"under the banner of truth we all fight for whats right forever" Shinsingumi 😭
Every time...every time freakin time....I cant help but cry!!! This is like my fifth time watching this show too! WHY MUST MY HEART BE DESTROYED BY THESE FEELS?! WHY?!!!
After watching this anime, I read about the characters in real life. Some of their stories were so sad. Most of them didn't live past 30. Such a sad story but it is a fantastic anime. =(

I cried so much when Okita and heisuke died ;-; Why do the good ones always die????
Okita was my fave and Heisuke was my other fave.
Now chizuru is going to be alone😢
If she chose Saito and not Hijikata she will be not alone xD because Saito didnt die ^^

Why did I ever decided to come back to this anime! I watched it once and vowed to never have anything to with it again as it made me so sad but a year later, I'm back here and still crying like no tomorrow!
...I CANT BELIEVE IM WATCHING THIS AGAIN. NOO LEMME GET AWAY WHILE I CANNNN
why the fuck all these pretty boys dying
I'm cry so hard right now!!! Ahhhh!!! I finished this anime like 2 years ago!!! And this is the first anime I ever watched! No joke! I'm still crying!!! Wahhhh!!!!!! In all seriousness I am crying...
The very last scene where they all appear in their Shinesengumi uniforms one by one really made me cry even harder TT^TT
They were such brave warriors
I can't stop crying! :'( It's like my room is a swimming pool now...
People stop hating the girl
She doesn't need to fight, the show's central focus is the shinsengumi. They're the ones that fight
Right in the feels...
All the deaths at once... guh my heart...can't take anymore...
8:41. I cried😭😭😭 HAJIME SAITO!!!
Rose Black If you're interested I can tell you more about that.
+Jay Sama ok :)
Rose Black Saito actually survived and is a character in the movie Samurai X Trust and Betrayal (you can find that on youtube) and the anime that follows that movie Ruroni Kenshin. He's REALLY awesome in both the movie and the anime! If you plan on watching them watch the movie first!
+Jay Sama oh thank you!! I'll watch them!
+Rose Black You're very welcome! He's not a big part in the movie but he does have a few awesome scenes. However in the anime you'll see a LOT of Saito in his awesomeness :D:D:D:D
I know for a fact I will not make it through this video without crying.
I can barely tell that Hijikata is voiced by Gintama's Sakamoto. They're total opposites.
2019 still crying
I dont wanna feel so sad so I just remember how they lived(or at least longer) in each of their respective routes (and I read the fanfics of how they're so happy and fluffy). But I guess that doesn't save Inoue, Yamazaki, and Kondou, huh?
Idk why I keep coming back to see this it’s so sad and I always end up depressed ...
Soujii saitou oh my god i´m crying.
I cry every time, it's just so emotional especially when you get attached to the characters!!
I still cry when i see it again. So sad, i hoped that Shinpachi still alive but....
That's so heartbreaking
How they are good friends ❤️❤️
And I am still now crying 😭😭😭🥺🥺😭❤️❤️
i cried so hard on every single death 😭😭
It's not tears, it is rain...
This anime will be in my heart forever 💔
No matter how many times I watch this when Hijikata dies I cry so much my eyes hurt from crying. I love him so much. Even in the movie when he survived I still cried. This should be a try not to cry challenge. 😭😭😭
Heisuke and Sannan-san's death's meade me cry! TT^TT
I will always cry at this. I love all of them so much.
もう、いつ見ても総司の回と左之助の回は泣ける!!
the tears won't stop, they won't stop. i loved this anime.
It doesn't matter how many times i watch these scenes over I still sob like a baby every time, whenever i need a good cry i always watch this.
Call me heartless but I really cannot see the Shinsengumi the same way again after watching how Gintama treated the characters 😂😂
Okita, Souji, Toshizou were my favorite. I wanted to see Chizuru with all of them and even Kazama was pretty cool.
:''( I can't say how many times I watched this Anime and every time again I cry like a littel Baby..
I love this Anime !!!
薄桜鬼はヤバいよ……泣くもん😭😭😭沖田さーん‼️
And in the anime (you guys will always be my favorites) I LOVE YOU GUYS SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH ;'(
Layla Ameer Because.... they wanna..... eh.... break our hearts untill they LITRELLY break, I think maye....
Why did saito have to die!!! 😫😩
+Karin Uchiha he didn't die, he survived :) (lived till his 71 years)
+Princess Yona no they really died only saito, he lived untile 71
I can't be the only one who thinks Kondo and Inoue's deaths were the most heartbreakening?
I cried so hard...
So I stayed up all night to feel depressed...
I can never watch this without crying and ive tried so far 8 times and everytime I have ended in tears
this is too heartbreaking!
Souji's and Saitou's deaths were the most heartbreaking...But it fitted to them the most. It showed how they were in the end.
世界一泣ける動画
I believe Chizuru being naive is a compliment to this anime. If she was any darker or less dense this anime would have been really sad. I think the realism of the deaths and Chizuru's personality is a really good combination. In some way it makes you feel refreshed there is an innocent side to this story.
by the way saitou did not die in history
really ?
mohamed jaber yes aizu surrendered so he was taken to an prison camp then joined the imperial police force and died in 1915
+Matthew Robertson thanks for the info, didn't know that.
Saito is one of my favourite character.
mohamed jaber no problem

The way all shinsengumi died makes me cry and cry when I watched this........ the true warriors death
いつ見ても泣ける・・・(*p_q*)
I NEVER CRIED SO HARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE AND IT'S BEEN THREE DAYS SINCE I FINISHED THE ANIME & I CAN'T GET OVER IT.
I cried when all of them died instead of the girl it was so sad😭
It's 2019 But I still remember this and I want to cry 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
How did you even put all of these together?!?! Now I'm in a verge of tears 😢😢😢
