    The Gumtree story is already impressive enough. But when you watch it, try to look for all the little things that make it seem real. The tiny mentions of facts that never come up again, referencing the text when Randy gets to the house, etc. Hell, he even makes assumptions about a person he’s made up to the audience, going off on a completely different joke in the process. The misdirection in this story plays off the audience itself, and it’s utterly mind blowing.

    • @airplanes_aren.t_real
      @airplanes_aren.t_real 2 ปีที่แล้ว +131

      I think I understand why it feels so unsatisfying to know that wasn't real
      It's because it felt real
      It's not your usual made up fiction where no matter what happens we will always have the safety net of "no matter how real this may feel it isn't" (something a lot of horror writers have to work hard just so the audience doesn't realize) but in this case we jumped blindly into the story receiving flashes of light that darkened as fast as they appeared(the twists) only to be followed by even more light and a lingering feeling of brightness during the dark moments making so we craved some sort of end or a floor to hit but afterwards we learn that we were in the net all along, no matter how big those twists and turns were they didn't happen
      The point of fiction is to feel real while the point that stories based on something that really happened is to not feel fictional but this hits an interesting place where it feels so real we didn't realize it was made up, I think that we like stories like this because they sound so crazy that they couldn't possibly happen but with enough details and a good enough presentation we might start to question that belief to the point where we throw the entire question out the window because it sounds dumb seeing the amount of small notes and bits that make it seem like a retelling of randy's life, and it takes us out of our usual repetitive routine into a small tale we would gush about to our friends for months whenever we had the chance

How the show went flawlessly from an-hour-and-then-some of laughing to giving the audience something to really think about and just sending us off with an implication of how performing in the show has changed Randy? That was an emotional roller coaster of the best kind. Thanks so much for this experience!

      I guess it's like a drawing. If most of the elements are spot on, one missing is just filled in by the mind. His timing both kinetically and vocally are exaggerated perfection.
      My favorite moment is in The Book of Randicus, where they show little short films at several points in between his standup. At one point, Randy is talking on a phone, telling his mum "No, I'm good, I'm good, just a little tired." Then when he hangs up he gets frustrated getting the handset to stay on hook, then just collapses against the phone with a sigh. IRL I am constantly on the road for work, and I said to myself, "Man, I know that feeling. Soul-weary from the road." Then I remembered it was a puppet. Just amazing Heath could make me resonate like that with a bits of foam, plastic, and felt.
      Hadn't had a puppet evoke such a strong emotion since I was a kid watching Jim Henson doing "Time in a Bottle" on the Muppet Show.

    This is and I think always will be my favorite Randy show. It was the first one I ever saw and still the funniest one for me. The fluidity and naturalness of the puppeteering is incredible and the way Randy's body language and voice make it seem like he has different facial expressions when he doesn't is unreal. The breathalyzer scene where he switches between a cop and a "drunk" driver is one of the best examples of it. It takes talent to be a good comedian, but being a good comedian AND a good puppeteer at the same time? Insane!

    5:45 It really is an amazing feeling. Back in college the security officers would check me often, namely since I drank this fancy imported soda that came in glass bottles. Every time they were left dumbstruck that I was sober despite stumbling about, admittedly due to nerve damage and dehydration. Senior year a new guy, really gungho and excited to be there type asks me aside after seeing me nearly collapse, bottles haphazardly stuffed into my coats pockets, labels removed, etc. He kept me there for so long because he thought his breathalyzer had broken and had requested another security officer to come on by. The guy draws close, sees me in the lamp light and goes “Oh God damn it, it’s just Sullivan again. Just let him go, he’s not drunk, just an idiot.”

    I think my favorite part about Randy's comedy is how seamlessly it blends the idea of "its a puppet" and "regular stand up comedian bit". He'll go along and describe some situation or do a bit that you'd expect from typical stand up comedians (and they'll be funny already) but then he reminds you of the fact that "its a puppet". He's worked so well in bouncing between the two and it flows so perfectly

    Really love how it swaps between Ted talk and comedy special. He still seems a bit afraid to talk about extremely deep things and I think that’s because he’s performing as a comedian and is afraid of disappointing his audience, but I really enjoyed the breaks into his deeper ideas. That book is something I’d want to get my hands on, just to see more of how he expresses his ideas.
