I've been living in Arizona for over 10 years, haven't fished much since I moved from California. You've helped me learn a new style of fishing, thank you. Appreciate the hard work, keep it up!
Two ideas for bait to try there. One is simple - Green Giant niblet corn. Niblets are harder than normal canned corn. Easy to stack on a hook. - Wheaties. Take a box of Wheaties cereal. Open the box and crush the cereal to a rough powder. Pour the powder into an old sock. Soke the sock in the river water. Squeeze the water out of the sock. Invert the sock and pull out the ball of Wheaties dough. Press the dough into a pancake like object on a flat surface in the sun and let it dry out for 15 minutes. Break off chunks of the pancake and ball up onto a hook. Dough should be sticky like playdough. Carp and catfish go nuts for that.
I spent a day in Northern Mesa with a gentleman who was fishing the canals to feed his family of 12. None of the fish he caught looked even remotely healthy, but he said they were so much better than the fish he would catch in Mexico City.
That is nuts that there is a variety of fish in those canals. I would have not thought anything would be living in them but there they are, thriving. Would be so fun to have the canal in you back yard and practice fishing whenever you wanted to.
I used to do a night watch on some of the areas that they were maintaining and fixing, but I did not know they had a lot of these areas that were right out in the open. I thought they were all fenced off, but I did see a lot of big fish in there, and when they overflow, they leave a lot from sea urchins I guess or whatever you call them snails , but there are tons of shells, laying all over the place
Love your fishing spirit! Even in the middle of town, we must fish! I just hope they keep water in that canal all year? I would hate to see those fish suffer needlessly. Awesome video!
if you go carp fishing again, try top water bread, easy way to do it is grab a bit with crust and white, fold it so its size you want, take the hook hold it wrap the line around the bread 3 times, then take the line and hook it around the hook pull it tight a little and throw it out there, always works :)
I fish pike, specifically targeting large fish, but I also have fun fishing Carp with my little girl using bread and corn. A very intelligent and elusive fish at times, and they put up a great fight.
@peterbaillif4607 I live in Wisconsin, which is farther than Lake Mary, I'll bet. We have a lot of pike here, and Musky. I'm going this weekend looking for those.

When I was a young child of eight we lived on a farm outside of Boise, Idaho. At the bottom of our property, was a small ditch, narrow enough that eight year old boys could jump across it. It was fed by a scalping weir on an irrigation canal and returned water to the Boise River. My Dad took my younger Brother who was six, my buddy who was nine and I upto a creek in the mountains and taught us how to fish streams. So, the next week we asked if we could go fish the drainage ditch. And he let us take off with our gear and a bunch of night crawlers. Over the next four hours, between lunch, and when Mom called us up to the house for dinner, we caught sixty some trout in the ten to twelve inch range. Dad was shocked. Mom was concerned, because the catch limit was four fish.
Little circle hooks cut down on the gut hooks significantly. Great video though! Reminds me of fishing the river in San Antonio, never quite knew what you'd pull outta the water.
Used to go all the time with my mom behind the hospital on Southern & Dobson. We've caught all kinds of bass, sunfish, blue gill out of there, plenty of cats and I actually landed a walleye once as well. My kiddos loved canal fishing with my mom.
Arizona actually has quite a bit of water [Saguaro, Canyon, Apache, Roosevelt, Powell, Havasu too many to list]. We even have more boat registrations, per capita, than Florida. I have only caught channel cat and carp in the SRP canals.
Great fishing in a small canal. At least you don't have to fight through brush and trees like us in missouri to fish a small creek, but dodging traffic could be exciting. Thanks for taking us along. Be blessed. My friend.
