I've played piano for 10 years from 4-14. I stopped completely because I was busy with school and getting into a good college - then I was caught up in my career. Now I'm 29 and I really would love to get back to playing piano. These tips are super helpful. Thank you!
I used to play piano and I stoped playing it for awhile because I was on vacation and I couldn’t bring my piano to play so after vacation,I stoped going to piano lessons.and now I kinda regret it because now I feel like the piano is a beautiful instrument. But I have have a piano so I can start playing again!😁
As a kid, I never liked the lessons, I was so nervous. I just wanted to play and play and play. Now I am 48, and I wish I could start again. I have a keyboard, but I need some help - love music!!!
Thank you so much. I took lessons for 10 years and then played for years and stopped. then started. then stopped. then started again. I used to rock "Theme From Apartment". Forget playing that now but I found my "baby books" from John Thompson and it is coming back to me.
Good tips, this is what I pretty much did. I also bought a book called I Used to Play Piano by E.L. Lancaster and Victoria McArthur which gave you little tests to see where best to start from in their book, which was in units and you progressed through. Was a great help in focussing a pathway for me. I am now working through the adult Faber books which give me technique theory and chord understanding I was never taught. I was just taught to play pieces (no grade exams) and I didn't start till age 18. Am now 66. Good luck everyone and thanks to Alison for all her helpful videos.
i stopped playing about 6 years ago, i'd say? i played from ages 6 to 16 but then i stopped going to classes bc school took over my life. i now find myself listening to music and wishing i could play as easily as i once did, so that's why i am here now. thank you for the tips, i'll be sure to use them!
That's what is happening to me, I played piano from 9 to 17, then I got into Med school and it has been 4 years where I just play river flows in you and moonlight. I miss my old skills :(
T CH Familiar story! I played piano from 4 to 16 years old and I stopped when I started college courses and I’m 18 now and I’ve regained my appreciation for the skill.

These are great tips. I started playing at 10 years old and played through college. I was a piano performance minor. After college, I got busy with life. It has been about a decade since I last played, and I'd love to be able to play like I used to.
I used to play piano but my parents kept forcing me to learn songs and other things and I gradually lost interest in piano I still do but my parents are forcing me to play again so here we go again...
My mom always made me play river flows in you over and over just because she liked it, back when I was 11-12, I got sick of piano and started to hate it. Eventually I stopped playing and my mother said that getting bored of a song was not an excuse because real piano players never get bored of a song (idk where she saw that). Now, after 3 years, I’m coming back to piano, to play songs I LIKE and I actually enjoy a lot playing. The only sad thing is that there are lots of songs of videos games that I want to play but are too hard.
Hi Allison, thank you for the tips- it has been about 40yrs since I played - wasn't particularly good but used to enjoy it, life got in the way - now retired I have time to play, although the back aches slightly didn't used to years ago, good advice though about scales.......will endeavour to do them.Love your channels and thoroughly enjoyed learning Pachebel's Canon and Tocata and Fugue, thanks again! From Mrs Patricia Smith.....Northumberland.
I’m so grateful for this video. I got up to grade 5 as a child/teenager, but haven’t played for 30 years and have been putting off starting again for fear of not being able to remember how to play as I did. I stupidly sold my beautiful piano years ago but have finally decided to buy a keyboard and am going to start again, following the tips you’ve given here. I only wish I’d kept my music books. God knows whether any of it will come back to me (I hope it does) but either way, I’m looking forward to getting back into something I loved when I was younger. Wish me luck 😬
Allison, I'm 75 yrs old and haven't played the piano in 50 + years. I can still remember being alone with my piano and feeling great joy. I want to play, again. I love the fact that I can learn with your online courses. An teacher sitting next to me would make me tense. I read your tips for getting back into playing. I no longer have any of my music books or sheet music and I don't remember the scales. Where do I start with your program? My piano will arrive next month. I'm very excited.
If you can already play, then my course wont be for you as it teaches people to play from scratch. I dont know what you can or cant do so I cant really be specific im afraid. All i can do is mimic what I said in the video really.
Best of luck. I'm 72 and just opened my piano and I am relearning. I may never get to where I was but I am enjoying every little piece without making clinkers....
just started again after 5 years. certain pieces i know by heart, but i started doing hanon again and it's shocking to see how i lost the eveness of my playing. also looked at scales again. really sad i dont have some anymore but ty for the tips!
ive been forced to play the piano from the age 6 to 12; went to music school. the set music program with certain forms required, pieces from certain eras made it quite frustrating for a literal child to learn, i grew hatred for tbh most of classical music. now i kinda wish i still knew how to play, but its just so embarrassing to not know how to play anymore… this video is a lot of help!
I played all through high school in keyboard class and learned around 10 songs by memory then. 1988. Played after graduating for almost 5 more years and easy to learn. Now roll the clock to today when I havent touched a piano since at least 1999 and when I sit at the keys can not for the life of me remember anything I used to play by memory at all. Very frustrating but want to get back into playing again.
I love the piano! I love the violin! After a long hiatus due to medical issues, I’m ready to continue to learn, and advance. Thank you for your advice.
Hey I stopped playing for a few years but for getting better at reading notes I made flash cards of all the chords and notes (I bought a cheap stack from a music store actually 😂) and practicing for the same time each day really helps 🙃
The top stave or treble clef is for humans. The bottom stave, bass clef is for animals. That is to say, you can use for the top Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge for the lines at the top. Great Big Dogs Fight Angrily, and All Cows Eat Grass for the bass lines and spaces. Also KNOW WHICH KEY YOU'RE IN lol
thank you so much for these helpful tips! I havent played in a year and I tried during that year to get myself back on it but I just didnt know how to start I got frustrated and I lost a lot of my skills and my fingers became hard on the keys.. Now that I saw your video I know exactly what to focus on and how to build myself up again.
Thank you for making this video, I've stopped for almost 4 years and now I just play river flows in you and moonlight sonata because 4 years ago I got into Med school and I've to move to a different city without my piano :(
Good points. I have taught piano for some 50 years and during that time of course had little time to practice. Now I’m retired and want to play again! It’s so hard to get back into it and the level I was at during my university days… I was up there at Licentiate level but that’s not the case now. The points you mentioned make lots of sense.
When I was 13 years old, my late cousin, who was my age, had taught me how to play the piano using basic piano skills. And even though she’d played very little piano whereas her mother used to play very well by ear, I had later begun enjoying it by picking up what I’d already learned. When I was 16, my dad and I used to take piano lessons at an old music school until he all of a sudden discontinued our piano lessons which eventually caused me to lose my confidence. And even when I tried to pick up where I left off playing the piano in College and for Sunday school, somehow, I ended up losing interest all together by wasting time fumbling to find the right notes. Technically, I didn’t start playing the piano again until two years ago (2020) when I saw my pastor played the piano and directed the choir for the ACTUAL first time! And since then and currently now, I was determined to start playing the piano again by trying to regain my confidence and playing everyday consistently. Even though it’s going to take some time to brush up on my skills with confidence and consistency, I have a piano teacher who is very patient with me. And now, because I had seen my pastor played the piano proficiently since he started playing way before I did, I’m getting better and better at it. It’s just the matter of my not rushing myself to get better because it takes time to rebuild my ability to play again nonstop.
Thank you for the tips. I can’t remember the last time I had a lesson. I was homeschooled and before college and work I naturally had a lot of time to play and practice. Then came full time work. Schedules change and now at least I have a 3 day weekend. So definitely will be trying these tips come Friday. Thank you for posting this video. Stay safe out there!
i starting playing piano when i was 9 and lost interest around grade 3 because i found it really boring as everything i was forced to play was really classical and all i wanted to play were my favourite songs. i’m 15 now and i really want to get back into piano and just learn songs i like and not do grades, i just struggle with motivation esp with my exams
I needed this video, thank you so much. I just got my fingers tattoo'ed and they are sore like after a long week of practice. Made me really want to start again. I'm gonna start with Grande Valse Brillante and Nocturne in C# Minor (post.) both Chopin. I had those performance ready before I quit.
Hi Allison, thanks for the tips, it's been a long time since I last played the organ and I'm thinking on getting your books to start over with the piano
This video is really really useful. P.S. Not personally for me (as I practice Piano Religiously now), but I know many people who will benefit from this, an I will share this video with them (mainly my sister).
I gave my piano teacher hell for being so strict and pushing me so hard and now as an adult, im thinking about calling her up and paying her double just to berate me again 😂 she was tough with me, but my God did she know what she was talking about. She always saw talent in me and was keen for me to be reaching my full potential. Youre right about the muscle memory. My hands know all of my scales but my brain does not 😂
I haven't played in over 16 years and i remember most of the notes but my reading speed is faster than my playing speed so i tend to play slowly and cautiously
It would be, but it would cost too much for what it is and would add that back onto the value of the house - especially if we are going to be here another 1-2 years whilst we wait for house prices to come down. I had a quote for £18-20k for a small 3x3 single story extension on the side of the house.
Tip 1: "rind music, you played when you left off" - I've been playing for 7 years as a professional, last piece that I didn't finish is so hard, that after 3 years of break I can't even read the notes properly
I think you misread my inquiry. I don't play. I haven't played in 50 years. So, I think I have to relearn all of it. Please ask Allison which of her programs she suggests?
Then Im confused? You say you dont play at all, then say you have not played in 50 years? I have no idea what you can or cant do so I dont know what level you are at or what to suggest without knowing any information. Again, I can only suggest what I said in this video. If you have never played the piano, then you will need to start from the begining.
