She was definitely the right person for this cover. I can't be sure it's not just that my poor audio equipment that can't take how loud I want to listen to this at, but she's got that kind of raspiness in her vocals that just hits it perfect.
Check out all her other PMJ performances and look up Joey Cook....she was on American Idol and has brilliant music of her own. Awesome woman. Ive had this song on repeat since finding PMJ last week. The "virus" quarantine and shut down allowed me to find this amazing channel...so many awesome performances!
Her voice is indeed captivating, but it's the whole package. She is so adorable and quirky. And singing that song, barefoot in that dress? Fuggitaboutit.
To all of you in the comments criticizing the vibe of the video and the movements of the singer..... Have you ever seen a Cage the Elephant performance? Cause you're missing out
I saw them in concert (cage the elephant, not pmjb) and he walked to the grass section (it was an outside amphitheater) and he said "bring me to the beer!" And people carried him to the beer stand, and everyone in the back flipped!! It was so fun!
Did you ever watch The Moderns? There is a brief second or two when in a Jazz Club in Paris the movie switches from black and white to color, and from a jazz trio to a punk band. Then it goes back to the 1930s. You almost think you imagined it.
@@wuh-huw9950 I think you're confusing the jazz age with the big band era which stemmed from the jazz age which ended in 1929, jazz has still been around just not as hugely as it was post WW1 up til 1929, hope this helps clear things up a bit💜
I guess you could say this cover was Legendary. Scott looked Handsome as always. Also, the singer sounds like an Angel. I'm so glad I had the Opportunity to see this.
My new favorite song. Absolutely perfect vocals, and great music behind. Postmodern Jukebox is great, as are the speakeasy three, the swing ninjas, the speakeasy swing band and so many more electro-swing bands. Plus, Joey Cook "emotes" perfectly, I like the attitude she projects.
Of course she nails the song. Everyone has already said that, but the thing that put this over the top for was her stage presence. If you've ever watched CTE perform this song, she absolutely nails the feel that Matt Schultz has while still making it seem appropriate for the "era". Even her look.
I love your channel as well as the concept of playing modern songs in a vintage style. HOWEVER, I CHALLENGE YOU GUYS TO DO THE OPPOSITE: Perform a '2017 version' of a 40's hit song.
Matt Apparently you're living under a rock (where they still play 'What A Wonderful World' or 'Can't Help Falling In Love'...), Cause if you turn on a radio one of these days you'll hear the kind of shit they call music in modern times... I'm pretty sure what Matthew meant was that most of the songs that were popular in the 1940's were covers of older songs.
WOW... A. Writing 'an' wasn't wrong since I was using 'lol' as a noun (El-Oh-El). B. I'm sorry if I offended you. I didn't mean to talk down... C. The term 'Pop Music' can refer to one of two genres. It either means popular music in general, or a specific style of music that was popular in the 50's and 60's. D. Popular music has most certainly changed beyond recognition. (If you think otherwise, reread my previous comment.) E. Pop Music (which in the 50's and 60's was also 'Popular Music'), did not change, however, it is no longer popular and is completely irrelevant. F. Never have I mentioned the word 'pop'... All I said was that the 'hits' of the 40's are radically different than those of the 2010's And also, all the incoherent rambling (about copyright/royalties/licensing) is completely irrelevant to this conversation...
This idea makes no sense. What makes PMJ great is their ability to take a simple pop song and make it musically complex. It's not a challenge to dumb down music.
First hearing this song from Borderlands and then hearing Joey Cook! I just stop and listen to this over and over and over. Joey Cook and PMJ .....YES!
Joey cook is fantastic and makes this song hers. I can not imagine another one singing this song. After seeing this video about twenty times I notice the guy with the clarinet, Joey cook catches my attention every time, amazing voice, and the way she moves... simply perfect.
Zane Peavy OMG Every Planet We Reach Is Dead would be PERFECT for this channel. The paino solo at the end would be more at the frog of the mix. Oh please please please let them do that one! Also El manana
FANTASTIC PERFORMACE ALL AROUND!!!! I've always heard the expression "No rest for the wicked". This song is actually contemporary, but it sounds like it was written in the 1920's. Joey Cook really knows how to deliver it as if Clara Bow, the 1920's "It Girl", was singing it. The band is also incredible.
It's a joke. Usually, PMJ videos have a background character doing something fun. Like check out their cover of nsync's bye bye bye and try to focus on anything other than the tambourine guy for more than a few seconds. It's a running gag. And it's funny as all heck.
This is just a great, fun, wonderful performance. Joey, you are just perfection here. This is also a great example of how Scott's choice of arrangements often manages to unlock the true essence of a song, and let the brilliance of the writing shine. This is why we love PMJ!
This arrangement makes it seem like this is the original version, copied from an obscure Louis Armstrong recording. The PMJ covers are always good, but once in a while they far surpass the originals.

For sure.
Amen to that!
And... I'm subbing, you sold me

the song works perfectly in this style woah

This is amazing. Can you just imagine a time traveler opening a swing jazz club with modern music?
Like that movie they made where the Beatles never existed and a dude takes on showing what the world missed in his eyes? That would be awesome.
They did something like that in Bioshock Infinite
