Mazda BT-50 2021 review: How does the XTR 4x4 dual-cab ute with automatic suit family life?

- You want lots of space in a family car with extra room for when you go away? Enter the ute. This one is a Mazda BT50 and while I know I am not any kind of ute expert, I am here to review the BT50 from a family perspective.
You won’t hear about how it tows and how good it is off road - there are other more detailed reviews on the CarsGuide website if that’s what you’re after.
But if you want to know how the BT50 works for a real life family, and a real life mum - that would be me - keep reading.
If you’re in the ute market, you’d also be looking at cars like the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux. I’m in the middle of the range BT50 XTR which is a 4x4 and costs $57,290, before on road costs and extras.
The Mazda BT-50 makes a good family car, it’s got great interior space, an enormous boot but do make sure you get a cover for it to be usable in all conditions. There’s good safety for a family and it drives well, plus you’ll be able to take it away for long driving holidays and carry everything you need with you, especially if you’ve got a dog.

Nice review. Of course, no-one would buy this without a tray liner and a retractable cover. I'm amazed Mazda gave you a demo without those two options.
they have opted instead to give business to traditional "after market" companies who will sell those as options. Everyone except the buyer happy.
Of course people will buy it without both those things. Seen plenty already.
The inside is so waow. More like a sedan esthetics and comfort.
I hire these when I go to Ghana. Great vehicles. Have had 2 so far. Only one came with a cover.
Good point about the cover. I’m over this with my Ute (two granddaughters with bikes scooters etc) looking for a wagon.
You can always purchase a lockable canopy.
CarMakers now: lets put a big radiator grille, and it will sell as hotcakes. At this moment all of the utes have a big grill, except the amarok...😀!!
Don't you like big grills? Ik many new cars are equipped with them but I also kinda like it lol

This review summed up/answered what I have been asking car dealers.. how useful is the wide open tray as a replacement for the boot in SUV or a boot in a normal car. It’s useless, She had to fit all those boxes and items in the backseat instead!! As a family vehicle Utes are simply Not practical, get a SUV instead, with a trailer. Pathfinder comes to mind, or even an older BMW X3/X5 with diesel engine.
get a retractable cover, tray liner on aftermarket and you're good to go.

Would buy the d max version. because you get the roller cover and bed liner on the top spec one . I like the looks on the front of the d max better. the one thing I like better on the Mazda is the inside of it . on the gt model you get that nice brown leather and the air vents that look more sensible. when we took the d max for a test run we felt that the inter build on it felt a bit cheap on the doors , center console and dash. felt like a pr production car . liked the engine and transmission . only thing we felt was that it was a bit slow shifting and that it shuddered at low speeds . the seats were very comfortable and good legroom in the back .
you get the same on the top spec one in the Mazda as well. how's the legroom compared to the Mazda? similar or better?
And if you want a better "Mazda BT50" get the Isuzu Dmax X Terain, it comes with a cover. And the Mazda is really a DMAX with a different skin/ Body.
With better cupholders under the air vents too.

@@seanfenwick I think the Mazda looks girly in comparison to the DMAX. Just my opinion.
Just received one for work 😂 dangerously easy to drive. Steering is light like a car and Almost fell asleep on the highway with lane keep assist feature.

Sadly....no BT50 for the UK. A mistake by Mazda I feel as Mitsubishi is on its way out of Europe and Mazda could have picked up the slack.

3ltr turbo diesel. It’s all Isuzu’s D max just the Mazda skin over a D max.

Would have really complemented the return of the Ford Ranger.
Trying to promote this as a family car is a waste of time... its a work truck. Thats not to say you can't pick the kids up from school in it.
Mazda changed brands for BT50 and made it look feminine again ? That's why the Ford version didn't sell .
I think the grille looks a wee bit feminine, however, this isn't necessary a negative, especially if you are a good fighter. (joke :-) )
