    The Master of Wine is considered to be one of the most difficult qualifications if not the most difficult qualification in the wine world.
    Even though the qualification exists since 1953 and there are several really famous Famous Masters of Wine living and working all around the world there are currently only 417 Masters of Wine, living in 31 different countries and just 493 people have passed the MW exam since 1953.
    So you may be wondering just like I do … How the hell did Konstantin do it?! Here is the story.
    When I finished school I did not know what to do. Wine was certainly not an option as I grew up in an area of Germany where there is no wine production at all and few people drink wine. After a lot of back and forth, I decided to something that most of my friends could not understand. I did not go to university but instead did an apprenticeship at one of the best hotels in Germany. I wanted to become the Manager of a great hotel and this was how were supposed to start your career. A German apprenticeship follows a real program and I spent three years at the hotel, worked in different departments, and learned more about cooking, service, and wine at school.
    Wine was a topic that I felt drawn to pretty quickly. I liked the fact that wine combines so many things, there is the sensory side to it which is very subjective but that there is also a lot of culture, history, and science that I could discover. I started to buy books and went to more and more tastings.

    I was pleased to hear you talk about Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud in Dublin. My wife and I will be traveling in Ireland next month and we got reservations for dinner there. Their wine list isn't public as far as I can tell, so I'm really looking forward to diving into their wine book at the table.

    Cool - I also get attracted to wine by a burgundy, namely a Charmes Chambertin which was lacking the etiquette so I don‘t remember the producer. My father got it from there and returned about 50 bottles to Zurich in his american car, about 50 years ago when I still was a teenager. I will never forget that wine. Thanks for sharing your story.

    I am always really impressed that you passed this test because you have to spend such an amount of money for it and lots of people never pass the exam. I have always pretty good in learning new things from books but I never had to go working during my own studies and also I have tried many wines and spirits during the last 15 years I am still far from being good at describing them or finding out what it is in a blind tasting so its really great what you did and I am really thankful that you share your knowledge with us!

    That was really interesting. I hope you will do a video about how to taste and describe a quality wine to differentiate a cheap wine, a moderate wine, and a really nice wine. I have found some inexpensive wines that I enjoy, and I'd like to be able to describe why a $30 wine is so much more enjoyable for me than a $125 wine. I suspect there are several measures of quality, as well as subjective personal preferences that come I to play

    Great story. My first wine tasting was back in 2001 at Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk CT. Went with some friends who were already fairly knowledgeable. They talked me in to buying a bottle of 1996 Chateau Lynch Bages. Never spent $80 for a bottle of wine before and honestly thought it was crazy. That was my first taste and I’ve been hooked ever since. Also while there bought a set of Nachtmann Bordeaux stems and still have three.

  • @edinalengyel5160

    Another great one, thank you! Many of your contemporaries have worked far harder, IMHO, for the same qualification that the big-name oldie MWs now admit, even a few decades ago, was based on knowledge of French wine, how the British merchants operated, and a 'bit of other stuff'. I don't think they're joking at all when they say they couldn't pass today.
    And finally an MW with an early career on the floor, and exemplifying it needn't be the other/or of restaurant professionals-> Court of Sommeliers and winemakers/wine merchants/the theory-minded-> WSET and Master of Wine....go 'hybrids'! (I find it more embarrassing than amusing when recently anointed Masters of Wine blurt out, every chance they get, how they'd spill wine over everybody if tasked with opening a bottle.)
    Personally am in two minds which way/how far to go - finishing WSET 3 now and starting WSET 4 later this year - but find your opinions very-very helpful.

    I have a question. I am fairly new to the wine world. I am 57 years old, but have only drank wine for about 5 years. During the last 5 years I have done a LOT of reading and watching of documentaries that educate on the history of some varietals and the whole wine making process. I have learned a lot in the last 5 years but still have MUCH more to learn. Here is my question: I have noticed my palate has changed a LOT over the last couple of years and I am not sure that it is a good thing. Wines that I previously loved are now seeming too sweet. For example I used to love California Cab Savs and Merlots, but now many of the CA labels that I previously loved are just too sweet. I feel like I am sliding down a slippery hill to the dark side because I find myself almost exclusively buying French and Italian labels that are more dry. Is this just the natural progression of becoming a wine drinker or is there something else going on with my palate?

    • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
      @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This sounds like the normal progression into wine geekdom... Fortunately, there are great structured and refreshing wines coming out of CA, Australia, and most other parts of the New World today as well.

  • @feelinggrape
    @feelinggrape 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Hey Konstantin, as a master of wine with an academic approach to it (you mentioned studying it): what's your approach to biodynamic viticulture? Imho it's really bogus stuff and the research on it is very thinly available or badly done and almost never compares normal organic viticulture with biodynamic viticulture but always with traditional ways to do this. Which is pretty silly.
    As a chemical engineer with experience in food and pharmaceutical sciences I really dislike the anti-science approach of this, however, many of my favorite wineries switched towards biodynamic farming, so i drink it rather often. I noticed that winestyles became more sleek, less fat over the past years. Also PetNat and natural wines seem to be a big trend, so I see a bigger scope behind it.
    tl,dr: what is your approach to biodynamic viticulture? Thanks and best wishes, very interesting stories!

    • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
      @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you. I think I need to do a video on that in the future! The short version: I also think that looking at it from a scientific angle a lot of of it is BS. There are some elements that seem to work and there is also some evidence that was collected. The wines are often great though and the sleekness is also something I notice.

    • @TheMarkJoergensen
      @TheMarkJoergensen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine I think alot of that can be attributed to the extra care going into the wines. You big commercial winery arent going to go biodynamic because its not that profitable compared to commercial wining(?)

My story of wine loving begun some bottle of wine from shop wich was from spain and it is show a wine like a qualited product because in my coutry with wine all time was a problem all people prefer vodka and 10-20 years ago in shops was almost only some trash wich was very hard to understend like solid product for man for example. Like for what me a unknown wine from peace of shit, alcohol and sugar if I can drink vodka. but with time my life was changed and I try some new solutions and now I guess I can`t leave a wine and change it on something else. But of course I am not always very happy with wine because sometime I drinking too many and sometime quality of wine from shop is very poor, but I anyway buying some wines from shop and drinking many of them even if I am already have my own wine wich I don`t drink often.

      I even can remind name of wine from spain wich was for me like a start it was manon tempranillo. of couse it is not premium wine for sure but for that time and that price it was something really new for me. Also in that time I drunk some wines from chile g7 produser entery level I guess but quality was bit floaty.

      The answer would be a video in itself ... This is from my about section:
      Konstantin is the youngest German ever to pass the Master of Wine qualification. In 2019 he won the WSET & IWSC Future 50 award as he was named one of the leaders of the future wine, spirits, and sake industries.
      He runs his import and retail business meinelese.de, is the wine ambassador for one of Germany's biggest and most dynamic wine retailers BELViNi.DE, runs the award-winning wine program of the Brenners Park-Hotel in Baden-Baden, and works as the European Ambassador for the California Wine Institute.
